Skill Based VS Connection Base Matchmaking

Bungie, I understand that connection based match making is important to making firefights in the crucible feel good and no one wants to be facing lagy opponents who feel impossible to kill while they teleport around corners. But on the other hand getting absolutely stomped is also an awful experience. I joined a game of supremacy mid match and at that time the score was 124 to 22 with the team I joined only having 4 of the typical 6 per side. People are leaving games because they don't feel they have a chance then your matchmaking is throwing people into the meat grinder. There are a lot of complaints about PvP and the sandbox but I promise you that experiences like this will push players away from PvP no matter how balanced the sandbox is.

  • Alright so I fully understand stand having connections restrictions on pvp (especially trials and comp) but here's my problem with connection based match making, I have satellite internet (due to living in the sticks) my ping and latency really aren't that bad and everyone I've played with has never experienced any issues, but I can't match make at all with randoms, not for strikes, missions, nothing Connection based match making for pve content or even gambit/none competitive game modes (like trials/comp) really knee caps those of us with minor issues or restrictions of service Like I said I fully support it for competitive pvp content but seriously the whole damn game? And how sensitive is this setup for CBMM? I got 20mg upload and 180mg down load with a ping rating of 65, latency of 5% (I got buddy with fiber who's stats are worse) so would love some answers #bungie #support #matchmaking

  • My experience with PvP this week. Playing Supremacy with CBMM: Most matches started with less than a full roster, with fairly long times to get matches started. Stomps were common. PvP gods with 40+ kills in almost every match. Fun factor, negligible. Playing regular Crucible with SBMM immediately after playing Supremacy: Full rosters for each game, and matches were made fairly quickly. No blowouts and matches are competitive for the most part. The PvP gods disappeared. Fun was had. I'm an average player. Which of these experiences do you think will motivate me to play more PvP?

CBMM is for top level players, cheaters and youtubers. SBMM is for the rest of the PVP players

      • The tryhards cried hard and loud for CBMM to come back. It's brought back for GG and now they're whining about how there's not enough people. When CBMM was brought in with Beyond Light, Crucible participation plummeted and now it's happening again with GG Supremacy.

        • The connections aren't even better in "connection based" so it's funny as hell.

        • You cant have either CBMM or SBMM on a p2p connection. CBMM is still laggy with different skilled players. SBMM is players that are the same as you but lag. Until the get rid of the p2p connection their no reason to take any pvp serious.

        • Part of me wonders if this connection based nonsense is all about reminding players why SBMM is better for most players, The dev team made their position plain. "We turned off SBMM over player pressure and it killed the game mode" this is a good reminder for people who want it back that it will just kill the game mode again

        • Getting stomped isn’t awful. It’s just a game. Get over it and move on like in any other game. And CBMM has nothing to do with you not having 6 players. CBMM still puts in the correct number of players. Meanwhile supremely has been the best fun I’ve had in crucible in a while because there’s not laggers in my games. Unlike you I don’t think winning is the most important in in a casual gametype. Fun is and SBMM kills all fun in the crucible.

What's hilarious to me is that the SBMM playlists are still there for those that clearly need it's protection, yet they'd rather load up Supremacy, get clapt for 10 minutes, and whine about it, than actually go play in the SBMM playlists. Why is that? It's not because you HAVE to play supremacy. You can complete the event and get the title without it. It's not because options aren't there. There's multiple SBMM playlists available. So why would they rather get rekt and come cry about it instead of playing the playlists we have available that will protect them from the big bad meanies in CBMM playlists???

Anyone who thinks they should have easy wins all the time is delusional. The closer the scoreboard the better.

Neither pure SBMM and CBMM are proper solutions. D2 population is too heterogeneous to offer a proper PvP experience for all using those two standards. That's why is so hard to find a solution and why Bungie struggles so much.

          • It seems anytime you join a game mid match its not the same type of MM as if you joined a game as its being created.

          • It's awful. Played 4 matches, collected the crests for the title and won't touch again. CBMM is an abomination, but the mode itself is terrible. The stomping team gets super upon super every 30s, so that they can stomp harder. It lacks any sense whatsoever...

? Before they put in the leaver pentalty people were leaving the sbmm lobbies LIKE CRAZY so let’s not pretend like this is a cbmm issue.

            • And here we go again. No matter what settings to matchmaking Bungie makes there will be those who complain and demand it to be changed again. So what is Bungie to do when we the community can not decide what we want. Skill based matchmaking... no one is happy. Connection based matchmaking... no one is happy Mixture of both... no one is happy.

            • I’ve had a fantastic time with the CBMM. It along side the game mode itself have made me actually log into destiny for the sole reason to play crucible. I’ve seen people actually use something other than Immortal. While I have an issue with the game starting with less players and there not being a mercy rule for whatever reason, I love the playlist. It reminds me of why I played crucible so much before SBMM.

              • There is a major problem with SBMM that no one is willing to acknowledge because it destroys any antisbmm argument. Unless you're an average player with an average kda, which is the largest MM pool. Then it's very common that the game will pull players from higher or lower skill brackets simply because there are people so good or so bad that they can't be regularly matched with similar players so it matches with players in a different bracket. For instance if you have a 1.4-1.5 kda, it fairly common to get 1 or 2 players who are in the 1.6-1.7 bracket. Pretty much which ever team gets them or the better player, wins. It's also possible that if your kda is around 1.0 you can get players so bad that they cause the team to lose. In summary sbmm only really help those in the 1.1-1.3 bracket as they have the largest pool.

                  • Who cares anymore. SBMM or CBMM. Doesnt matter if the game feels like an abandoned cash cow gacha game. The game is slowly dying out. Put in extra strict SBMM and scare away the last remaining players, i don't care anymore. I used to put all my arguments and feedback and why a certain system doesn't work but like i said it just doesn't matter anymore cause the game has had its time. They will squeeze out the last $ from their loyal fans during the upcoming 2 years and just keep the game on the bare minimum life support.

                    • The biggest gripe I have with CBMM is that exposes regular players to cheaters. There are good players in this game but also a lot of cheaters that never miss a shot and don't take damage like the rest of us. I am glad I don't see those much with SBMM
