I feel alienated as a player

I only started playing Destiny in Season 18, and since then I've put 500 hours into this game. I was really excited to be present for a new expansion release with Lightfall... except instead of feeling like I was part of something I just feel like I'm being pushed out. You've "brought the challenge back to Destiny" mostly by just raising the power of level of various activities, so what am I supposed to do until I hit that level? I want to do some legend lost sectors to unlock those awesome new exotics you added. I want to play Legend Avalon so I can get the most out of this really cool weapon your team put energy in to create. But my light level is just too low. I guess I'm supposed to grind out gear from other activities except you've turned up the difficulty there as well meaning it takes longer. This isn't respecting players' time, it's the complete opposite. I used to be so excited to finish work on friday and spend my weekend playing the game, but now it feels like a chore.

  • I feel for Toasted. The majority of the game is locked behind finishing the campaign. There is nothing as frustrating as trying to find all the hours necessary to try over and over to run the campaign missions. It's so easy to say, "just do it." Well, I've been "doing it" since D1 and this is the first time I felt Bungie has really just said, "We're going to show you all this incredible stuff we created, but we don't care if you can't manage to get any of it." The indifference started with weapon crafting and the immense difficulty of casual players to ever obtain enough of necessary red borders and other materials to actually get any benefit. I'd be interested to know the percentage of regular Destiny 2 players who have yet to finish the campaign and be able to play the majority of Lightfall content.

It's been a problem for some of the more casual players in my clan too. Before Lightfall, I'd help them with true endgame like raids, dungeons, GMs. Now, they're asking for help for legend nightfalls and legend Avalon. It sucks. I don't want to do 10+ legend nightfall every week, but I also don't want to leave my clan mates hanging. In terms of activity, this is the lowest activity I've had in a clan in the 2.5 years I've been a clan leader. It has nothing to do with interest and everything to do with the fact that midgame is now endgame, and there is no midgame anymore. You go straight from beginner content to endgame-level content. So when that happens, people ask for help, but it's such unrewarding garbage that nobody wants to do it. GMs have great loot, and dungeons/raids have great loot, but legend nightfalls give you nothing except Guardian Ranks, which don't matter because they reset every season anyway. It's honestly awful, there's virtually no progression anymore, and there's no consistency.

      • I completely agree. They raised the floor, and lowered the roof. Narrowed the experience. I think that the bonuses are tied to players time active in the game, so they made everything take that much longer. I just played through beyond light and witch queen and had a blast. More fun, more engaging, better story than lightfall. More notable touches like exo challenges, and crafting your own perks on weapons and the quests for the aspects of stasis. That expansion took you from running patrols to lost sectors to empire hunts to nightfalls to heroic exo challenges. It was both fun, rewarding, challenging and the difficulty was spot on, for me at least. Each time you were challenged to improve your skills, your builds, evaluate how you play, and what the meta should be for this quest, this section, all feeling natural to do. When i did I hard quest, it did feel good. Slowly turning your average casual into a soft shell, exited to try something harder. Enter Lightfall. Lets have massive balls of health, run at you in small arenas with platforms you can fall off, and lets have the balls of health do more damage to the player. Run and hide, only you can't really stay still and there is no cover as you get mobbed with the enemy density, and your not powerful so you can't really be aggressive, oh I fell off running backwards, or the adds just team shot me, or that dude grabbed me and one shot me cause I got too close. Also less rewards to be had outside of upgrade modules and shards. I didn't find it that fun. I felt relief that the experience was over. It felt unfair, and my time didn't feel respected, and wasn't a rewarding experience, loot wise or personal growth wise. I guess the move away from Activision to Sony is showing. Shadowkeep to Forsaken was the move from Sony to Acti. Draw your own conclusions.

        • That's why its stupid. Instead of adding a challenge, they simply turned up enemy health, which really only made things take longer. To make matters worse, you get the same rewards. Moreover, its somehow brainwashed people into thinking this was a good choice and apparently dont notice that they are working harder for the same pay. Its nuts. I dont think they really care about difficulty though. I really think they just want people logged in longer.

          • Stupid. Sounds like another consumer that didn't research before they made a purchase. Imagine the players that have been playing since 2014 & have been waiting for them to bring difficulty & challenge BACK to the franchise. What about these users? Bungie made a very obvious mistake by making the game super casual & easy with Shadowkeep. The passionate fan base has been championing for them to go back to the glory days of Destiny. They finally go back to the original formula & the few flys caught by the ish are upset it doesn't stick anymore. LOL.

            • For some legit advice you can basically do anything until you’re like 1750 which is the point where random legendary drops will get you. From there you need powerfuls which are any challenge like three crucible games, completing 8 crucible bounties, running defiant battlegrounds, and I think basic Avalon actually raises your light level so as long as you have friends it’s still doable as it will rise you to 1790. Once you reach 1800 then you need pinnacles but at that point your artifact should be high enough that you’d be able to do most anything in the game. Just remember to always be doing bounties for that artifact level.

            • frankly until you get to max power you can litterally do any activity to get close to soft cap then after that go for powerful and pinnacle activities. u gotta grind my guy this isnt call of duty where things are handed to you relatively quickly.

            • I used to enjoy the challenge of soloing stuff. When I soled flawless-ed Shattered Throne I was over the moon. I tried to solo Avalon Legend yesterday. https://www.bungie.net/7/en/User/GameHistory/1/4611686018441943435?bgn=NeddyMorai 6000 kills and 200 deaths on the boss where you play gambit. I will never be able to do this. Basically Destiny no longer wants me as a player. Thats the only way I can view this.

              • Have you tried adding garlic spread? xD All srsness, the timing's rough as the story's going South before it picks back up. There's one more year of "this" Destiny before something new starts sooo... Recommendation for low-level stuff, stick to the normal areas. Once you've gone through the campaign to get Strand, you can either go through older campaigns to get the Meditations or do normal content like public events and what not in older areas like EDZ and Nessus. If you don't mind grouping, there's the Fireteam search provided by Bungie - https://www.bungie.net/7/en/Fireteams/Search?platform=0&activity=0 - to group with others during more difficult parts. A lot of the game is soloable, however, having your Light Level up is required, or at the minimum, knowing what tricks are needed to overcome major obstacles. Beyond this, find your favorite weapons and sub-class and have fun! Cheers, Monk

              • Unfortunately for alot of us, the game has been feeling more and more of a chore for a little bit now, this season has exacerbated the feeling for pretty much everyone. Either you're okay with the changes and likely think "skill issue" and, "if you have a problem you were never a hardcore player", or you're not okay with it because it's just boring being forced off the weapons you want to run in favor of the weapons you can run.

              • Leveling up doesn't make much difference now. The change to Legend Lost Sectors has completely changed the pace of them. ... to really boring and pointless.

                • They're experts in alienation: They routinely alienate soloplayers, year in year out. They spent all last year alienating Warlock Class players. They alienated returning players by unnecessary power grinds. They alienated many in back-to-back LGBT stories - even supporters of said real world concerns. They alienated casual and any players who simply don't enjoy tedious levels of artificial difficulty. They've beyond alienated and actually killed off Gambit players by years of complete Gambit neglect. They've alienated Veterans with many thousands of hours of Destiny time by locking the ranks to a DLC buy-in. So, yeah, I feel your pain here but you should know they're experts at alienation.

                  • Light level. Why? It’s not for the players that’s for sure. It would be a truly great game without light levelling.

I feel alienated because Lightfall was no where near what it was marketed as. Complete cash grab. Selling us reworked mod systems and reskins like it was new content and a shitty subclass that is one big gimmick. I would of rather paid the 100$ for just 3-4 new REAL strikes and 3-4 new crucible maps.

Well in 2025 when bungies new cash cow comes out the only people still playing destiny 2 will be the addicts and that's a fact. So it'll become an even more absurdly shallow grind for nothing but scaling numbers to counter scaling numbers. A treadmill of nothing. And constantly asking for money to stay on the that vapid ride. Addicts are easy to use.

                      • I started Destiny 2 maybe around 5 weeks ago and you fly from 1600 to 1770 without issue, all the while upgrading gear. I played the DLCs (excluding Lightfall - not purchased this) and you level up heaps there too. If you need to grind for better gear simply run Nightfalls, Dares and bounties etc. I'll not buy lightfall till I've got at least 1800 gear score, currently sitting at 1795 but still need better armour with more resilience. Coming here from The Division 2.. the grind is real but it takes time to get good gear as RNG is just the worst in D2 it seems :D

                      • They never respected players time. They know the longer we are in game the more money they can possibly make. thats why you see lack of rewards, bad spawn points, long empty corridors, no sparrow areas, having to load to space before going to next activity, lack of mm, etc. they will do anything to keep you in the game longer, its not about good gameplay like it use to be, its about every dime they can squeeze out of you. Thats why its the only game (that i know of) that charges for an anniversary event
