If you could have anything in PvP…

Hi! Hippy here! We’ve said a few times that the team has been heads down on overhauling PvP gradually (and that we are comfy quite yet saying the more distant plans while the team test some things out) for the future and that we know it can be frustrating to not see that. Still can’t talk about it and I’m hoping me posting this on a Sunday helps show that this isn’t a work question, per se, but more of an interest and let’s talk type thing, but wanted to chat! If you could dream up anything for PvP; returning, new, “what the hell does that mean,” what would that be and why? Olive branch here to try to be more active on the forums, please be kind 🙏🏻

  • Ah another one. I know I will be hated for that. But as an average player, loose sbmm feels way better for me. I hope it sticks somehow while I know ppl on the higher extreme gets the bad end of the stick though. Maybe a cbmm day could happen once in a while so that even they can relax, or a playlist option?

Heya Hippy, Love the energy, I'd say map voting in playlists, and a way to have PvP tournaments, with some kind of temporary end tournament ranking. You know, a bit like what they do with rocket league tournaments. Depending on how well you did, you would get some loot and what not. Otherwise, that's personal but I like a lot smaller pvp events focused on teamplay like what happened in the iron banner lately. I don't know if ppl like it in Iron Banner but I hope they continue wherever they happen. Cheers,

  • Whatever you do, please try to consider the exploitation of certain things. The more attainable things you have available at every skill level the better the population will be and the more consistent the population will be. You won’t have to put up silos like a flawless pool in the middle of the weekend. Allowing more exploitation before and after it starts. 1 example that would of helped is give 1 adept weapon but not flawless a season after winning 25 matches or something like that. That would of still kept the population up yet allowed those who want to farm for their god roll enough fodder over time. Just things like that to help keep the population healthy and keep the exploitation away

  • Make reporting players mean something. Instead of multiple issue selections maybe a simple temporarily not play with or against that player with reason. Casual and new light players need a way to improve. Everyone has their preferences on method but please keep the goal to have competition and not one sided matches. Freelance against freelance and not against teams. This seems to happen way too often.

For me I'd like to see: 1.tighter special ammo economy. I'd suggest either special ammo boxes or for special ammo to drop as a consumable which you restock through kills with kinetic ammo. So to regain special you need primary kills. I feel like Either type would make it a tactical decision on when to use special instead of using them as a main weapon. 2.lobby balancing. I think there are far too many games that are decided before they start because all of the best players are on the same team 3.rewards for pvp. There needs to be a rewards path for standard pvp. Although you can get some stuff from shaxx and drops most of them are just straight delete items. 4.Trials: Adept rewards for 7 wins. Even if its just 1 per week. 7 wins per week in trials is difficult enough to earn an adept reward. You could even limit it to one per player who didn't earn flawless by making rerolls etc only available at the lighthouse if you like. 5.dedicated servers if at all possible 6.dodge. This one isn't specifically for pvp I guess. I'd like the dodge to not be a class ability but instead a movement. All classes should be able to dodge in their own way. For those who would argue that its the hunter's ability etc. Their class ability should be based around their invisibility/stealth And anyway They'd still have a dodge. Any or all of those would be amazing. Thank you for asking 😁

    • My thoughts from a 3.0KD player who genuinely cares about the game and the casual player experience: Destiny 2 PvP is a game with such unrealized potential. It has the potential to be great and engaging for everyone as well as be one of the biggest FPS games on the market, but it falls short on a few points, those are; 1) Lack of a ranked playlist with an in game leaderboard, ranking system, ranked rewards, and ranked rule set. 2) Lack of engaging content for beginner - mid tier players such as; new game modes (some casual some normal), better custom games, and community events. 3) Removal of fast paced moment, which is the core of Destiny 2 PvP. I’m gonna take time to touch on all three points so this may get a bit long. 1) Let’s start with the lack of a ranked playlist. At first you would believe this is something that can only benefit hardcore players but that’s not the case. Having a ranked playlist will definitely be more attractive to higher skill players and will draw them away from casual game modes (like control) solving the current SBMM debate. You see the reason casual game modes feel so sweaty is because the entire player base is left playing a handful of game modes during the week when Trials of Osiris is gone. This is turn artificially bumps of the average skill level of players during the week. Having a ranked playlist, that has its own separate rules (banned weapons, subclasses, etc) as well as an in game ladder and ranked rewards will draw the majority of higher skill players to that playlist. It’s also sustainable content because with every rank reset and ladder reset players will play again just to grind the ranked ladder, even if there is a lack of “new” content. In short, a ranked playlist will help alleviate causal game modes feeling sweaty and give higher skilled players an endless amount of content. 2) Now let’s talk about the lack of engaging content for beginner - mid tier players. This part is extremely important because it goes hand in hand with the ranked playlist I just talked about. Casual players NEED casual content that is not only rewarding it has to be FUN. Coming from Bungie, the company that made Halo which is renowned for its customs games it’s shocking to see the lack of spark Destiny 2 doesn’t seem to have. Custom games need a complete reimagining. We should be able to modify our speed, weight, ammo count, weapon load outs, and everything else. Custom games should have a PLETHORA of options with the ability to save a preset or load a custom one. This creates basically an infinite amount of free content because the player base can create their own fun/game modes. This alone is the biggest reason Halo was so successful: the custom games. Along side customs games getting revamped there needs to be more official game modes for casual players to enjoy. We currently have Control (6v6 Kill mode), Elimination (3v3 Kill mode), Survival (3v3 Kill mode), Rumble (1v1 Kill mode), ToO (3v3 Kill mode), and the random rotation playlist. There’s no variation in gameplay right now, or at least a tiny amount at best. Why don’t we have capture the flag? Why don’t we have oddball? Why don’t we have countdown? These game modes add variety to the stale playlist we currently have. They add more life to PvP by breaking up the monotony of doing the same thing day in and day out. However there’s no reason to stop here, why don’t we have fun game modes? There’s no manhunt, grief ball, infection, and the list goes on. Adding in these game modes will drastically increase player retention and allow not only casual players but all players to enjoy Destiny 2 PvP in a fun way rather than competitive way. Something that is incredibly important and seems to be missing right now. 3) The last thing I wanna talk about is the movement inside of Destiny 2. Let me start it by saying I have played many FPS games at a high level. I was global elite in CSGO, I was a high ranked doubles player in Halo 3 through Halo Reach in the MLG circuit, I was top 0.1% in the COD MLG circuit, and I’m currently a top 0.1% player in Destiny 2. I’m not saying this as an ego display, I’m saying this to show you my credentials so you believe me when I say I KNOW what makes a game unique. I love Destiny 2 PvP so much and despite all of its short comings and, let’s be honest, the rocky state it’s been in for a while, I continue to play Destiny 2 over other games… why? Because Destiny 2 is the most unique FPS game on the entire market and no other FPS game comes CLOSE to it. What makes it unique? The movement. People always praise Destiny 2 for its gun play and I wanna take a moment and call BS on that statement or rather the idea that stamens presents. People say that as if every other FPS game on the markets doesn’t have good gun play. It’s not true, COD has good gun play, Halo has good gun play, OW does, Apex does, hell even FORTNITE has good gun play. However, none of those games have movement like Destiny 2. Movement is what makes Destiny 2 so amazing, fun, and unique. It’s what stands out and attracts new players and keeps old players like me playing. Don’t believe me? Go on youtube right now and type in Destiny 2 PvP movement and look at the disgusting amount of videos and guides. However, despite this, in recent seasons we’ve seen a push to take away from movement (AE changes / Slide nerf) and I’m confused as to why? Without the fast paced gameplay and movement Destiny 2 turns into another generic shooter, and not a good one at that, so why are these changes going through? I would love to see a return to the old style of Destiny 2 game play. Fast and aggressive, not slow and stale. Please consider removing these changes. I could talk about this game all day, I love it, it’s my passion. If anyone at Bungie ever wants to speak to me directly just reach out. Sorry if this went on to long, I just care deeply about this game. Hope everything I said along side everyone else gets taken into consideration.

      • I really do appreciate the attempt to reach out to us and allow discussion on this topic. It's a delicate sandbox, being a PvE-first game. But there is a good amount of improvement to be had before giving in to the game's inherent limitations. To keep things concise: 1) A non-ability enabled mode for PvP, focused on gunplay and movement. 2) Better loot for Survival. 3) Better access to a larger variety of "fun" gamemodes. Perhaps changing the weekly rotating playlist to a daily rotation instead. Laser Tag and Vehicle-enabled PvP is a stretch but a man can dream :) 4) SBMM is controversial as ever, and I do have my problems with it. But it is a necessary evil, and I don't mind its existence. 5) Improve melee hitreg. Please. 6) Map voting for people who stay in 6v6 lobbies. For Trials Specifically : 1) Permanently active Freelance Trials. 2) Putting card-resetters into the Flawless Pool after a certain number of consecutive wins and resets. Actively farming lower-skill people should be disincentivized. 2a) Alternatively, we might do away with the Flawless Pool entirely, instead opting for weekly win-based matchmaking. A person with 100 match wins in a week still should not be matching with a fresh and shiny card. PvP is not currently in the best state, but I do hope that can be taken as an opportunity to move forward in a more community-centric direction.

      • -barebones game mode: no (offensive?) abilities, special ammo, or heavy ammo -Permanent freelance trials -Iron Banner more frequently per season -Gun game mode: cycle through random rolls of weapons, maybe curated rolls? OR cycle through exotic guns -A bit lofty, but hear me out: a drifter centric PvPvE mode. I remember the Survival mode from The Division 1 being my favorite spin on a battle royale(-ish) format. In practice, drifter takes guardians beyond our heliopause to scavenge worlds uncharted by the vanguard. Start out guardians with grey or green armor/guns, progressively increase gear rarity by timer or by powerful combatants guardians being defeated. Like the division, guardians can choose freely whether to shoot, or cooperate with each other. Average activity length of 20-30 min?

Edit: In response to another person suggesting it, I would second the idea of making Iron Banner more than just twice a season thing. Chasing the Title or gilding it hurts to begin because it feels like "if I don't set my nose to this grindstone for the week it's around and only it, I won't accomplish what I want," (for reference, I unlocked the title in the season of release and I have a severe animosity towards the thought of ever touching Rift again as a result) but if you miss one of the two weeks due to life issues or simply playing other games, it makes it that much worse. Even just one more slot in rotation would alleviate it just a bit. And since you are >technically< against other players in it.. Sparrow Racing League (sorry, not sorry). I feel like Trials could also be in a better spot, some ideas in here seem nice, others don't (all I know is being at the lowest population and the fact people who invested more hours into the game/are better at it are more likely to stick around makes Trials very painful during low population times/lulls in the seasons). There a lot of things I would love for PvP but if I had to pick one... I would say outside of weapon focusing that doesn't cost a blood sacrifice and an alimony's worth of materials, a good step forward and what I would pick for both PvE and PvP would be better mod availability to new lights (maybe make a certain, widely hated vendor offer 10 mods at a time, have 8 per week be sequential and then 2 that are complete random but not in the previous 8 to be sold at a highly discounted rate for people who rather wait it out... or better yet, a system that doesn't require time-gating sensitive mods for PvP or PvE that greatly help - think unflinching, targetting, loaders/dexterity mods, well of tenacity, reaping wellmaker, font of might, etc) or PvP modes that don't require highly/fully upgraded armor with the appropriate mods to be "optimal" (think of a barebones type of mode where all armor mods are disabled or some such, classes can still have abilities but they're set to base cooldowns with no armor mod support and all characters have 10 resil in terms of health only to prevent one shot shenanigans until the kinks could be ironed out at least, idk just spitballing). The reason I suggest this is because I recently (re)made a Titan and Warlock and tried to fight in Crucible on them for my weekly pinnacles. While I did okay, especially since they're not my main (yes, I'm a dirty Hunter), it was drastically more of an uphill battle due to not having the space to put on unflinching mods, loaders, dexterity mods or any of the sort.

      • I’d love to see more social gametype modes like in the old days of Halo. They were fun but also competitive and really drew me in to a PvP environment when I typically prefer PvE. Team Scorched and Mayhem are great (and my favorite times to play PvP), but here’s a list of some other ideas I’ve always thought could be fun: 1. Laser Tag (similar to Team Scorched but all players have harpy eye lasers) 2. Sword Slayer (similar to Team Scorched but all players have hive swords) 3. Sparrow Racing (still miss it 😢) 4. Vehicular Guardianslaughter (bring back the big maps with turrets, and large-scale vehicle combat, pikes, tanks, etc.) 5. Taken (would require a whole new gametype but works like Halo infection, one player is “infected” with a Taken glow, a hive sword, no shields or radar but really fast, all other players are normal loadouts - as the Taken player kills other guardians they become taken until the last player standing is killed or time limit is reached - ammo economy for the survivors would be limited) 6. Pike Wars (all pikes with no weapons on a precarious map, the goal is to destroy the other pikes or other teams of pikes through ramming, and side dodging trickery to get them to destroy themselves, this idea is inspired from Sumo in GTA) 7. Hide N Seek (all players are invisible on a small but “crowded” map except for one player who is the “hunter” - hunter has a hive sword, other players are unarmed. Player goal is to survive the time limit, Hunter goal is to find all the players and kill them. Would be a short round based game mode to encourage people killed early on to stay. Points accumulated for kills or time spent staying alive) Overall I could go on but you get the point. I’d love to play more PvP with these fun styled social games. That’s where Destiny is most enjoyable for me in the PvP realm. Appreciate you guys posting and listening on the forums!

New maps with gravity lifts and portals like the ones in gambit. The new throne world map was a decent start but needed more cover on one side of the map instead of open terrain Make pinnacles farmable Give warlocks and titans a way of going invisible in pvp for example after 3 kills in a row use emote button to go invisible for 7 secs which is removed soon as they shoot would prob stop all the people crying nerf invis all time Sbmm was a step in the right direction shame it wasn't recieved aswell as it should have been And freelance for all pvp ,solo players shouldn't be matched against teams fair enough waiting times will be longer but that's why it's an option

Complete seperation of sandboxes. I hate the fact that exotic creativity is limited because the PvP sandbox is based off of the PvE lootpool. Guns like invective or icebreaker would be godsends in the PvE sandbox, but would break the PvP ammo economy. So much potential that I KNOW the team has, but it completely squashed.

Keep SBMM despite the naysayers wanting easy wins, add ammo juggler to curb special weapon usage, replace Control with Zone Control, and add more objective based modes.

            • I'll bite. Probably just bullet point a list out kinda in order from most to least, and I'm not gonna include balance stuff: - More maps and returning the good ones that were taken out with BL is kind of a given. - Remove Quitter penalty from Casual/Quickplay - Give us a comprehensive map and mode filter, so say, for 6s we could choose what modes on what maps we want, IE Clash/Control/Supremacy on xyz maps, Clash only on some maps, take other maps out of our pools. Let's us have many options available at once without splitting people up by playlist. Would also allow for things like Rift or Zone Control to be permanently active. - I'd like to see Skirmish make a comeback, maybe be permanent in place of non-Trials Elim. - Iron Banner going back to 3 times per season - Trials I could write a gospel about how I'd rework it, but to cut down on words, remove Flawless Pool, tie Adept guns to 7 wins and beyond. Keep Lighthouse to Flawless and keep those cool cosmetics and the glows to it. Also have more Adept loot drop from Lighthouse chest, maybe the weekly gun and one random Adept gun. IDK. - Okay, one balance change, even though I doubt you're in that department, let alone reading this. Can we please just make AE only hit one cone? Having it hit both makes it feel way worse than it used to/should.
