Trials Matchmaking is bipolar

Sometime last night I was running into trials with some of my friends. At some point when we had gotten a win we got matched with players in the top 0.2% of pvp players, them being 2.70 K/D players overall. We found this unfair because firstly, we were competent pvp players but not top tier with around a little over 1.1 K/D before we started caring about flawless. How does matchmaking allow players to match with sweats with already more than 100 trials wins this week alone. It’s worth the trouble to make a matchmaking system just a little bit more complex just so players aren’t curb stomped by players who play this game for god knows how long. Video Games are a free time activity, some of us don’t have the liberty to become pvp sweats or the top 10%. Make a separate pool based on k/d or whatever the term is because there’s no improving when the steps forward are miles apart.

  • Games shouldn't cater to bad players. If you're still bad after 7 years, that's on you. Look at From Software, all of their titles don't have a difficulty slider. If you can't beat a boss; shucks man 🤷

Bungie has done a lot to benefit casual PVP players. They.. 1) Increased rewards just for playing, regardless of whether you go Flawless 2) Created the "Nonflawless" Pool and will change it to a "Practice" pool next season 3) Will add another Loss Forgiven to Mercy cards next season 4) Stopped increasing the Power cap during Seasonal expansions 5) Gave ways to focus Adept weapons (and reduced the cost) 6) Incentiviced players to carry others to Flawless Even though Trials is meant to reward PVP skill, you can still earn some great loot as a casual PVP player. You may not always go Flawless or win every game, but that's the game EDIT: Also, matchmaking feels bipolar, because players tend to group with players of a similar skill level. If you're "bad", you'll most likely group with other "bad" players. This can lead to some lopsided games.

      • What your experiencing is SBMM. Bungie’s is very simple, it splits players roughly into 2 pools. > 1.0 and < 1.0. As soon as you become a 1.0 KD player, you’re considered equivalent with everyone above you. It’s why you’ll often see teams of 0.6-0.8 KD players with a single 1.2, going up against a team of 0.6-0.8 KD players with 2 2.0s.

        • Catch 22 problem. Lighthouse should be reached by the best only (not me) if Trials were a weekly tournament. And in a tournament sooner or later you fight against the best no matter what you do. But in that case only top 1% played each other cause everyone else refrained playing their cannon fodder. Current iteration baits in average players who neither are ready for a tournament nor for Lighthouse. As an average player you can win only being carried purposely or by sheer luck of matchmaking.

        • There is already a practice pool just as you're asking for in place next season. I am not a fan of the newly implemented MM labs, but the option is there.

        • It’s created two extremes. On one end the hardcore trials players and on the other casuals

        • Trials can't exist in its current form with more matchmaking restrictions. Furthermore trials is designed as endgame pvp asking for the separation of better players goes against the design philosophy of the playlist. Sbmm provides a humbling experience when the veil is lifted.
