Marathon was originally just another doom clone using the same base engine and assets It wasn't good by any means compared to any of bungies other games
We all know that Destiny is going to end pretty soon here, and it probably won't be replaced
When destiny dies bring back EVERYTHING the old raids planets and even older seasonal locations
I have a strong attachment too this game as I was like 10 or 11 when it came out and I played it with my friends and with my dad
That's my 2 cents–PoisonCloud signing off

4 RepliesFunny how nobody seems to mention the fact marathon will get dedicated server. That is a slap in the face of a community who's been asking for private servers in destiny for 10years. Well done bungie.

1 ReplyClearly you never played the first Marathon game, otherwise you would realize that it was way ahead of its time and was one of the first fps games to have the ability to look up and down for an early shooter game, making it more advanced than Doom or other such games of its time. Marathon was a continuation and an evolution from a previous Bungie game and the first foot in the door for Bungie to grow and make shooter games prior to the masterpieces we got in the Halo series. If you had an inch of that knowledge than I urge you to not judge a game by its cover until its been playtested. Bungie is revising a legend back from the dead, we have FPS games like Destiny and Halo because of all the work Bungie has done with evolving their shooter games and helping start FPS shooters to begin with. For this reason I may buy the new Marathon game and test it out, we won't know whether its good until its been played...

1 ReplyEdited by Sturm with no Drang: 5/26/2023 2:47:59 PMThe issue here stems from what has happened in the past. I have no doubt avid fans of the older Bungie games and the gnarled vets who were still here or even before when B.net used to be Halo-focused will definitely have their eye on it. That said, however, they managed to destroy a lot of goodwill between their playerbase and a fair bit of bad PR to boot. Remember the terrible #Offtopic purge from a few years back? Combine this with some rather disconnected comments like that one regarding “overdelivering” and how Destiny’s overall PvP experience has been such a mess. Who is Marathon targeted towards? It won’t draw in nearly as big of a crowd from the Destiny playerbase and no small number of Bungie vets/fans were more or less pushed away. The overall aesthetics will definitely appeal to a good amount of folks, but the fact that it is a PvP game kinda kills what really sold the old Marathon. Killing swathes of aliens, dealing with rogue Durandal and his shenanigans, teleporting across timelines. Destiny took a good bit of inspiration from Marathon’s drive. The biggest gain to a playerbase they will be able to get is from hardcore fans, so long as they haven’t moved on, and the staple of folks who actually enjoy the competitive online scene. With the surplus of PvP games, most of which seem to look almost clone-like due to their similarities, on the market as is they’ll have no choice but to seriously overdeliver and actually have to make it so that New Marathon stands out and provides an experience that other games don’t while still retaining a nostalgic design reminiscent of the franchise. Otherwise, it won’t last or be as successful as it could possibly be.
Fair point to also make though is how badly they will monetize the -blam!- out of it. Will it be Free to Play or will be purchase required? Will they include a battlepass like most other games do now? Will the mtx be borderline predatory like how Silver purchases are with Destiny 2? Will it be limited to a fair shop system where you can make individual cosmetic purchases or will dive into the hell that is lootbox syndrome?
2 RepliesI wouldn't classify the OG Marathon as a "Doom clone," but it was a pretty rudimentary shooter in the very early days of the FPS genre. It was one of the earliest games with dual wield. It was kind of cool for a bit, but just like today, it was an unbalanced mess. This is could be the game where Bungie learns how much good will they've destroyed. There is no way on Earth I'd play a Bungie created PVP only game. I used to play Unreal Tournament avidly. If Epic brought it back, I'd play it. Bungie has proven over the span of Destiny that they're horrible at PVP, network stability is cheeks, design philosophy is wack, and they're predatory liars. IDC if they promise dedicated servers and all of that. They lie so often that can't trust anything they say, or expect promises to be kept. Destiny is basically done imo. It'll likely not be very good ever again.

Marathon distinguished itself from Doom well. Hardly a clone. That being said, resurrecting it this way feels wrong.

3 RepliesIf Destiny 2 is going down then for me its "good bye Bungie, thanks for the jouney"...

2 RepliesHopefully, anthem was good

Edited by CAMMCAM: 5/25/2023 2:16:49 PMCame here for correction. Marathon = PRE-Anthem. (I’m not reading your post)

If you were 10 when Destiny came out, you were a single cell organism in a -blam!- when Marathon came out. lmao How on Earth is Marathon at all "=" to Anthem???? And Destiny is ending soon? Based on what? The light and dark saga ending???

Edited by Grips: 5/25/2023 3:22:35 PMListen don't gatekeep yourself away from new experiences. Look I'm pretty old hell my account age is probably your age or close to it and Bungie always finds a way to bring me back. Its that polish and level of detail, and lore in their FPS games that is still unmatched to this day. This new project being a Tarkov like is very different, but I know I can bet on Bungie to do something amazing with it. Oh and its based on MARATHON? Bonus points for me!

5 RepliesMarathon looks awesome, I made a post about it but the forum moderator removed my post

2 RepliesEdited by Quiet_Bushi: 5/25/2023 10:36:18 AMIf I got it right it will be a full PvP game, so I won't buy it. After Destiny 2 it seems I'l say goodbye to Bungie.

3 RepliesI wish but its more likely they'll just give it the D1 treatment where they leave it as is for scavengers to pick at while bungie moves on to bigger and better things. (Like Marathon if it does well enough or Matter if Matter is still a thing and wasn't just a code name for Marathon) After all its bungie we're talking about here its either low effort or no effort at all these days unless its more profitable to do it a different way then expect nothing from them.
