So I was going through and wracking my brain. I was pondering all we knew about him. It seemed like we were missing something.
We know his consciousness is alive, like Toland's. We also know he betrayed the Witness (hence his "Sin") and is spread apart in Darkness Relics across the Sol System.
So here's the big idea. The big theory.
Nezarec was and is the voice in the darkness.
First point of evidence is the glaive, Nezarec's Whisper. It's very name implies it has a whisper. Let's think back to where we've seen the voice speak to us.
It first appeared in Shadowkeep, heading the Lunar Pyramid just as we know Nezarec did. It then appeared, beckoning us to the garden and then in Beyond Light, offering us Stasis.
The voice has long been assumed to be The Witness, but we have had no confirmation. In fact, we have heard the Witness' voice, and it is different from the voice in the Darkness.
In Shadowkeep, the voice aimed to stop us from
blindly trusting the light. It made us realize the light's flaws. In Beyond Light, it offered us Stasis. Think about it in this manner: The Exo Stranger learned Stasis from another timeline, Eris Morn learned it from the Lunar Pyramid, which is a tomb of Nezarec, and The Drifter probably learned it on an icy moon with a resonance that drove his team crazy, just like Luna did with the K1 team. He also mentioned having been to the Fourth Tomb of Nezarec. No coincidence.
It also doesn't make sense for The Witness to offer us Darkness. Stasis isn't evil, it's neutral. Why would we be given Stasis to fight the Witness with. It also seems Nezarec selected Eramis to unify the Eliksni, but froze her in Stasis when it all went wrong.
Nezarec was a pretty powerful figure from human folklore even, so his control of more than one pyramid ship is viable.
So Nezarec's sin was affiliation with the Light, giving us Stasis and betraying the Witness to help us.
Why do you think Calus struggled to commune with the Lunar Pyramid. Surely with the powers of Egregore and the Witness, he should have been able to gain control. Unless it resisted. Unless Nezarec stood against his efforts and blocked his access.
On Europa, when we fight the cabal in Witch Queen, the pyramid views us as protectors and lets us in. If it were the Witness in control, he could have benefited from cabal darkness legions. But instead the entity in charge of the pyramid let us in to help and gave us what we needed.
In Garden, the voice attempted to show us Stasis with the statue but we refused it.
All throughout the narrative since Shadowkeep, Nezarec has been pulling the strings and aiding us. He provided us with Stasis and led us away from trusting only in the Light. That is his Sin. The very fact that his helm benefits wielders of the whispering void tells the truth. He has been helping humanity this whole time.
That was really confusing, sorry, but I hope you are enlightened. It makes too much sense to be wrong.

2 RepliesIve been having thoughts that Nezarec might actually help us if we resurrect him , wanna do some research sometime? New story mission tonight :)

Edited by SmashTigerHobbs: 9/23/2022 3:01:15 AMRandom thought: what if Nezarec was a disciple of the light at some point? Sort of like the leviathan. (The creature that rhulk basically gutted, not calus’s ship). Edit: And being a disciple of the light was his sin? (Lol I forgot to add this part)

Ahh I bet you’re loving this week’s seasonal story aren’t you mate 🤣

5 RepliesThe voice is the witness.. he took control of our ghost that's why he sounds different. When we were pulled into the garden at the end of shadowkeep the witness spoke in plural form just like he did at the end of witch queen. Nothing is confirmed with nezarec since we don't know enough about him yet other than that he was a possible disciple. There isn't enough lore to come to these conclusions. The pieces they are collecting are obviously of nezarec & mithrax has nezarecs finger. There's no evidence supporting his consciousness is preserved the way toland is.
-
Nah, the voice is definitely the Witness unless you are going to say that Nezarec and The Witness both refer to themselves as "we".
-
Only thing i found interesting was that you said Nezarac is spread across the systems in darkness relics. Odd that we are currently gathering relics of darkness. Curious. Maybe just maybe

I recently replayed shadow keep and when you see your guardian's mirror they hold their hands the same way that the witness does. I think we've been hearing the witness the whole time, but that's a super cool idea!

3 RepliesYour theory falls apart when you realize no, the Witness IS the Voice in the Darkness. Every single sign in the game points to that. And I remember vaguely that Savathûn even name dropped the Witness as the Voice during one of the story missions of WQ. Nezarec is a Disciple of the Witness. That’s pretty clear from the glaive’s text and multiple other sources in game

Edited by NeoReaper82: 9/12/2022 2:51:15 AMWorm: The Witch Queen did -->its<-- bidding. Earned Its trust. Rode alongside to apocalypse. Watched many burn. But the Witness turned a violet gaze to the Traveler. Witch Queen projected lies. Clever deceptions wrapped in shadow. Tides turned. Witness sent away, back amongst the stars. Ghost: Are you saying Savathun deceived the Witness? Is she the reason humanity survived? Worm: Not the reason. A reason. Not for humanity, but for Traveler. Why does it say ITS bidding and not the Witness's bidding? Could the IT be Nezarec?

A few of my crazy theories: - Were literally collecting pieces on Nezarec this season. The Witness wants to either A) resurrect Nezarec, or B) empower a new disciple (possibly Calus or Eramis) with the pieces. - Nezarec was a human in an outer colony during the collapse that was corrupted by darkness. - Nezarec is going to likely be revived in some form and act similarly to Savathun, not really aligned with the darkness but not really an ally either. Someone who could serve in both an antagonistic and assisting role at some point. I think we’re past the “Gathering Allies” stage for right now, and this season will end with the bolstering of the House of Light and our friendly eliksni. I don’t think Nezarec is the voice, the witness is. I think stasis was supposed to be a trap for us, similar to the future that the exo stranger came from. With her help, we were able to avoid that future in Beyond Light and it’s following seasons. Stasis isn’t inherently evil, just like our light abilities aren’t inherently good (as evidenced in WQ with the Hive Lightbearers). It’s the allure of newfound and unknown powers. I’m pretty sure Nezarec will be a major character in the story next year in the seasons following Lightfall, and that we are setting up for him. Idk. All I know is that we need to start introducing new villains to replace the ones we’ve beaten soon.

4 RepliesI will hit you with another fun theory. Nazarec is desciple of traveler. He betrayed the witness for the traveler and that is his sin. And he will be there to guide us when traveler will be destroyed. "He is that which is end. That which covets sin. The final god of pain—the purest light, the darkest hour. And He shall rise again. When the guiding shine fades and all seems lost He will call to you. Fear not. All He offers is not as dark as it may seem. For Nezarec is no demon, but a fiend, arch and vile in ways unknown. He is a path and a way, one of many. And his sin—so wicked, so divine—is that he will never cower when dusk does fall, but stand vigilant as old stars die and new Light blinks its first upon this fêted eternity." Also i would like to point out that he has to be connected with the void light. Void was feared in dark ages as a darkness (maybe Nezeracs influence) that way we got void helmet named after him.

Nezerac aka warlocks void mommy

Very nice theory. I liked it. Treat yourself.

2 RepliesA very nice theory. I liked it. But there are a few critical details you missed. First, the glaive. The glaive was given to Nezarec by Rhulk. I don’t know how Rhulk could give a glaive to a voice, but this is the confirmation. There’s a pyramid ship, and a section called chantry of the darkest hour, I think. And a helmet called Nezarecs sin. All this points to him being a disciple. But who knows for sure? Not even a wish dragon like me can spit facts all the time. I don’t know everything, oh seeker mine…

I do not believe the voice in the darkness is nezarac. I believe the witness is. We've never heard the voice in the darkness, only read about it and heard about it. It makes sense that it tells us about salvation. Every time we went to the Pyramid, our ghost was possessed. It wasn't Nazareth telling us that we have been waiting for. The witness talks like that. Take note that now that the witness has been revealed, are ghosts no longer gets possessed It has someone talking through it. If Nezerac wanted to speak with us we would have had way more cut scenes about that. Perhaps when we put the pieces together this season then nez will speak to us?

Anyone with a brain that stayed away from this moronic community's interpretations and predictions for narrative.

1 ReplyIt’s really sad when destiny players forget to take their meds and suddenly put more thought into reasonable lore conclusions than bungie.

10 RepliesNezarec is a disciple lmao

2 RepliesThis is all speculation.

6 RepliesSo the Witness is in Fact the Voice in the Dark. It's not Nezarec. The Reason Calus was having a Hard time was he had to link his Mind to the Luna Pyramid. Given he has no Paracasual Power, ya that's pretty darn Difficult. Everyone is Jumbling the Timeline of Events with Nezarec. Once you know what I know, everything you posted will become "Back to the Drawing Board"

🤯 He’s definitely got a rad looking helmet.
licks finger
1 ReplyWtf this is what happens when I miss a week of story content

2 RepliesCould he have betrayed the traveler instead?

4 RepliesEdited by SkinPoppeR: 9/11/2022 6:26:28 PM“One should always chose a side, Guardian. Even if it is the wrong one.” I personally believe Nezarec will return and be on our side. Guy can’t help his Darkness Nature why he had fun with us when he haunted us on Luna. He’s like Robert Collinson on What We Do In The Shadows. An Energy Vampire but he cares about us. Lol. So he still fights for us. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up a vendor in Lightfall like Saint-14.
