Lobby Balancing (in its current form) probably helps you as often as it hurts you.
Lobby Balancing should be in the game, but it can definitely be improved on. Teams should always be as "even" as possible
I personally don't think teams are unbalanced that often, but I don't have any data to support that point of view

Why though? Why should teams always be as even as possible? Shouldnt the better players win more than the worse players? Doesn't this create an environment where improvement is no longer desirable because it only leads to more 1v3 situations where you are forced to carry your team?

It depends on the purpose of the mode. If you're playing for fun, then SBMM and Lobby Balancing are obviously needed. Close games are more fun than blow-outs, and even teams result in close games. If you're playing for rewards, then SBMM isn't required and actually harms the "fairness" of the game. This is what you're thinking of. I think Lobby Balancing is still needed for this type of game. Modes like Comp, Control, and Iron Banner are all played for fun. There is very little reward for winning vs. losing. Trials is meant to reward players. Losing results in a significant penalty. If you don't "improve" or "get gud", Trials is going to be difficult. The irony of all this is that for good players, Trials is easier than Comp or Control.

False that it helps me more often than not Matchmaking is a complete and utter stomp maybe 1/3 is a stomp from my side
-
Why would it hurt you more than help? That doesn't make sense unless you are a top player the game has to balance around

Im nowhere near top but im above average skill bracket around like TV~ in the hidden elo
