There’s a lot of people on here saying that Lightfall was a huge disappointment for them.
In my view, Lightfall is a fairly average expansion, similar to the ones listed in the title. There are things I like and dislike about each of them, but they all seem to be in roughly the same ballpark, in terms of overall quantity and quality of content.
Is it just personal preference? Sometimes I’m scratching my head over some of the comments, wondering what’s so different about this expansion.

The DLC and season are great. There’s a ridiculous amount of content and Strand is a lot of fun. The only let down for me was the story compared to WQ. They dropped the ball there but the story has never been strong in D2. I think many players feel the same way I do and that’s why their numbers are so good.
-
The difficulty changes has ruined the fun . If population is high it’s clearly because people are still playing the campaign. Idk where these numbers come from considering me and my 2 kids friends list says 4 people combined is playing, out of 170 something. Somebody fudging numbers

- Terrible and very short campaign - Hollow destination - banana cabals is nothing close to new specie/enemy type. - Underwhelming subclass and weapons - 1 strike and a very bad one - No pvp update except an oppressive SMG - 2 pinnacle weapons/glaives immediately either disabled or nerfed to the ground - Only recycled weapons and old weapons refarm - Nothing to chase except a few useless triumphs and perks Raid has a nice skybox. Nothing close to Garden, Vow or even Crypt. 1st and planetary encounters are fun and creative, rest feels like filler. Priced higher than other expansions. Lack of competition is the only thing that keeps this very lazy expansion from being deserted.
-
Lightfall just felt rushed, messy and unfinished imo. The Strand subclass tie in was very poorly done, too many story holes and nonsense.

Lightfall is great, I love the location and the hint of ratchet and clank vibes 🙂 Rise of iron was good although the April update was meh

1 ReplyEdited by BIRB: 4/8/2023 2:45:49 PMI disliked the story. Everything else seems well implemented and I’m having a good time playing after taking a break from destiny for a while. I think lightfall recieved the amount of negativity it did because the campaign is mainly what people get their first impressions out of. The witch queen campaign is my favorite campaign Bungie has made. With the narrative leading up to the big finale, this was supposed to be where the grand stage takes place. But it’s quite evident that lightfall was split in half to give us one more expansion the final shape. The result feels like lightfall is one extended trailer for the final shape. Literally the opening and ending cutscene of lightfall happened in seemingly one shot with the whole vanguard still standing on the helm. I don’t know what the veil is, yet everyone keeps talking to me like I do. I missed a season or two before lightfall came out so initially I thought maybe this was just lore I missed out on. Turns out all my destiny friends were just as clueless. In the campaign, I don’t really get to know rohan to care about his death. Nimbus is just awful character writing; their lines are way too corny and they talk like an actual 13 year old. It’s obnoxious. The thing that really puts the nail in the coffin for the campaign for me was nimbus’s reaction to rohans death. They brush it off like it’s nothing. The quest after the campaign elaborates further and we get a reason for why they act the way they do. But I believe this should’ve been in the campaign. Somewhere in the campaign they need to establish that the cloudstriders value stoicism, or at least Rohan does, but I don’t think that very was well established. Overall the narrative feels very rushed. Like as if some last minute decision happened and the narrative team had to scramble to throw something together in time for its release…Why does this sound familiar..?

1 ReplyWhat made people "mad" about Lightfall were mainly 4 things: 1) Bad campaign with horrible story and terrible design. This was a huge let down because Bungie seemed finally to have found the rifht path to follow to bring a good narration to the players and the Trailer hyped the campaign like something big. 2) The discovery that Lightfallis basically a filler expansion with cut contents took by TWQ and TFS while, again, it was hyped light the next big step for D2. 3) The "bring the challange back" philosophy that kinda pissed off many because the game felt suddenly more time waisting in a bad way with bullet spongy enemies. 4) The fact that Strand, as it was for Stasis, was to complete by buying Aspects and Fragmets through a slow and boring grind.

It's because all the marketing and trailers are very misleading....

1 ReplyLightfall and Neomuna is like Forsaken and Getting the Tangled shore....only we get no Dreaming city to go along with it! It seriously feels like something major is missing with this expansion. It's like we only got part of the actual storylines

4 RepliesEdited by WifeAggro_AFK: 4/7/2023 12:42:42 PMWas a disappointment because the expectations for the story were so high on the heels of witchqueen. A majority of the story missions were not engaging and the story was written poorly. This is our initial first impression of the new DLC that EVERYONE is engaging with. If you're a lore person, it was a fail. If you're into an engaging mission it was a fail - those strand tutorial missions were aweful. If you like immersive writing - it was a huge fail..fist bump amiright? The rest of the expansion is solid. Great QOL updates, updated difficulty (except why the raid is so easy i don't know), new build crafting system (albeit feels kinda shallow right now) , destructible environments were good, new lost sectors were good So yes, mid, but disappointing because expectations were higher. Marketing team did a banger job.

1 ReplyI think it was bad because of the campaign. We had more filler missions than I can remember. One whole mission in a vex construct so we could practice using strands, stuff like that. At times, the story made no sense and then poof it's over, and it left everyone with way more questions than answers. At least at the end of Shadowkeep, Rise of Iron and Witch Queen we felt like we accomplished something. We defeated a major for or something. This time we defeated a lieutenant that we beat already. And it didn't do any good. Then there's the difficulty change that Bungie did. I'm not going there since it's been discussed ad nauseum in the forums. I'm usually non-judgmental but even I was disappointed in this DLC, especially for the price we paid

1 ReplyBecause they cut up the story again to split it into 2 expansions
-
To use the prevailing metaphor they promised us an ‘infinity war’ and unfortunately delivered’rise of skywalker instead. At least that seems to be the gist of it. Otherwise your bang on the money with it being comparable to the listed expacs you referenced.

Roi had a fun campaign, cool loot, fun raid, and an alright story. Beyond light had an interesting villain…. Stasis was interesting until the nerfs. Shadow keep….I don’t even remember what happened there. Lightfall? Terrible new character, terrible story, patrol zone I don’t want to go back to despite how cool it looks, increased difficulty but rewards are…you guessed it….terrible, and resources have been hit again making it tedious to grind for things needed to level up. If there is any d2 dlc that wasn’t tested properly it’s this one.

Rise of iron had siva shiro-4. and ofc saladin and the iron lords. new pvp maps and also artifacts were introduced alongside cool exotics such as ophidian aspects, transversive steps and outbreak. Lightfall has nimbus (worst character in destiny history) and 5 minutes of the other guy. I believe that even news reporter jisu has more lines than the other guy. And most of the exotics in this expansion suck imo. (2 glaives? realy?) And that weird ice monkey with russian hat titan helmet that i have not seen being used a single time. Also disjunction is still in this expansion. And all the other expansions were not played in empty night city. Other than that its pretty okay. Im enjoying it.

The story was atrocious, it was a strand tutorial as a campaign, we still don't concretely know what the veil is, and the raid was weenie hut jr. levels of easy.

1 ReplyRise of iron had good stuff especially when moments of triumphs came along

1 ReplyRise of iron was actually good and fun

People just like to complain similar to Twitter arguments people blurt out non sense hoping someone engages in pointless banter.

6 RepliesTransphobia and a general burnout from high expectations the 9th year of the Light vs Dark saga. That’s why LF is hated. Bungie literally told us this was going to be a cheesy 80’s action movie AND IT IS! The missions were so fun and challenging playing with my friends, and the final mission is my favorite one to replay because of the battle we have with Caital’s forces on our side. I think Lightfall is just how you put it: average like the rest of the DLCs you mentioned. I liked it and had a lot of fun playing.

I started with Beyond Light, grew up there, enjoyed it, and then moved away but Europa is my hometown and origin in the Destiny Universe. The Witch Queen (although Hive stuff is not really my thing) iis a solid game with good activities. Lightfall is rather puzzling - some of the mission stories are good, the city has areas of interests with engaging activities, but it often feels widely deserted which almost reflects on how incomplete we feel in this game. Overall, I like Lightfall. As A DLC though, it shouldn't be average. This is my crtique and criticism. I'm a Splicer so I'm glad there are Vex Simulations.

As well the entire verbiage from Strand was changed as the Anti-Barrier rounds for Strand use to be called “infested rounds” showing how last minute these changes were As well the raid itself has a encounter that feels like it was pulled from a whole other raid/dungeon and leaks showed a psion boss that we were supposed to get instead that has similar mechanics to the rest of the raid. The DLC is the ultimate cut paste cut paste

I really enjoyed Lightfall it was a good first campaign but I'm a little disappointed becaus, after all, it came after masterpiece that was witch queen. the season stuff was underwhelming though
