Stop backing me out of menus

Bungie. For the love of god I haven’t played a single other game that forces me out of menus just for loading into a new space. It is basically impossible to report people at the end of matches. No wonder people turn to pinging all the CMs on twitter rather than use the report feature.

  • It's so hilarious how fanboys defend Bungie on this issue. How deluded one must be not to understand that this is a massive embarrassment and a clear sign of how awful, how unprofessional their code is?

We can navigate our entire inventory menu during loading screens, something that doesn’t exist in any other game I’ve played, at the small cost of being booted out just before we load into the activity. What’s the problem?

      • Keep backing us out of menus so we don't lose gear from game and server state changes.

      • Preach! Also, how about only locking gear once I've landed? Nothing more annoying than trying to make a last second change and getting locked out, going back to orbit immediately and then reloading activity.

      • Since you kids don’t seem to understand why this happens, Bungie should just prohibit players from opening the menu while loading in. That way, you don’t have to worry about being kicked out of your menu since you can’t open your menu in the first place.

In 8 years, this is the only thing I have ever complained about in the entire franchise. It still drives me nuts to this day! I understand why it does it, but it could at least remember where you were.

          • The best and worst thing that has happened to you issue. As others have mentioned, most games don't let you into menus while loading... It would be nice, yes. But the annoying aspect of being kicked out of menus is the better option here IMO.

            • Agreed. If the issue is that you shouldn't interact with certain elements for a solit second, then disable these elements momentarily instead. This is especially hurting as it can be triggers up to 4 times at the end of an activity if you keep trying entering said menu and the game keeps backing you off at each transitions, and because menu items loading can be slow, especially on console and on the tower where is loading other characters assets.

For the issue of reporting players, I would like to see a recent players tab, so that you can report from there. However, pulling people from their menus makes so they aren't AFK at the start of an activity. It would be too easy to go into menus, and lose track of time, and end up staying in menu at the start of an activity. For most activities, it probably wouldn't matter much. Being a man down in vanguard ops would be a mild inconvenience for the other 2. For quickplay or gambit, it puts the team of the player that is AFK at a disadvantage until they get out of their menu, but losing doesn't matter much (except for win streaks). For comp or trials, you absolutely have to pull people out of menus, as being AFK does hurt your team. I don't know if the reason for pulling people from menus is a technical issue or to make sure you aren't AFK at the start of an activity, but I agree with the reporting issue. There should be a better way to report people during a transition between activities, such as a recent players tab.

            • You have a valid point on the time being available to report a player (Especially on console) as it's often the case that the game will transition before you complete the report. If you had made your post title more like "Difficult to report players due to menu closing" I suspect many of the replies below would have had no reason to exist. :)

              • The other hand is due to spaghetti code from D1, the issue is that if they DIDNT, there's a chance that you'd legitimately LOSE YOUR WEAPONS if something hiccuped at the wrong point in a transition. So they force you out as a lesser of two evils.

                  • True. But those games you mentionned do not allow you to navigate in all of your menus/ inventory etc.. during loading. Did you ever noticed you never have true loading screens where you just look at a pic, a loading bar and a useless advice ? If they remove you from your inventory for a second its becaise you are switching servers basically, meaning that if you manage to switch something during this time...you may lose it forever. So i guess they could allow you to do it...but dont come here complaining if you lose an item x) Ik its frustrating but its a good compromise tbh. I prefer being kicked out of my inventory for a few seconds than having to wait during loading screens for 2minutes

                      • This is the only game that you can access your menu while loading. Not even Destiny 1 had that. While it is a little annoying I would rather have it kick me out of the menu then lose something cause I moved something at the wrong time

                          • Hey little buddy. You’re newer to this game so. This has been addressed numerous times. When you enter a new instance… loading into and out of servers you’re refreshed. Kicked out of your menu. If you haven’t figured out how or when this occurs the fault is on you.

Got it. One big black loading screen moving forward. Lol I mean, you can't complain about being kicked out of a menu/character screen, if you're not even in one when the game is loading, right? .....right? /s
Idk. I remember years ago, reasons given were something technical. Mentions of not losing items when loading, were there, but this was during the D1 times. But I also can only recall mentions of trying to prevent loading slowdowns during D2, not necessarily something to try and change it out right. This would have been mentioned during the occasional TWAB or a patch note. Wasn't ever a frequent topic. So that gives me the impression, the ancient engine holds something over this. Regardless of times being "different" now.
On the topic of reporting players, sure, that could be looked at as reason to adjust a few things. But that would also need a solution that doesn't enable player harassment. Pretty sure PlayStation and Xbox have a "recently played with" section for other users on the same platform, so perhaps Bungie needs something like that in their system. Maybe. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

                            • I get the feeling it may actually be something they can't avoid, or is part of a work around for a problem somewhere we don't know about. The consistency of it. Always up exactly one menu level. Doesn't kick you out of menus entirely, but one specific, not two, not three, not all the way out, exactly one level up. If it were a feature they'd just kick you out to main screen when you hit the ground..... The way that this specific "bug" works.... I think it's intentional... and I think it's not to achieve something like irritating people, I think it's trying to avoid the circumstances that can trigger an undesired event like crashes........... If memory serves, this first started being heavily noticeable about the time that they "fixed" the the loading bug of the tower. The two might be related.... But yes.... The more I see it, the more I suspect this is something they did specifically, and intentionally, to avoid or work around some other problem we don't know about.
