Things were better with Activision.

Games/expansions with Activision: D1 Vanilla The Taken King Rise of Iron D2 Vanilla Forsaken Expansions without Activision: Beyond Light Shadowkeep Witch Queen Lightfall I’m not a genius, but its pretty damn obvious why Bungie is 1 for 4 out of their independent expansions.
Edit: I’m only talking big expansions/releases, so no Curse of Osiris or Warmind. But for the record, if we did include those, we would have to include Crota’s End and House of Wolves. Which by D2’s standards were solid expansions and would easily cancel out Osiris + Warmind in the breakdown.

I don’t want to be that guy, but if you didn’t play Destiny 1 then you can’t exactly comment on what it was like to experience it as a live service — not going back to try it after D2 came out. Not saying it makes your opinion any less meaningful, but it does skew things a bit.
• Shadowkeep and Beyond Light weren't even that bad. Lightfall however is truly as bad as everyone says it is, and if we're all being honest with each other, With Queen wasn't that great.

    • Im gonna tell you right now if activision was still in charge then most development would’ve gone to the eververse store. Activision would probably even remove bright dust so players would have to actually purchase silver to get stuff.

      • D1 vanilla had an infamously shitty launch. 6 month taken king content drought. D2 vanilla launch was bad too. curious you leave out CoO and dark below. Also you know activision is a pretty -blam!- company right? if bungie had stuck with activision there'd be even more monetization or worse the game would've been shelved entirely. also 100% activision would've pushed for d3 wich would've gotten rid of all aquired loot again

Ignoring the nostalgia goggles, it was about the same with activation.
D1 Vanilla
You think Beyond Light had a bad campaign? Wait for Vanilla D1 where nothing will be explained as you defend your ghost for 80% of the missions. While it was a new experience it had nothing to offer the player base outside of Vault of glass. 6/10 experience at best and started the whole "destiny is a dead game" meme. Oh yeah. You also have to unlock every perk on your every gun before they become useful. Not to mention that the planetary material grind was a needed filler grind to upgrade armor and weapons too for game play we've had. Edit: Let's not forget about getting upgrade materials instead of armor/weapon from raids.
The Taken King
Introduced an actual story line Amazing expansion. New enemy faction. New sub classes. Story was worth playing, even tho it had a fair amount of filler missions. Great raid. First public even style hoard mode with the Court of Oryx. You can infuse gear now! However all the perks had to be leveled up to be usable and the planetary material grind was awful, especially for the exotic missions. Unlike vanilla, you had no expansions to this and after a few months there was nothing left to do. *Eververse enters the chat.
Rise of Iron
A regression from the story telling in Taken King revolving around with a sold number of filler missions. New enemy class which....punished you for getting head shots? Lame. Compared to King's Fall the new raid was less creative, but it was a quicker and more easy raid to do when board. Gave us Court of Oryx 2.0. You can now use motes of light to skip/cut down the weapon perk grind. Planetary material farm sill a thing tho.
D2 Vanilla
Somehow was worse than Vanilla D1. No random rolls. An okay story with filler missions. No character or gear transfer starting the pattern of bringing back gear that they took away from us. Boring raid. Removed all the QOL and gameplay improvements from TK and ROI for no reason and even ruing subclass customization from D1. It was the closest Bungie every got to having to shut down the game for good.
Forsaken
A paint by the numbers revenge story where you check off a list of ads one by one that also has time for the same filler missions since D1 Vanilla like "collect 100 of this and that from the planet," "do this patrol and do this public event 5 times" and "give the spider a handy." ANd the best part of the campaign was spoiled in its trailer. However this expansion brought back random roll loot, added one of the better raids, added gambit, added seasons giving more life to the game post launch, The dreaming city weekly cycle was dope, Introduced the first dungeon, brought back the Court of Oryx for the third time. This expansion overall put D2 on the same level that D1 was by the end of its life. Which is not something that should be praised. The Activison era was not much better than right now. While there were some high moments, the Destiny franchise also experienced its lowest moments with them at the helm. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

          • Meh rise of iron was good but tiny, vanilla d2 literally laid in its death bed. Of course a larger pool of devs makes for more or more interesting content. The games also evolved a lot more without them in ways I’d argue makes it more interesting. The amount of QoL updates is insane too, you don’t realize how much we’ve gotten until you watch vanilla gameplay for a while

It's funny reading through the replies on this post. When it comes to quality content that matters a hell of a lot more than the amount. The OP is 100% correct about it being better when Activision was around, and since activation left the quality, the amount, the shop, the grind, the RNG, etc... Just about everything got worse and LF is one of the worst expansions/seasons that has been released. The amount of content was never a problem with either game. A lot of you guys are the actual problem wanting to burn through everything and have everything as you do today, yesterday only playing this game. It's part of the reason D2 is so poorly designed. It's actually in a worse state than D1 was when it comes to its structure, designing content that has incentives and keeping players engaged in the content they design. There is a lot more monetization and a lot more paywalls with the over-pricing content that has offered nothing in any sort of value. Then there is the times gatteing cxontent becase this business has nothing to offer because they are using your money to fund the other games instead of this one 😂🤦‍♂️ The content being pushed out is Barebone, dead brain content. Any business can push out the amount of lazy work this business has done, but the truth is, not all businesses are as lazy as this one actually is. What's messed up is knowing this is a 9-year-old franchise and they are still pushing out a lot of the same lazy development since 2014 and some of you think pushing out more barebone dead brain content "makes a game better" That's just stupid...

                  • Also with Activision: content droughts for more than 3/4 of the year, every year You conveniently left out 2 of the most poorly received DLCs and also tried to sneak vanilla d2 in there as if everyone loved it

                    • D1 vanilla was universally hated by almost everyone for a lack of content, bad story, and a weak endgame with a bad grind. TTK was great but came with a massive content drought which meant for most players after three months they were out of things to do and reasons to play, the cobbled together April update did little to refresh the game and keep it interesting until RoI. RoI was a good time too, less content than TTK but otherwise nothing to really write home about, had more content throughout the year to keep it somewhat interesting. D2 vanilla was awful, arguably worse than D1 vanilla, almost killed the game and was the worst point the game has ever been in. Slow movement, slow abilities, no endgame, no loot to chase, nothing good. Forsaken was good, the content throughout the year was good for the most part, season of the drifter was definitely mid. Shadowkeep was also pretty good, narrative was good, seasons were alright, the sandbox wasn't in a fantastic place. Beyond light was also very good, new subclass, good sandbox, good raid, good endgame. And witch queen was hands down one of the best stories we've ever gotten paired with a great raid, great sandbox, great endgame. Lightfall is currently the best state the game has ever been in, yes the story sucked but the game itself has absolutely never been better. Once you take the rose tinted glasses off and quit equating the games quality to how much nostalgia you feel for it, you start to actually see that the quality has really only gone up.

                        • Crota’s End, House Of Wolves, Curse of Osiris, Warmind are all better than Shadowkeep. So yeah they should be included. Technically Red War - Forsaken is “Destiny 2” Destiny 3 is Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, Witchqueen. Destiny 4 is Lightfall, Final Shape.

                          • Right. Let's ignore the fact that the last couple Call of Duties have been the worst in their franchises history. Or how Overwatch 2 said they were building an entire PvE side to the second game and then said "eh, sorry, we couldn't do it." Let's be real. You'd complain no matter what.

                              • Vanilla D1 was literally saved by VoG. Taken king had a 4 month content drought. Rise of iron had a 6 month content drought. Vanilla D2 was the turd of all turds... Forsaken was the best of all expansions, and Activision claimed it was a failure ! The 4 expansions listed after the divorce from Activision, are characterized by many problems, the separation from Activision being the first. No company can let go of assets without at least some drawbacks and issues. The pandemic had a very negative impact on development of everything that came after that. Many think, ok they just had to work from home, but all that time negatively influenced 2 years of development, that's not easy to overcome for any company, in fact many are still struggling to get back to where they were in 2019. Bungie has a hell of a lot of of things to blame for, listening too much to top tier streamers being one of their largest mistakes. Plus many others that they are directly responsible for, but separating from Activision was definitely not one of them.
