This needs to be fixed.
Before you yell at me, what I'm talking about is the fact that when, for instance, you get a 3 tap with a handcannon that has explosive payload, the killing shot counts as "non-precsion" or a body shot. The explosive part of the shot counts as the kill, because the crit part of the shot did not quite eliminate the target. If the target is very, very weak, then the crit part of the shot will kill, making only those very rare situations a precision kill.
I am simply asking for Bungie to make the whole shot, both explosive and normal bullet, to be the same. If you hit the body, the explosive counts as a NON-PRECISION hit. If the shot goes to the head, both the bullet and explosive payload will count towards PRECISION damage. Does that make sense?
Feedback appreciated. Thanks for readin' fellas.

11 RepliesAs someone with 16,000 kills on my Fatebringer with Firefly and Explosive, I can confirm. The explosive damage numbers cause the game to consider it not a headshot even though it is, and Firefly then doesn't proc. Example: yellow number is 2,366 then 2 white numbers of 1,799. It considers the white number from the explosive, and decides it was a body shot, when the yellow wouldn't be there if it actually was. I find the only way to counter this is to perfectly dead center the shot. If you hit in the very center of the head it seems to be more reliable, though this glitch is very complicated AND ANNOYING.

This has always been the case, even in D1. That's why you switch weapons when you need precision kills.
-
It would be nice
-
1 ReplyExplosive Payload has always performed this way despite calls for change in the past. I don’t see Bungie changing it
-
The unfortunate part is, explosive damage cannot crit naturally. It may get a “crit” or the yellow numbers when using a debuff, but they made it not be able to achieve a crit. It would be a bit ludacris given it would increase the multiplier for the explosive damage and it would end up being a must have damage perk.
-
A unique interaction where only 2 bows ever got it (that I remember) explosive head/dragonfly which was a neat combination but proved generally useless because same thing, headshot, but explosive head gets kill, no dragonfly.
-
I remember explosive payload causing me a lot of issues back when you need 200 precision kills with a hand cannon for the Luna's howl quest, the explosion would kill them so to this day I've been hesitant to use EP even though I know it's good, would be nice if they could adjust it but for now just don't use EP if you're going for precision kills
-
Nope. EP is fine

7 RepliesI have felt this way since Year 1 of D1 with Fatebringer. I used to never run Explosive Rounds because it would ruin the effects of Outlaw and Firefly, completely ruining the strength of the weapon. It’s annoyed me ever since.
-
1 ReplyIt’s not broken. The explosive portion is cleaning up the kills in those instances where it’s not proc’ing your rapid hit/outlaw/insert crit reliant perk here. The trade off to infinite range for half your damage is that it can’t hit crits.

Edited by xbroggiex: 11/25/2022 3:39:51 PMTrade off for not being able to reliably proc headshot kill perks is a 10% increase in damage and more range.
-
It's always been the case I feel. Don't expect them to fix it now.
-
This needs to be fixed? It works exactly as it's intended to work. It's not broken to require a fix. It's an area of effect damage perk which does exactly as what's described for the perk. Do rockets and grenades also need to be fixed to do precision damage?

It's not broken.

On my Bottom Dollar it is good for flinching enemies..

Works as intended, nothing to fix.

It's been like this since launch. I don't think Bungie will "fix" it at all. Not saying it shouldn't be, just don't think they ever will.
-
So your asking for "Smart Bullets" pretty much they explode as normal but when hitting a target with a "kill shot" they Do not explode and do the default Damage. I'm with you because I have a lot of scouts with this and hate I can't get Precision kills.
-
Not a priority. EP is already one of the strongest perks in the game for both PvE and PvP. It now predominantly drops in the 4th column, so the only perks this interaction normally conflicts with are Outlaw and encore (but only the range part you don’t really need much anyways). There are more conflicts if the perk drops in the 3rd column itself, but I still think it’s amazing there as it’s a range perk, 2x flinch modifier, and a damage perk all rolled into one and can often stack with other top options. So yeah, EP’s strong enough as it is that this isn’t something immediately needed

3 RepliesIf you're using explosive payload on something that requires precision kills, that's your own mistake. There's nothing to fix there

1 ReplyI agree. I have a Apostate Arc Sniper with Explosive rounds I love, however it never counts as a "Precision" kill. I should have completed the "Control" for the DeadEye Triumph medal multiple times in Crucible, but the Explosive Payload doesn't count.
-
1 ReplyThat's one of the big reasons I don't like EP. It just feels so uncrisp to hit a 3 tap but have it show up as a body shot kill in the feed. Also some perks are built around getting precision kills like On Your Mark and outlaw.
-
It’s been like this since D1. It’s wild they haven’t changed it. Maybe it’s intended

Edited by pcln3806: 11/24/2022 6:52:11 PMI get not liking that quirk of explosive since there are so many damn perks that need headshot kills but I think explosive is fine atm (at least for scouts). I like explosive because it closes the gap between headshot damage and body shot damage while being an overall damage increase Unless what your asking is just for the explosive damage to count as whatever the impact damage was, and to not for it to also scale with headshot damage. I think that would be a good change
