1. How long have you been playing this game?
2. How long was your last break from playing Destiny 2
3. When was that break taken, ex/ last year, 2021, etc.
I recently came back after taking a break that lasted over a year. Here on the forums I see the same posts from people basically obsessed with this game but saying they're sick of it and are going to leave soon or uninstall the game soon.
It is clear to me this game is addictive, the reason I'm posting the above questions is to possibly shed some light on how long people play this game, on average, before putting it down for more than 3 months.
Thanks in advance to those who post responses.

Started during the taken king had like 3500 hrs in d1 then played up until just after shadow keep. And only recently came back for lightfall since someone else bought lightfall and witchqueen for me.

Since 2014 12 months 5/22-05/23

played a bit I think some where early in d1, then lost the game for a bit and found it and played it till d2 came out and then played till season of arrival, then I took a long break from season of arrival to I think the end of season of the hunt

Edited by policzanin539: 6/13/2023 1:28:00 PMPlayed since D1 beta, my longest break started before Lightfail and continues. Unfortunately, with such a palette of games like Diablo 4, Zelda or MH Sunbreak there is no room for travesty and the break will continue until further notice. D4 is deep and rewarding. What Destiny used to be. Is Diablo Destiny killer? So far it is for me.
1. How long have you been playing this game?
Since D1 Iron Lords Expansion.
2. How long was your last break from playing Destiny 2
I'm currently on break. I haven't played for... 2 weeks? Give or take.
3. When was that break taken, ex/ last year, 2021, etc.
Last time I took a break was mid Beyond Light and then I come back TWQ Season 2, If I remember correctly.

Have played since D1 release. Have always taken periodic breaks, more consciously since Shadowkeep. Have committed a lot of time but will only play for as long as it feels enjoyable, when the game starts to feel tedious I will play something else. Having frequent breaks and not being as fully invested in Destiny has improved my relationship to the game. Destiny is inherently a frustrating game, the longer you play it the more apparent it’s flaws and mismanagement becomes.

I've been playing since D1 HoW, at least officially. Last break I took was last month actually, I typically stop playing the last month of the season since I've normally done everything there is to do. Maybe I'll hop back on once or twice to grab a shader or something that's for sale.

Edited by Skullshot: 6/13/2023 3:14:07 AMTaking one right now. Became interested in board repair for console controllers since I’m sick of hearing console friends -blam!- about drift lol. That and catching up/ prepping for my final year of college. Also got it in my head digitizing decades of media my family has amassed into a jellyfish server would be a cost effective way to cancel streaming subscriptions…. 3 weeks in and I’m not even a quarter of the way threw it all Feels pretty nice taking a break after the day one dungeon and before the next raid race. My second or third year taking a break around this time Been playing since d1’s beta and offered a reach around to get in the alpha… it did not work

Since the alpha.. Lightfall was meant to relight everything...it didn't last long The breaks have got closer and closer together Currently on another one right now Stopped playing again 5/6 weeks befor deep. Bought the LF ultimate edition , can't be assed , too many lies from bungo They've now pulled out the panic card and will be returning cayde in some form...might play again for that..just don't know any more I'm sure some people are enjoying it ..good for them Still grateful for the many years of D1, and a fair few in D2, lots of good times have been had As of late ...the fun hasn't lasted long sadly

Haven't taken a big break since other than few week breaks when I go vist family members across the country. Main reason I stay on destiny is because all my friends play it and we sometimes play other games but it's mostly destiny.

Not long enough

It is clear to me this game is addictive
I'd push back on this. People can become addicted to anything, but that doesn't make everything addictive. Been here since 2014. Didn't play for like nine months last year.

played since season of opulence to season 9 but then took a break till the season after season of the arrivals (forgot the name), then played till caitl was introduced, then took like a 8 or 10 month break till guardian games

I’ve been playing since D1’s beta. I’ve never taken a break. Or at least not in the way you seem to mean. I’ve never skipped a dlc or a season. For me Destiny is a weekday game meaning I play through the content on weekdays. I do raids sometimes on Saturdays but dungeons, nightfalls, and seasonal story is all done during the week. Then I play other games on the weekend. It makes for a good balance allowing me to keep up with destiny while still playing through new single players games…or Mass Effect for the 15th time. There is an issue with the game where people act like it is the only game they can play and that they shouldn’t try to make space for other experiences as well.

1 ReplyAssuming at least 6 weeks is what qualifies for a break, I only took 1 which was during Y1 (soon after CoO launch until forsaken launch).
-
I play, probably more than I want because of sunk cost fallacy because I preordered (i regret playing last season which was awful, and the Neptune raid was hot garbage with 0 replay value… this season is ok…ish). Removing the power grind without removing the artifact grind still costs the same time suck to do endgame and time gates old activities When games come out that I like or rl gets in the way I take breaks sometimes a couple months; requiem sequel 2 month break. Resident evil remake month long break. When assassins creed comes out in October probably won’t touch destiny till final shape or maybe will buy final shape on sale after it comes out and or gets review bombed into the bargain basement I’ve given up on destiny ever getting substantially better. It’s old and not a priority so it can’t. Even with the good qol changes like the loadouts…. Eh division had them 3-4 years ago, far better optimized with no paywall. Same as the transmog The game also has run very very poorly even on my hardwired ps5 since 30th anniversary came out and it gets worse and more unstable every season. Half bungie crap servers half being in lobbies with people on ps4 and dinosaur pc who should have been forced off the system a long time ago. I’ve made peace with it. The game is 70 percent crap and will remain that way; if you expect more you are fooling yourself

I honestly don’t know how some players spend so much time on this game but each to their own. I was off it for about a year then one of my mates started playing so started again. I play till I’m bored of it then play something else. I only enjoy the social side ie raids and dungeons when I have a regular group to jump in with.
-
I wouldn't say I take breaks. I do throttle my time in the game though. If there is new content that is interesting, I play quite a bit. But for a long time now Destiny 2 has been something I check in on for about an hour a week ( to further the story, etc.) and then I'm out again. However, from Bungie's point of view, I might as well be out of the game. You don't grow a game with players who barely play and don't buy anything from the Eververse store.
-
Since d1 launched. I broke from the game back in season of opulence during the forsaken year and returned last year during the end of season of the haunted and honestly the game feels so much worse since coming back, so much lost and taken away, the 3.0 light subclasses feel lesser than what we had.
-
Since beta Slowly reduced gameplay hours since beyond light and stopped playing shortly before duality dropped, came back to play the dungeon and haven’t been back since really. Don’t like the direction the game went in, didn’t like the seasonal model from the very beginning. I prefer substantial content and storytelling with droughts ( play another game lol) then come back with a hefty DLC - this is the best way for a player however bungie wants you on daily and constructed their game to be played and benefitted from that. Overall I am disappointed with where it’s at now but also very grateful for the good content over the years and the people I shared it with.

Edited by OmegaKing: 6/12/2023 2:15:57 PMI’ve been here since the d1 beta and I love this game. Don’t get me wrong though, Bungie has done some stupid -blam!-. I hated the idea of a sequel but I trusted their direction however soon after it released d2 vanilla was garbage so I took a break right after the warmind DLC. Came back at the end of the season of the opulence and haven’t stopped since.

Been playing d2 since it came out but only started d1 near the end. Currently on hiatus from playing very much and have been since about a month before season of the seraph ended due to reasons having nothing really to do with destiny. Easily the least I've played since the game came out. The biggest thing I've noticed is how hard it is to tell anything about the game based on only reading forum posts without playing.

1 ReplySince Shadowkeep. Was here since beta. Shallow DLC and the audacity to ask me for more money each season. For content that belongs in the expansion, which sells at the cost of a full game. No. I've occassionaly visited for free play weekends. Beyond Light was trash. Witch Queen was okay, but not the milestone people make it out to be. I've been playing a lot for about three weeks now. Because of boredom. I'm glad I didn't give Bungie any more money. Flat PvE experience with mindless grind and recycled content. Boring weapons, come up with something new than just yet another conditional stat buff perk! And a lot more. Gun handling still feels good, but there's just not enough to do with it. I would advise anyone to follow my example. Take a break, come back when enough free content has piled up to actually be entertained for a couple weeks. Then leave again. Of course, if you're okay with all the recycling, that's fine. For me, it is not.

I play the game because I like it but had to take a 6 weeks long break due to microstutter issues when BL came out.
