Stompees, collectively recognized as the “sweat exotic” by many and a controversial topic among players, have been a beloved part of my toolkit for a long time now as a former warlock main who now has used hunters for longer than I would like to admit. Stompees are regarded as a top pick for their neutral game and have loads of benefits at 100% uptime however, top players would agree that the recently announced changes kill the exotic.
Prior to season 21, stompees had a -50 AE penalty at all times while the proposed nerf is tying the movement to the dodge cooldown. With 100 mobility and 3 utility kickstarts, marksman dodge has a 14~ second cooldown while gamblers dodge has a 19~ second cooldown. 19 seconds in pvp is a long time for a simple ability with minimal impact despite the amount of investment required
Stompees are recognized as an issue because of their usage rate instead of the strength of the exotic perk. The exotic works the same way that exotics like Dunemarchers and Transversive steps work except stompees are now the only exotic that require something to active their mobility benefits.
The issue people raise with the exotic is the benefits given to the jump, and instead of addressing that aspect, the entire exotic is nerfed. The jump benefits are what are seen as the issue but directly from the mouths of many controller and former last gen players, this isn’t as big of an issue as it is made out to be. In fact, controllers make it easier to track players in air compared to mouse and keyboard due to the reticle friction and aim assist that controllers are given.
My proposed changes to stompees would be to bring it in line with the other movement exotics by removing the AE penalties and maybe tying the jump height boost of the exotic with the mobility stats. Other exotics can change cooldown duration to abilities, so another proposed change would be to increase the dodge cooldown while the exotic is equipped. Even reverting it to the previous iteration of -50 would be preferable to the new changes. With it at its current strength, it still isn’t as powerful as the exotics that buff abilities and weapons and it isn’t as much of a problem as you would think.
And one last note, please do consider the feedback provided by people who are speaking up about this because those who care about the game and genuinely want to play it.

I'm a fan of this berf wand I didn't think the jump was the issue, it was the long slide to aping...

Edited by xNBK-YOTIEx: 5/12/2023 1:58:46 PMI absolutely love hearing all these hunters making excuse after excuse to why the stompee nerf is so bad while they justify every nerf to titan and warlock

2 RepliesIf we're getting ophidian and starfire nerfed to hell, you can have a decision on your stomps. Your damn class ability is up every 12 seconds anyway, relax.

1 ReplyIn my opinion it’s not a nerf (directly) but a change to what you prioritize (kind of like the SC change). I believe it’s a change that did good, although I do want to say that it would’ve been better if they instead only made the Jump and Slide the thing to prioritize. Sprinting should be maxed out and Strafing should be maxed out or at least Tier-6/7 mobility even if Dodge is unavailable. I said this on another post but I think Stompees should’ve went full force into the Sprinting aspect making the Sprint more like Amplified Speed Booster if you use the Dodge it makes you have Speed without the running start and when your dodge comes back or you die you go back to normal Stompee speed.

7 RepliesThe issue is a general one. Exotic armor we have for each class only a few outstanding, some useful and many crap. Meaning all players are leaning into a handful go to exotics all the time. Why using 2nd/3rd tier crap when you can use the best (assuming majority of Veterans owning all exotics). The discrepancy between stellar and crap is so big that we rather use a mediocre roll of a stellar exotic than a god roll with perfect stats of a crap exotic (many of those taking dust in my vault and for sure yours as well). Second problem is that some exotics see singular use in PvE or PvP only, few are viable in both sandboxes. Even though Bungie is meanwhile balancing a lot separately they often punish an Exotic in both sandboxes even if it outperformed in their view, not necessarily ours, only in one. Finally they seem to believe players/we have more fun or are intrinsically motivated to constantly change/adapt loadouts/builds. (Some are, I am rather not but that might be a me problem.) Leading to constant nerf/buff cycles and hence these results. Stompees and its upcoming changes along with all other changes are not the issue. They are a symptom.

1 ReplyI play stompee and I don’t even jump and shoot so don’t care about the AE. I just like the movement speed and slide. Simple example without stompee titan and warlock will always get to a specific sniper spot faster than a hunter is that balanced ? Idk where bungie got the “harder to track on controller” data to justify this nerf. I play on Xbox with elite 2 and I don’t feel that. Warlock can float titan have lion both are easier to shoot in air no? I don’t really care about buff nerf coz it’s just how they keep the game live when no new contents. But this one really doesn’t make sense.

4 RepliesEdited by livin like larry: 5/11/2023 4:57:44 PMBunch of dummies in the comments 😂 good players will continue to dominate lol this nerf is just a nuisance. The change to stompees is completely asinine and unnecessary, but I just find it funny how people are like “oh no what will you do without your crutch :(“ The good players will continue to dominate you anyways, that’s what.

If nothing else, I do think it would be nice of bungie to say that they hear the feedback on stompees, even if they don’t intend to change them anymore, I’d be interested in hearing on if they are committed to these current changes or if they are willing to change them more in the future. Granted I’m someone who always has stompees equipped, so of course I want them put back, but maybe with these changes it’s time to just switch classes entirely. I almost feel like these changes are going to make hunters slower than the other classes by quite a large margin.

5 RepliesJump height and extra slide tied to dodge not overall speed boost that should satisfy both sides .
