Hi all,
I wanted to create this topic to share some of what I've been troubleshooting over the last couple of days and some of the issues I've seen to hopefully help the devs and anyone else who is struggling with low performance with Destiny 2.
The Rig
In short, here are the specs for the machine I'm using to run Destiny 2
-Gigabyte Aorus Elite 570X MB
-32 GB RAM
-Ryzen 9 5900X
-EVGA RTX 3080 FTW
-1TB SSD NVMe
-Running on a 144hz monitor @ 1440p
The Issues
Since the launch of Lightfall, FPS has struggled to hit my historical marks my rig has routinely achieved. I utilize a 144hz monitor and pre WQ effectively stayed locked at 144 FPS the entire time. Post WQ I would see some fluctuation between 120-144 FPS, but never enough to be particularly concerned, running maximum settings. Since Lightfall has arrived, however, I've seen some instability. Neomuna in particular being the biggest culprit, where loading in alongside Nimbus would bring my frames down to 60-70. I initially didn't care too much about this as I had seen that others were seeing similar issue and figured that it was a game issue.
The issues get worse...
This is where things seemingly have taken a strange turn... It appears the more that I close and reopen the game, more problems begin to arise. Frames continue to drop even lower. Neomuna can get as bad as 40-45 frames and my game has (only once) crashed to Desktop. I have two close friends who run very similar rigs to mine and I questioned them about their experience and they reported to me that they are getting 20 frames or more over my average in every location.
Troubleshooting begins
I'm going to spare everyone the history behind each thing and why I tried them, but I am going to post a timeline and it's results and talk about it a little afterwards in summary. Quickly, I do want to mention my experience with error code Marmot and how I started down this path
Early into Lightfall I was receiving Marmot errors with a windows alert dialog (aka, not an in game error notice, rather the windows alert dialog box followed by game crash). Usually this forces me to Verify game files in steam before I can reload the game. In my experience the marmot error occurs when I'm attempting to fly to different destinations or heading to orbit after a ritual activity. When this happens, I noticed that my game operated better (or closer to expectation) right after this error and subsequent game verification. This lead me to try a variety of things to consistently get improvement (Spoiler alert: Absolutely nothing about this has been consistent). These Marmot errors happened 2-3 times during a long play session (sessions exceeding 6 hours). I also heard that the newest Nvidia Drivers had CPU spike issues where some recommended a rollback (A hotfix for the errant 531.18 has been posted here: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5450)
So this is what I tried in order:
-At Lightfall Launch, I was running 528.24. I attempted upgrading to the newest drivers (531.18) and my experience for the playsession did improve. Neomuna held over 70 Frames, but elsewhere, was into the 100+ frames.
--> After putting the machine to sleep and returning to the game later the next day, my experience worsened. Getting 45-60 frames in Neomuna and struggling to stay over 80 elsewhere.
-I updated my Bios and Chipset drivers, along with other relevant hardware. I performed Windows 10 Updates and am current in 22H2.
-After these updates, I noticed a roughly 10 FPS uptick in my averages.
-->I shut down the computer instead of sleeping it. Returning to the game worsened my experience similar to sleeping the machine above.
-Used Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to clean erase my Nvidia Drivers and installed the version my buddy with a similar rig was running (528.49).
-->My experience got even worse, averaging 50FPS across most of the game aside from menus and orbit where I would scratch 100s.
-Used DDU again and installed 528.24. Before launching the game, I uninstalled and reinstalled Destiny as well. After completion, launching the game resulted in the best results yet. Locking at 144 Frames in transit, triple digits in most locations aside from Neomuna (70-80s).
-->Put the computer to sleep overnight, and reloading the game after work (which brings us to today 3/7) resulted in bad performance again, now I can't seem to hold over 60 frames anywhere.
----> I've since tried upgrading my drivers with the newest hot fix (no change), clearing shader caches (nothing). I've lowered my in game settings to the absolute minimum and have only seen 5FPS gains on average, if that.
Prior to my attempting any troubleshooting, It seemed that rebooting my machine (complete shutdown and restart) would result in a significantly better experience in game, but starting the game again would result in erratic game performance afterwards. I've tried restarting my machine (without a complete shutdown) and I've had no luck getting back any improvement in performance. Additionally, I've loaded other games and am running at my expected 122-144 frames without hiccup. I loaded Apex Legends earlier and it ran flawlessly at max settings.
So I'm at a loss at this point, but I'm hoping that detailing the above troubleshooting can help encourage others who have tried similar to share their experiences or potentially tips. I am at least fortunate enough to continue to play the game, so it's not all terrible, but it does feel bad to have invested in this machine the way that I have to have such poor performance in this game that ran so well for so long, especially right before the raid race.
I'll continue to detail this thread with any other things that I try along the way. Thanks for reading this wall of text, and I hope someone, anyone can help.

1 ReplyI've been having similar issues ever since Wednesdays maintenance. Fps drops, horrible stutters, etc. I have an AMD gpu and have been guessing it's the shader caching issue but I haven't had a single issue since the first couple play sessions with the card. Idk what happened but it's horrible.

5 RepliesI have had FPS issues on an rtx series 30 mobile since November. Lots of people seem to have series 30 performance issues over last few months. Particularly mobile RTX 30. And it's worse in lightfall. I went through Nvidia support too. I get bad perf in destiny 2 and one other game (sniper elite5) but apex and fortnight run fine. Nvidia referred the issue to their third level dev, but they buried it. Anyway... why I'm posting is through trial and error I've found my main perf issues were introduced with version 5.26 of the Nvidia drivers. If I go back to 5.22.25 I get a marked increase in performance. Be interested to know if that version does anything for you? Yesterday I tried 5.31 to see if anything was fixed. Got 30 fps just walking around the farm. Downgraded the driver's again and the speed went back to normal. Neomuna is still a bit slow, but much less so.
