Now that each Arc subclass has a "big damage" Super, it's only fair that they be compared.
For the longest time, the argument was that Thundercrash had the highest risk involved, so it should do the most damage and should do it quickly. On the other hand, Chaos Reach is "risk-free" because it can be safely used from far away, so it should not do as much damage. Gathering Storm is not consistent with either of these ideas.
When using the best Exotics - Star Eater Scales, Cuirass of the Falling Star and Geomag Stabilizers - there is a clear winner. The numbers vary from source to source, but Gathering Storm does more total damage than Thundercrash by a margin of around 30% to 40%. Chaos Reach does around 10% less than Thundercrash.
Now, total damage is only one half of the picture - Burning Maul has very high potential total damage, but it's also very slow to deal it. Gathering Storm has a near-instant cast animation for a burst of damage and then the rest is done passively, so it can be added to the DPS of whatever weapons you are using. Thundercrash does its damage instantly, but you have to factor in a couple of seconds for flight and getting back to a safe position. Chaos Reach takes nearly 10 seconds to deal its full damage, during which time you are fully exposed to enemies and can't deal damage with anything other than Witherhoard or Anarchy.
Thundercrash is definitely the weakest when it comes to clearing massive amounts of enemies, because that's not what it is designed to do. Chaos Reach is good at killing groups that are far apart from each other, but its damage is still lackluster and Stormtrance is infinitely better at that job. Gathering Storm shuts down a large area for a long time, and that area can even move if the spear is stuck into a boss that survives it.
To be clear, this isn't a suggestion that Gathering Storm should be nerfed. It's raising the question of why it can tick all the boxes of high damage, high DPS, strong add-clear and low risk (and also solid performance with no Exotic armour), while Chaos Reach is forever consigned to the doldrums. It does less damage over a longer period of time and renders you unable to do anything else. What purpose does it serve?
