Haven't played since launch. Is it normal to be dying constantly in every PvE activity?

I have been playing Lightfall since it released, and I played Destiny 2 on launch. I have a handful of exotics, none of which are suggested to be used in any current meta builds. My supply of armor improvement materials is very limited, so I'm not going beyond 5 energy until I get armor with better base stats. From what I understand, I need to get some exotic shard from Xur's quest. That quest requires doing PvP or repeating Nightfall. I hate PvP, so I'm trying the Nightfall route. The boss fight is just frustrating. I live for maybe 5 seconds on average then get to stare at a respawn timer for 30 seconds. My teammates aren't dying as much as I am, or at least I think that is the case. That's just the pain of the past week. Getting gear in PvE events was painful since the events were scaled way above my 1600-1700 gear until I completed the legendary campaign. Getting through the legendary campaign seemed to be the answer, but even that was filled with banging my head against a wall until my team cheesed a couple of the encounters. Is the journey to being powerful supposed to be this painful? Is it just me? Does it get easier when I get fully geared up with masterworks, meta exotics, and a good build?

  • Yes you can die alot in PvE, that's why you use cover and armour mods to be the most optimal for the engagement

    • Short answer: Yes, the game is meant to be a pathway of mastery. This requires honing your skill while playing for better drops. As your skill improves in both game mechanic management, and build crafting, you can advance to higher level content. I very much enjoy the process

      • No. But bungo thinks it's OK.

      • no, bungie made everything under light, min 5 to max 25. splash damage still kills everything, framerate bug. just stay far away from everything and you should be fine, even 100 resil won't save you.

      • Try to unlock armor focusing at the helm for seasonal defiant engrams. Make sure to have the ghost mod that gives a minimum of 10 resilience on random rolls of armor. Upgrade armor that has a high resilience (most important stat after discipline) to 7 energy (especially if low on prisms, if not 8/9 energy, 10 only if crazy good stats and you can spare an ascendant shard). Shards are very hard to come by for new players unfortunately unless you're good at PvP, then trials can net you some, master/GMs are the ideal way to get some but probably out of reach for you, for now.... Don't waste any on exotic armor until you've got plenty, better to upgrade 3 legendaries instead of 1 exotic. Make sure you can get 90 and up resilience and it should help a bit, + slap on some elemental resistance mods (chest armor) depending on which enemy race/s you're facing... Good builds can make all the difference, especially those that increase survivability, so check out some builds online. Unfortunately, unless a warlock, strand isn't the best for survivability except with certain exotic armors and particular builds... Also, linear fusions got nerfed a bit, but are still the best option for picking of beefy targets from safer distances. This game is highly discouraging for new players who want to do harder content, takes time to build up an arsenal... For xurs exotic cypher quest, once you get one focus on exotic powerhouses first. e.g. Sleeper simulant is a beast, even if you don't see builds that include it online, it's simple, point and melt targets. Witherhoard and arbalest are other very important exotics to have, so try to get those asap. Lament as well for agressive builds. For special weapons, if not rocking Witherhoard, then fusion rifles do good damage and are easy to use. Good luck!

      • It's the recent, idiotic, changes to overall difficulty that make powering up a slog. Stick with it and farm up some gear and enhanced cores for upgrade cubes. You'll eventually get to a more workable power level.
