TO EVERYONE: LANCE was Zavala. Zavala IS NOT LANCE.
Just because Lance is gone does not mean Zavala will die or has to die. They can just get a new VA

4 RepliesHonestly, I think they'll end up sending Zavala to Efrideet's colony. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet they have a majority of Zavala's voice lines done until Final Shape, and as far as lore is concerned, it would make sense. The reason Zavala fights is for the Traveler. In his own way, though he denies it, Zavala is almost religious about the Traveler. Hell, I used to have a theory that Zavala would end up as a Tyrant of the Light, ruling over the city with an iron fist in order to defend the light, banishing guardians who dared to commune with the darkness. That didn't end up happening, but he still holds the Traveler with reverence. With the Traveler gone, and him coming to peace with his past, there's really not a lot left for him in the city except for the people. If he feels that the people are safe, then he may move on. It won't be immediate. I assume it'll take pressure from Caiatl, Saladin and Ikora, but he's becoming more exhausted as time goes on. I could see a future vanguard where, after he leaves, Ikora joins the frontline forces, Osiris returns as the Warlock vanguard, Saint as the Titan vanguard, and, unless someone else gets rezzed before the end of this season, maybe Crow as the Hunter vanguard. I think it could be a fitting end for Zavala that doesn't require a recast. Then again, I'm down for everything as long as they don't replace him with Nolan North.

Honestly I’d be more sad if they killed Zavala instead of recasting him. Side note, an exotic named something like “Reddick’s Lance” with a glaive would be an awesome tribute to that amazing man.

1 ReplyIf he does get recasted, than the new actor might as well try to put their own spin on Zavala because I doubt they’d sound like Lance. I think recasting would be the most logical solution since Lance might’ve already voiced future seasons and he wasn’t the only voice of Zavala as you said, but all foreseeable paths end in controversy. There are many ways to look at this from a moral standpoint. Recasting could mean that we’re continuing Lance’s legacy, or showing that he was always replaceable. Killing off Zavala could be seen as giving Lance a heroic sendoff, or letting his legacy die with him. I think making us smile is what made Lance smile, so the best solution might be entirely up to us.

There are PLENTY of other characters that could take up the role of Commander of the Vanguard. It would be just plain disrespectful to make someone else Zavala.

It's more a matter of respect. Also he had a sort of unique voice so finding someone who sounds like him, would be a tall order. Personally I think whenever a voice actor or actor dies, it's better to do one of the following: kill the character off, have the character leave and replace them with a different character, or in the case of VAs, have the character suffer an accident and lose their voice.

When he read that meme of the guardian turning TWQ into a gun? That was monumental. They tried replacing cayde and it didn’t have the same nuance/impact. Because it wasn’t someone who knew the character as well as the original VA, wasn’t someone who became that character/ connected to him….it was mr. north impersonating cayde. So when the character died it didn’t have as big as impact on many. All this to say recasting is a terrible idea.

By far the US has the most players, and Destiny was made by an American corporation for an overwhelmingly American audience. Lance and his voice meant a lot more to millions of players than they ever realized. I'm not saying Zavala should die, but it might be for the better. He completed his character arc of accepting some of historically the city's enemies and not blaming himself for his son's death. It's not like it wouldn't be killing him off for no reason whatsoever for other non-English speaking audiences. They would still be emotionally invested and saddened by his death. You seriously need to get a grip.

But Lance was the one who was Zavala . And he could really get into character and become said character. It may be logical to get another “VA” in terms of story arcs. But it just wouldn’t be the same and would anger a lot of people.

Getting a new voice actor will irritate everyone who’s heard this mans voice since he started. It’s disrespectful to the one who loved playing the part to just replace him. I hope they give his character a good ending.
