I have seen too many stray thoughts in this in the Lore topic so I thought I would give my thoughts.
(Wall of text warning)
Through 3 points, may I convince you from a lore standpoint why Oryx was not a Disciple.
1. No Glaive, no Disciple- Oryx did not have a glaive, something every Disciple has had thus far. (Except Calus, but lets face it he really wasn’t a Disciple). By the rite of the Sword Logic Oryx would not have had one. The Sword Logic dictates you take what you want to gain power, never accept a gift. (Hence why the worms eat at the Hive. They were given to the Krill.) Oryx was too fanatical to the Deep and its Logic to have taken one. May I further point to the fact that he told Crota he would give him nothing except his first sword. He followed the Sword Logic to all the I’s and T’s.
2. Oryx’s devotion was to the Deep and the Deep alone- Oryx says this numerous times over. Even in his discourse about how he “will make sure” he will be eternal, he says he will fall to something that loves what he loves: the Deep, a power and principle. Something devoted to the Sword Logic. Now, I am not here to take the argument that we proved him right or wrong, but I want to point to his devotion- fanaticism -to the Darkness. The Deep says that Oryx was “his man” in Unveiling as well. If then, Oryx was so devoted to the Deep and was the Deep’s man, then why would he follow someone who’s goal is *not* what the Deep’s is? The Deep wants a universe full of strong life that deserves to live and to keep proving that point- The Final Shape. The Witness’ goal is not this. Its Final Shape is the end of all things. Not the same.
3. Oryx arguably was in par with the Witness in power- I must address a question that I am predicting will be asked—“how in the world did we beat him then?” Well, I must point to the fact that we A) killed nearly all of his tribute, thanks to killing Crota, his main source, and then his court. And B) Out of hubris he was eating/messing with Light, something that would weaken him. C) His worm was eating at him already. He was not following his nature and his tribute was running dry. Now that that is out of the way, he probably was on oar with the Witness. He communed with the Deep, that primordial force, itself and received power from it. He killed a Worm-god. He must have had a loooot of power to do so. Also, he even says when he uses a verse from the Tablets of Ruin, he makes himself vulnerable but says that he as powerful or more powerful than the Worm his god. The power to Take is a very high power, thus making me believe he was on par with the Witness.
So then, why was working with the Witness during the collapse? Why did Savi and Xivu have glaives?
I believe he was working with the Witness during the Collapse so he could hunt the Traveler down. In his letter to Crota, he said he would not pass his oath to kill the Traveler to him. This makes me think that the only reason he worked with the Witness is to find the Traveler. To eventually find a way to kill it. Eventually, I believe he would turn in the Witness and say, “Listen, I have stood with you long enough. Prove to me by the Logic of the Deep, whose power you use, that you deserve to live in this fettered existence.”
As for Savi and Xivu, lets face it, the only reason they would join the Witness is because they for sure were not as devoted to the Deep as Oryx. Savi toon the glaive because she saw an opportunity and used her cunning, thus feeding her worm. Xivu saw it most likely as an opportunity for war, which truly was the only thing she cared about. How she writes in the Books of Sorrow makes me feel as if she cared not for the Deep and found Oryx’s extreme devotion to it as odd.
Thank you for your time. Please feel free to correct me or open a discourse on a few points.

Oryx communed with the Deep We know the Deep is the Witness just another name for it, as Rhulk keeps talking about it in his own raid and we know how devoted that man was to the witness (and in his own lore book he went into the deep to talk with the witness but he fell into what was called the Abyss) Oryx isn’t eve close to the power of Rhulk and Rhulk was leagues bellow the Witness The order of power of disciples we know of (named) is Calus<Savathun<Xivu Arath<Nezerec<Rhulk (Nezerec being higher than Savathun as she got a suprise attack on him and the immediate attack was to bind him but strength wise Nezerec since she destroyed his body but not actually kill him) Oryx just was as we now know probably the weakest of the 3 just he was the king of taken then moved to Savathun then Xivu

Edited by Author: 3/23/2023 10:11:32 AMDo people just ignore the Witch Queen campaign? The Witness (Its voice) through the worm’s memory literally tell us how it manipulated Savathûn and subsequently created the Hive. The Sword Logic enacts the Final Shape. The Deep and the Sky means the Darkness and the Light, it is the analogy The Witness uses to help them understand as they could observe that on Fundament. Oryx communes with the Deep after he kills Akka, and the thing that 100% tells us that it was the Witness that talked to him is the fact that Oryx was GIVEN the power to Take. The Darkness itself does not give (We have had to learn how to wield the Darkness through our own determination, strength, and understanding), The Witness does as we see with its disciples. You are right in saying that Oryx was not a disciple but he still acted as one as that is his nature. He didn’t follow the orders of the Witness but his actions would still bring about the Final Shape. The problem is that Bungie had no clue what they were doing and it is explained through their mess ups as Oryx was making it clear that he wanted to destroy the Traveler.

1 ReplyEdited by Revenant360: 3/20/2023 9:09:30 PMWhat I gather from this is no glaive=no disciple. So the metaphysical esoteric amalgamation of consciousness we call the Witness designates who it's chosen commanders are by giving them... a pointy stick??? This makes zero sense. Glaives were part of Rhulk's culture, from his homeworld, and he took them with him after he destroyed his planet. Whether or not oryx was a disciple, I dunno. But a pointy stick is certainly not what denotes being a disciple.

1 ReplyShortest answer is that The Witness and Disciples weren’t a thing yet.

1 ReplyOryx killed worm Rulk enslaved worm to power ship Rulk weaker then witness ?

3 RepliesI mean, I thought it was pretty damn clear that Oryx was never a Disciple, but I forget some people here never played D1 or read it’s lore so…yeah.

4 RepliesEdited by Mareep: 3/20/2023 9:13:18 PMI keep trying to rationalize how Oryx could come back too, but idk. It seems like it could go either way on whether Oryx was a servant of the Witness or a servant of the Winnower. I don't think we even know if the Winnower really exists tho

Also because the witness didn't exist when the Character of Oryx was created, or When the books of sorrow were written The Witness is just a giant Retcon -
2 RepliesOryx wasn’t on par with the Witness. He used his taken powers only to take beings, never entire worlds. Rhulk toyed with Oryx and the hive throughout their crusade.

Edited by The Light Lord: 3/21/2023 1:19:36 AMOryx was definitely not a Disciple, but could have became one if he was alive after Savathun gained the Light. Savathun was being groomed to become a Disciple but never did in our timeline because she betrayed the Witness. Oryx does not have a Pyramid Ship like Rhulk (Throne World Pyramid), Nezarec (Moon Pyramid) and Calus (the Typhon Imperator) Moreover Oryx fought hard against Akka to beat him and learn the power to take, Rhulk straight up subjugated Akka, Yul, Eir, Ur, Xol & the mother Worm and forced them into servitude. Disciples are the highest power in the multiverse besides the Witness & the Traveler. I would say Hive Gods come close to their power however, as Hive Gods can slay those a rank above them (the Worm Gods)

1 ReplyYou know the Worm Gods were created by Rhulk? And yes Rhulk was weakened when we killed him too.

2 RepliesThey don't need to have glaives to be disciples. Only rhulk had one, and he had that glaive before he met the witness. It was his weapon, not a disciple's weapon. Nezarec didn't have a glaive, he had a scythe (I suppose an argument could be made for nezarecs whisper, but it's unclear if nezarec wielded this weapon ever or if it was just on his ship). Calus didn't have a glaive he had a heavy slug thrower and swords. Savathun didn't have a glaive she wielded, she just had a piece of one from rhulk (although her status as a disciple is ambiguous). Eramis has no glaive, although she isn't really a disciple either. Plus there are several instances where other characters have glaives that aren't disciples. Asher made one for us, he's not a disciple. There's the judgement of kelgorath which was forged with kelgoraths blade, but it's stated in the lore for that weapon that it was originally a sword. Either way, kelgorath wasn't a disciple, although xivu arath likely is. Unclear what weapon she uses, although she has been depicted with a sword in concept art. I haven't completed the cloudstrider quest for the stasis glaive yet so I can't comment on how that weapon was formed. I don't think oryx was serving the witness either though, he was on a crusade to become the final shape or die to allow the final shape to form. Plus he had to kill to satisfy his worm.

29 RepliesOryx didn't need to be a disciple he was a God and definitely on par with the witness. He was a machination of the witness but when he fell it set things in motion for the witness to show up. Oryx was going to take the whole solar system had he not been stopped. Oryx was one of humanity biggest threats and nothing but the witness and his disciples came close. Savathun was a threat but not really since her plan was to stop the witness by sealing the traveler.

20 RepliesOnly rhulk has had a glaive my dude. No other disciple has had a glaive. Nazareck's glaive has a broken blade where the scythe part used to sit. And all other glaives where made in the image of rhulk's glaive .
