I've played since D1 beta and I have NEVER seen so many server issues. This is ridiculous. I'm an avid Destiny fan, but I'll not purchase the next expansion is this continues. Enough is enough.

1 ReplyI'm beginning to wonder if the game has become too complex and the servers are crashing due to integer overflow. Before I go further, I would like to say I am not a game developer or coder. Nor am I trying to fear monger about the end of the game. I am simply stating a pattern I have seen before in a completely different game that probably has no bearing on the current situation. This is a theory and nothing more, but I'd like input on it. With that said, and I'll try to keep this brief, the game is starting to do what happens in late game modded stellaris. Now that game is horribly optimized, but is infamous for late game lag, even in unmoved games. This is because the game checks populations to do job updates, add pops, etc. This becomes a problem when there are thousands of pops that have to each be counted. Each pop may be in a sub species category that just increases the complexity. The game freezes, then crashes after a while. Eventually the save dies entirely and can't be recovered. Now how does this relate to destiny? Look at our weapons, hundreds if not thousands of combinations, spread across millions of players. If the game checks them to verify they are legit, that's alot of work. There is also old code that was from launch that still is probably being checked. Since people like hoarding weapons for any possible situation, there are a lot of weapons (and armor) that is likely being checked to ensure its valid and its where its supposed to be. For example, say 500k players have half the vault filled with weapons (300 weapons). That's. 15 million unique items that the system needs to track. Then there is constant equipment switching, using the app to move gear, etc. There is quite alot of things going on in the background. Why now? Honestly, I don't know. Maybe it's because we keep getting more and more gear. I'd like to know thoughts on this. I think the only way to fix some of these issues (IF I am right) is delete stuff. Which I know people aren't happy about but it may be necessary. They could start with things like uncommon gear, and simplifying ghosts to be ornaments rather unique items. There is also old items like tokens and planet materials that haven't been used in forever. This would also likely mean they would need to almost completely renovate the game, like a operation health like siege had. This was longer than I expected, but I'd like to know any thoughts on this. Once again I have not understanding of these things and I'm just going off of experience with a completely different game.
