Bungie… Even Byf is upset about the story… Byf
What an absolute disaster. We need some sort of reassurance from Bungie’s that whatever the heck this was won’t be repeated narratively. I’m terrified for Destiny’s future if this was their best effort for a campaign about the Darkness/Witness

2 RepliesEdited by FINATRON1: 3/2/2023 12:33:51 PMIt doesn’t help that people are filling their copium tanks by saying that “all will be explained in final shape” I didn’t pay for a Final shape ad, Destiny’s whole model is built around creating questions and mysteries within it’s universe and then selling us the answers in DLC’s which often left us satisfied regardless of the DLC as a whole; Curse of Osiris: introduced Osiris Warmind: introduced Rasputin and Xol Shadowkeep: Finally gave us a look at a Pyramid ship These DLC’s were badly received but had far more satisfying payoffs than Lightfall which is immensely disappointing, we are only left with more questions and I think Byf and the community at large is right to be worried if this story is any longer in the right hands.

The veil and the radiant mast, two of the most blatant macguffins ever written that are never even attempted at being explained, leading us to an ending where [spoiler]You fight Calus, who was supposed to be one of the strongest beings in the whole narrative BEFORE being granted MORE power by the witness, and canonically kill him with more ease than you killed his robot in the raid. Youre telling me that robot canonically took 6 people to kill and the real one, after getting MORE power from the STRONGEST ENEMY IN THE UNIVERSE, is WEAKER? and in the ending cutscene... what happens? Theres not a single line of dialogue except "hes making the link". What does that mean? The witness controls our ghost and makes it fly up into the veil (we still have not been told what the veil is), a laser from space cuts a triangle in the traveler and shows pink stuff inside and thats... literally it. The story just ends! And then the NPCs in the tower are just like... whatever? Im sorry but that is objectively horrible and its worse when you look at it relative to witch queen. It was obviously scratched together lazily and carelessly.[/spoiler] 9 Years deep into this narrative. We have one big DLC left. and instead of clearing things up and rounding out the story the narrative team is making things more confusing. I have no choice but to believe the rumors based on leaks that the lightfall story was supposed to just be act 1 of the final shape story and it was split at the last minute are true because i have no clue how else this blunder could have happened.

I knew something was up when I asked my friend - who has played all the seasons and knows most of the lore - "What's the Veil?" They replied, "I have no idea." Of course I initially thought, hey this will be explained as we explore Neomuna, but it just wasn't. What rubs salt into the wounds more is the fact everyone seems to know what it is except us.

290 RepliesDisagree. Byf has his own very clear biases. He has little tolerance for slow-boil storytelling, and he prefers a very dark kind of storytelling that many people find exhausting. I’m about 2/3rd of the way through the campaign, and I think it is a well-paced storyline for one that is going to play out over the next two years. It strikes a reasonable balance between despair over facing a seeming unstoppable enemy, and hope that they can find a way to win. As for the writing? Not every character is supposed to be likeable. As IRL, some people are difficult or annoying. I appreciate Byf’s lore work, but he is not an authority in my eyes as to what is or isn’t a good story….

We lost…but we win? Literally 0 consequences. We should have let the witness in ages ago. All those people died and it turns out it didn’t matter! Nothing bad happened. 2023 story telling at its best. EVERYBODY IS A WINNER REGARDLESS!!! The Witness: “Dude! This thing you guys worship is my storage trailer! You know how long I’ve been trying to get my lazy-boy back??!”

The impact of what happened is almost completely erased by the fact that our supposed loss displays zero consequences. We still have the light. We still wield the light. It was left in such a massive open cliffhanger but with zero explanation or consequences so as to be unsatisfying and uncomfortable. There isn’t even any implied consequences or explanation in which we could be left in suspense about. It’s just “we lost” and we spent the whole time racing around for something that has been given no meaning to us while we just learned Strand instead. Which we also got no real explanation for why is suddenly a thing we can see and do. It’s such a bizarre thing that this happened. The only thing I can think of is that the first raid completion might trigger something or that the following seasonal stories will be a direct continuance of this. Which would be nice but I think it’s a bad way of going about this part of the story.

I’m not on Bungie’s payroll, so I can only make assumptions, however I do strongly believe that those who wrote Destiny, left the company without sharing the ending of this story. So Bungie was left… making up their own conclusion based on commercial requirements and the narrative they were given. And that’s where it fails. Let me expand. Whether we are into books, mangas, series, you name it, many authors, when asked about their thought process, often explain how they have an ending/conclusion/moral in mind, a place they want to bring us to, and then build a whole story to how they/we actually got there. What I’m saying is that the ending is not always written first, but is very often the clearest thing in their mind. They (often) write backward. As far as they can. With a protagonist that they try to construct and make sure we get to sympathize with not just to justify an ending, but for how destiny brought him to that final realization, often at its expense, in a pseudo Freudian/Kantian approach. So my hypothesis is that Bungie didn’t really know where and how to end it, and believed that this story could end as new Star Wars are written, with a vague concept of evil, and a perpetual Shakespearean like tragedy as ending that is overlooked thanks to CGIs. Add political and commercial needs such as inclusiveness, USP (strand), incentive to buy the whole annual content, and you get a flavorless mix of all as kickstart. I really do hope this will develop in a way that we don’t all feel like: ok, so that’s it?

2 RepliesThere was so much in the campaign that just wasn’t explained and nothing was really surprising. And the end result could have easily been avoided and ONLY happened because that’s where they wanted to take the story. They tried to make this Infinity War. But things are still business as usual. Seriously Nimbus could fly on his super fast space board after the slowly drifting ghost at ANY moment but they had to make sure that the bad thing happened. What’s the bad thing? Hell if I know. Bad guy wants to do it so we need to stop it. Only explanation They’re gonna have to spend the whole next year retconning to salvage anything from this mess

When Byf, who normally is very tolerant of Bungie's flaws, always trying to see the positive side, is completely frustrated and irritated with this expansion, it really shows how badly Bungie screwed up. 8 RepliesThe main problem is we have a villain where we don't know really what they want. We have the traveller, which we really don't know what it is or wants There was no reason the witness needed Calus Cloudstriders make no sense. They are augmented to the point of God's but can only live 10 years? You'd think since they are so scientifically advanced they'd have a higher life expectancy. The main campaign was just a Strand tutorial with extra steps. Using strand in most all the encounters put you at a disadvantage as well.
