ADHD Making it Harder to Properly Enjoy the Game

I know I'm definitely not the only person who plays Destiny that has ADHD, but I might be alone on this opinion. Basically put, the game is too repetitive. The activity streak multiplier has 5 nodes. I can barely stomach 3 consecutive gambit matches. Strikes are WAY too easy with 3 people, leaving me bored after 1 or 2. PvP is usually fine, but this season it's miserable and I am having a hard time enjoying it and have to leave after 2 or 3 matches. I then look at the rest of the game's requirements. Too many times the game just expects players to grind an activity 50+ times a season, or 50+ time within a few weeks. I try to solo dungeons, but bosses end up taking significantly more than 3 damage phases, even if I spec my hardest into dps. At that point it just becomes a repetitive slog and isn't fun. Time is an economic resource in video games and it's inflated far too much in this game. The game I fell in love with way back then had a much smaller "checklist" of things to do. I could get on, jump around from activity to activity, play until I got bored, and then leave with everything "checked off" of the list. Nowadays, it's like the game expects players to do the same monotonous thing over and over and over again in order to make any sort of progress, which is really hard to do with ADHD. It's hard for me to get the most out of the rep streak multiplier. I can't enjoy solo'ing dungeons. It's becoming super rare for me to find that moment of true fun that I'm actually having a great time. The game has become a chore. Where I used to be able to get on for fun and just jump around, doing all my weekly checklist, now I spend the same time and energy and merely make progress towards completing the checklist for smaller rewards. Good analogy of the game is like it used to feel like a fun job making $17/hour for 5 hours a day, but now it feels like I'm working a monotonous job making $7/hour for 8 hours a day with fewer benefits.

  • Yeah. I'm gonna be real to you from 1 person with ADHD to the other person with ADHD. I only read your title and have formed a piece of crucial advice for you : Quit playing or play it so that it's still fun for you. Another piece of mind blowing information for you : You're not being forced to do anything. It's a game. I've been having fun with other games. Currently playing Mass Effect 1 through 3 again. And who cares. Why pull the ADHD card. Everyone suffers when they're forcing themselves to do things they don't want to in a game. Simply don't do them and shut up about it. That's universal knowledge, regardless of condition, gender, age. It's universal. But I'm guessing this isn't the only place you're holding up that ADHD card. Good for you buddy. March the frontlines.

  • I understand your dilemma, however that is the nature of this game, you need to look at other games to fill the gap

  • Get the gear you want at the moment and then take a nice break from the game. Play some other games that interest you for a while

  • All these people complaining about the gameplay loop, I have to ask have you ever played an mmo rpg before. This is standard practice and compared to some its rather generous with its loot. This game is meant to be played over 1000s of hours not 10. If you don't like it play another game more suited to your needs, I actually encourage this, why would you play something you don't enjoy. To those who say the game was diferent years ago are just wrong, we have been playing the same loop for nearly a decade. Maybe your not up for that and me personally think the game should be more hard core. I enjoy games that are done in 10 hours to, but that's why I love destiny there's always something to grind for or something new to do.

    • I totally second that, and I have no ADHD. The thing is, Bungie does not care. Look at the season. It is all recycled, being a mix of Warmind and season of the Worthy. Even one out of two "new" dungeon bosses is copied 1:1 from GoS. It is capitalism at is best, maximization of profits. Selling stuff multiple times with low effort. No secrets anymore due to datamining? Big BS! Missions like Whisper or Zero Hour are expensive and do not create any additional income, unless they would sell it separately (and then it won't be a secret anymore).

      • Turn down your TV volume and put on YouTube on your phone. It helps the monotony of grinding, as an ADHD person.

No, don’t use ADHD as a crutch to push blame and avoid your personal shortcomings.

You aren't allow hell I can't tell you how many issues I have even while in this game but its not Bungie's fault yet its not your fault either. This game was more simple when Bungie had three other company's helping them (This includes their own Halo games) now since Bungie tried being on their own, failing, and than being bought by another company twice it shows that Bungie clearly has no idea what made their game great. I have Mood Swings but not majorly while playing D2, and I have ADHD so I get lost while doing Raid (Yet I try my best when paying attention) Including doing stuff Solo when my brain decides to do its own thing. People like us play these games to possibly get better with these issues so I can completely understand how you feel. Yet Bungie made their game this way to allow you to play it in anyway you want but what they failed at was making sure you could do what you want by making you grind for what you want its how most MMO games are. (Yes I know Destiny isn't an MMO, and its shown in its game page but Bungie has said before this game is suppose to be an Action MMO so people are gonna treat it as one) So its okay you don't feel like the game isn't for you just enjoy what you can, and than move on to the next game you enjoy or if you have a group of friend its best to see what they want to play. Your not alone cheers to you mate.

        • ADHD is one of those diagnoses that anyone can get. The guy who coined/invented it has long since apologized for it being bad science. I was diagnosed in the 90s. My students are diagnosed today. It’s a catch all for people that have trouble focusing. Likely has more to do with gaming and your brain being trained to expect constant stimulation.

        • OP: a good and thoughtful post; you’re not alone feeling bored and/or overwhelmed with mindless and repetitive chores to be done in the current game. Lots of players express such frustrations. In D1Y1, there was a buzz to hook up with an equally eager bunch of m8s to loot the gorgon chests, then ‘reset’, then get the flaming hairdo, then knock out the NF, then go do the Raid - and if any energy left, off to the Crucible. That’s what we did, week in and week out…until BHQ hit us with ‘Sunset’…and then everything changed… Don’t get me wrong, D1 had its fair share of flaws, and frustrations, which where annoying as eff…but it also had that ‘space magic’ thing, in spades! But, that all began to evaporate after the ‘Sunset’ debacle…and things just got progressively worse thereafter. FWIW: I left Destiny after they nerfed ToM to dust; I was a bubble T with ToM and was very busy helping lots of players complete the triumph to drop Oryx; it was a thing, then… Anyhoo, I’d had enough of the BHQ bs, so, off I went…to give WarFrame a go! I spent a good while playing WF…played as a ‘whale’…had lots of ‘fun’…built my own dojo…constructed my own Railjack…and then had enough of WF as things became a bit of a chore there too… Lots of players in Destiny have also dabbled in WF…and vice versa. I dare say many popular games out there have their own unique‘boredom’ threshold, it’s par for the course. That said, with so many games available to try out, it’s worth getting off the Destiny hamster wheel to go find something else new to play, which will relieve the issues mentioned in your post. You could also load into D1 - lots of players do that, too! You could also give WF a go - lots of Guardians do! Whatever you decide, ease springs…take it easy…and remember - change is as good as a rest! Cheers! 🫡

          • Look. After playing this game since D1 I'm at the point I mostly play pvp only when I'm drinking. And that makes things difficult too. Got my mic muted for a week after cussing out people. But that's what it is man. You can't ask for favors. This is a prison, not a game.

            • I am ready to announce the new Senior VP of Community Managers. He’s sitting right in these forums. It’s me! I will be breaking down the wall in the corner Bellevue office to create one gigantic office and I will only be taking 85% of the additional salary owed to me. That’s self sacrifice, people.

            • You don't have to have ADHD to feel this way. This is the way I'd say the majority of players feel, ADHD or not. This game went downhill when they started incorporating an mmo vision into it. Bungie does not know how to make a proper mmo when it comes to available content and the kind of content, as well as the kind of grinding that players actually enjoy.

Destiny 2 needs a complete refresh it’s the same thing over and over to the point every activity feels the same Bungie needs to shake things up Maybe add new stuff like strike exclusive gear , maybe new activities like apartments and apartment decorating Maybe achievements you can put in there or souvenirs from the field Maybe a ship mod shop with paint jobs Sparrow racing A sparrow garage to build and design custom sparrows Idk just new stuff and expansions on what we have Game needs more depth and fun stuff to do , explore and find instead of mindless grinding I wouldn’t mind a thing where we can buy a entire city and run it build it expand it interact with it , live in it etc Could even be a clan / alliance thing Idk I just need more stuff to do to immerse in the world and lore more more day to day stuff
