No it's not you. Bungie has a new universal wipe mechanic - if you don't complete whatever activity you're doing within a randomly generated amount of time you will kicked to the start menu... This is in direct response to guardians wanting more difficult content. Hell, I just completed the exotic quest solo-flawless. Grabbed the final chest, claimed 3 triumphs, and returned to orbit. Was immediately met with a weasel and when I returned the 3 triumphs I claimed were locked again. Went back to do it again and was weaseled during the space walk. That's what brought me here myself.

Bungie needs to fix this problem or outright get rid of exotic quest or offer the catalyst to older players

It has definitely been bugged since about last reset to make it absurd, but I am not aware of it happening since the summer? If you are experiencing it for that long, I think there might be a problem with your local network, that just looks extra bad now. I would double check your router isn't blocking any random ports, as that might be causing some of your instability and make sure your platform (PC or Console) is wired rather then WiFi. I would probably wait to troubleshoot though till the new year, as Bungie is a skeleton crew till the New Year.
