I don’t know about “broken”, but it is a pointless system. A person who never picks up a fire team member, or died so much they didn’t contribute at all could have a high commendation score just because it is beneficial to give out commendations. Premade fire teams can just boost/farm them too. Even if you wanted to take it seriously the sheer lack of options and the fact you only can hand out one of each commendation further limits how meaningful they are. All this means the commendations and commendation score a player has in no way represents the kind of player they are. Had they instead had automatic commendations for things like most kills, most damage, least deaths, most revives, most support (heals/buffs/blocked damage) to ally’s, most (none kill) objectives triggered, etc. it would have been a better system. People can still farm them, sure, but I suspect most people wouldn’t care to or feel the need to. As for fixing guardian rank, that’s a whole different long post.

They're a neat little idea for optional player interaction, but the way they were implemented is just a case of "Get it out of the way so I can get my rewards" and invalidating their entire purpose.

The whole guardian ranking system is pretty bad.

Commendations is all a SCAM. See, they're running out of ideas to keep players and their "investors" pleased. What better way than to put some meaningless BS grind in the game. 750 Commendations? Seriously. Older players see right through this. But it's not the older players they count on, it's the New Lights. Because they've never experienced this stuff, it's all "new" to them. So if 70% of their playerbase is happy, and the other 30%(older players) aren't, it's a win for them. (And especially Sony and other investors).

Bungie forcing me to tell people “good job” in order to unlock stuff makes me want to do it less. I leave immediately after every activity.

I will but the idea is ok ONLY IF its is retroactive so a 1 hour player is not the same as an 8k hour player There is the ability to have negative commendations loke when people leave the group cause they wanted a checkpoint or someone was team killing with eager edge etc. No negative means no measure so yes as it stands absolute bs.

Earning a playmaker commendation in crucible feels awesome! It means you were happened to be standing directly to the left or right of that player who gave it to you.

The whole thing is useless. First, I am in the group that has their game lock up going to the Commendation screen, so I can't even tell which ones I have received. Needing 750 Commendation points (it's not actual commendations since I have 386 of the points with 71 given and 67 received) is really high for something that should be a decision up to the player as to if someone actually deserves them. Not knowing the point values of the cards seems to be purposely done to force me into content I do not want to go into in order to see how many points I get per card in those. I recently upgraded to Xbox Series X, and now I can finally give commendations. I saw the screen like 4 times before I upgraded last week. Some others with anything other than the latest gen consoles just get to watch a loading screen. It was even more ridiculous that one of our fireteam members in a raid never saw the commendations screen for the whole minute or two it gives you at the end of the raid, so he could not give any out because he was on a Xbox One X. So now I am not getting commendations from some who may want to give them out. I guess I can at least hand them out now to get my loot. I'll stick to the strikes and nightfalls as that is what I have done the most. Not being able to give the same card to both players in my fireteam during a strike makes them meaningless. What if everyone was having fun, and both players were fun. Maybe I was having an off day and got killed a bunch and both other players revived me. Then I would consider them both for an "Ally" card. Not to mention the cards themselves are meaningless. Why only "fun" and "ally" for strikes and nightfalls? Hmmm... I guess this person was "fun" because I watched them do ridiculous things 4 feet from my ghost and didn't revive me, so that was "fun" to watch. I'll give this person "ally" because the one time I didn't stun a champion it was this person, so they must have actually brought something to stun champions, too. Now I HAVE to give them positive commendations to fulfil my 750 point requirement and 20 commendations requirement. But wait, there's more. Even though I stunned almost every champion and revived people constantly, cleared mobs, and supported my solemnly, silent team, I got two "Joy Bringer" commendations. I do not care about doing the work, but why "Joy Bringer"? Oh, because I was on the left side in the Commendation screen. Meaningful content there. So even if I have a fireteam as bad as this situation, it is in my best interests to give positive commendations so it does not hurt me. People doing negative things are getting positive commendations because the system requires you to give it to make it not hurt your chances at things. Most times they don't even apply because everyone was just "business", everyone did their own thing, so none of us (myself included) were "fun" or an "ally". In general, a system like this with forced positive feedback and no negative feedback or options to pass that do not hurt you make it completely skewed and arbitrary, let alone meaningless. But you gotta give one out or you don't get yours...

Having to give out 20 for the weekly engram made them a chore.

I would be okay with the 750 if it weren't for the fact that it's reset every season. That was an absolutely terrible idea. I was actually looking forward to the system. I think it's a really cool and fun way to show off that you're a veteran. However, once I saw that it resets I realized. There's literally no point. It doesn't really show anyone if you're a long time veteran. All it really shows is just how much people grind a season. Personally I think the whole system shouldn't reset. It should be a milestone for our guardian from the start of lightfall (really from the start of it all) till the end. Each rank should require something more. All raid completions and/or lighthouse, flawless, etc. People should be able to look at your rank and know you've done the things. Instead you look and all you know is, you've grinded the things. It's stupid and I'm even bothering with it. Can't stress enough how it should not reset and the fact that it resets makes the whole thing pointless.

I think they're a good idea on paper but implemented poorly. We need more time to be able to dish them out to fellow Guardians for one thing. I also think it would be better to have commendations that reflect the actual style of play rather than generic "Fun" and "Ally" type options. It could be an easy fix to make them work well but yeah the need for 750 to go up a Guardian rank is too much.

What do you mean, commendations are fantastic. After playing a Crucible match with my new found friends, I want to be able to commend my mute teammates on a job well done. I can ask myself "who brought me the most joy in this glorious PVP match up among friends?", and then commend the most deserving of friends. I only wish I could commend everyone on both teams because I was lucky to be able to have the opportunity to make new friends online. Commendations are the glue that holds together the sunshine and rainbows in my most favorite game in the whole wide world. Bungie should spend more time on systems like this that help make new friendships. Having friends is the most meta team build that Destiny has ever had, we will beat raid bosses through the power of friendship. Thank you Bungie for a flawless system that meets everyone's needs and brings the entire Destiny community closer together! <3

Should give us more points if we get commendations from random blueberries more than friends fireteam. I'm sick of seeing fireteams give commendation each other but not give to players actually worked hard for the win in pvp especially in quick play.

To hit the maximum guardian rank you need to get 6000. If you think 750 is a lot for rank 7, you need 1250 for rank 8, and I believe it goes to 1750 for rank 9. It could be higher, but I won’t be rank 8 until after the weekly reset. For rank 8 you need to get platinum on a legend nightfall, and I’m not doing this stupid mars battleground for that triump.

I still can’t go into the commendation page without it freezing before it loads and I have to restart my game even after the “fix”

They just dont make sense. Someone with 5k commendations has farmed that amount in 1 day without helping anyone, compared to some veteran with 5 years experience that only get 100 recommendations. As always, Bungie makes it farmable/abusable again :) Its the opposite of what they wanted it to be….

I can't even access the commendations section of My Journey. Game freezes every time I try 🤷‍♂️

Personally I want to use them but if it's Crucible or Gambit there just isn't enough time to give them out. I started by looking for names or maybe the scores but there's not enough time. The timer MUST be longer for us to use them to any real value, otherwise it's just a gimmick we're all already tired of B. Anyone even play test this function at all? I can't believe a room full of testers would have signed off on this short -blam!- timer.

My Xbox is old as -blam!- and heavily used and my connection is not the greatest so I’ve been unable to give anyone commendations as it never loads. Pretty funny

Yeah I’m feeling the same way. Also annoying is in crucible/gambit you have 10 seconds to give commendations if it even loads. Usually I just spam them without really checking the scores since it’s on a different screen. So annoying.
