The point of focusing is NOT to unlock new exotics, it’s to get a better of an already unlocked exotic.
Do lost sectors and blitz events to unlock all exotics (and never do them again) then use focusing to get better rolls.
This new system is better than nothing but bungie really should have just brought back glass needles instead.

Ok, that makes more sense. I was mostly disappointed because I hoped this would be a good way for me to finally unlock the handful of exotics I really need, but I guess I'll still just be grinding lost sectors for a while.
