Bungie's marketing department: the real enemy

After watching Byf's reaction to the Witness' origin cutscene and Cross' microtransaction video I have a takeaway that I don't think gets discussed enough. When something goes wrong with D2 we all tend to dog pile on "developers". I think of writers, coders, testers, the guys that build the nuts and bolts of the game, and how it works. The guys that drive the narrative and decide how it should unfold. These are people that play the game, engage with the community, and really are a part of our community. I don't think those people, the ones that build the game, are really driving the bus anymore. I can't wrap my head around how the narrative of Lightfall could be allowed to launch as it was when the Witch Queen was so good. I think the bean counters, the accountants, the marketing division, decided that we needed to be short changed in Lightfall so they could try to sink the hook in on season of the deep. That's why there was so much info forthcoming about season of the deep at the launch of lightfall. Not to mention the coinciding price hike and the fact that you need 15 dollars worth of silver for a 12 dollar season. Telling us they had more info about the Witness, the Veil, new strand aspects, Titan returning... I find it hard to believe that this was how the programmers wanted to deliver Lightfall. Decisions are being made by suits, beyond the control of the people at Bungie that love this game and want to put out something amazing. They're being held back, forced to divide up and spread out content to the detriment of the game and the community at large. These corporate extortionists are now the ones deciding how much goes into a season, a dungeon, a DLC, and THAT is why our content feels so throttled. It's a terrible way to make a game. Used to be they built a game and marketing would sell it. Now marketing is deciding what kind of game we're supposed to have before its even released, and the pay-to-win line is starting to show in the rear view mirror.

  •
. These are people that play the game
No joke, have you ever seen any of them play? Go look up any live stream of them playing and I dare you to come back to this post and try to pass that off. They already admitted to not play-testing their content, and knowing this game has more issues than any game out to date, it would be wise to do your research. As far as the rest goes, it's all due to the higher-ups.

    • Marketing specifically are the PR/advertising folks. What you’re looking for are the suits. The decision makers. The guy that use stupid -blam!- buzzwords and end up spewing sentences full of nonsense while trying to pick your pocket. Money guys. They ruin everything.

All of the God-awful decision makers need to ensure Destiny is at maximum monetary efficiency, and they value that above player experience unfortunately. And when they no longer have devoted enough resources to have both, well, one certainly takes precedence.

    • People fail to mention that if you are paying 15 dollars for enough silver to buy a 12 dollar season, then the last season is completely free. It's 12 dollars a season.

    • People only talk about developers because most are kids living home. Mommy and daddy bought their playstation and xboxs. They don’t know how the corporate world works and so they worship Bungie. Corporations have ruined our culture, environment, financial markets repeatedly and music. Bungie is just the latest company to virtue signal social issues because that’s what research and demographics tell them they should be doing. They are the new Blizzard and Activision. Bungie isn’t the unicorn everyone wished they were. They’re greedy liars like all the rest.

Also I feel the same about marketing and advertising as The Late Great Mr Hicks, but this is just -blam!- stupid.

    • Yes. The thing about communism is the ignorant ppl that praise it always assume they'll be part of the ruling bureaucracy and not the majority of "unpaid laborers". And this is what you get. Garbage products with higher prices and nobody is happy.

      • Wall of text. Bungie decided to span the original single DLC scheduled post WQ over two years. For most likely buying more time for Marathon which probably they are behind schedule after 10 years of development. Thinning out content inevitably. This is the result.
These are people that play the game, engage with the community
I don't think the devs do either very often, it's not necessary to enable certain group of people so it feels justified to -blam!- on bungie, if the devs feel comfortable getting overpaid remote working in their pajamas while making dcv into reality there's no reason to believe they will be better decision makers

      • BHQs 3 Top Ringbearers 1. The Legal Ring - the level of control and containment is Legendary. 2. The Hype Ring - the power of persuasion and froth generation is beyond compare. 3. The misManagement Ring - the all-powerful ring that rules them all. Special mention must be afforded to… 4. The Corporate Investment Ring - whose powers are beyond epic! As for Guardians (Customers) - <cue crickets > Since D1Y1, ‘twas ever thus. SMH 🙄 Cheers! 🫡
