D2 Playerbase Decline (Chart) Why Bungie???

Bungie, Can you tell us in one of your future TWABs why D2 playerbase is declining and what’s your plan to prevent that. FYI: The above link (chart) shows steam population only from one major expansion to another. The chart shows the following 2 problems… a major decline in returning players at the start of each expansion, and another declining trend the very next month right after the release of each expansion. Here is another chart showing today’s D2 Population for Steam, PSN, and Xbox https://imgur.com/gallery/IXGgcnI Although it shows steam population around 50% the more realistic number is around 35% for each of these platforms (including steam). Regardless of the exact percentage… steam population on average represents one-third of the overall playerbase… and that can be used as a viable indicator that there is a major problem for steam D2 playerbase. Lastly, I suspect that console playerbase is facing a similar trend in decline from one major expansion to another. Although I do not have any numbers to back up such statement.

    • Bungie is in denial of the truth. Luke Smith did an interview very recently and he went off about how new players and returning players are turned off cause of the fact they missed so much, and that after Final Shape they will do "something" to make the game more friendly towards new and returning players. He is in denial and thinks the only reason people aren't playing thia game is cause we are so far into the story. But then why do people quit? Players that been here since day 1 are quitting fast, what about them? They got all the story, so why are they leaving. Toxic coping mechanisms. Where you are so quick to deny your faults, the very thought of you having flails is rejected before it can resonate. People quit cause of matchmaking, lack of transparency, lying, increasing cost to play year over year while reskinning is used more and more, lack of content, etc. Bungie will never address these issues even after this game dies, soon. 1 million pre-orders of Witch Queen is nothing compared to 850+ employees salaries, advertsing, upgrading technology, building costs, etc. The number in the chart are clear warnings but Bungie will obviously see it and go "everything is fine! It will all be fine cause we are the great Bungie!".

    • Destiny is dying, has been since bungie got rid of the real talent like Staten. Luke Smith hurt it even further. Rather than putting the necessary resources into the game bungie has opted instead to do the absolute minimum to keep it going, milking it until it dies.

      • Dont worry the usual suspects will be along shortly to tell you there are 2 million players online right now. Always interesting to me that there's less than 15% of players playing PVP but that is what drives every nerf/buff in the game.

        • Easy to answer this. Bungie is playing politics while only listening to the vocal minority of it's playerbase. They chase that minority (which is comprised of content creators and the like) and are not the average player. It's the same vicious social media cycle most games get stuck in. Real people who have a life outside the game become estranged.

There is a consistent delta in any game, in which the amount of players steadily decreases the longer a game has been out for. In many games some people dont even boot it up after buying it. When you look at achievement statistics in any given game somewhere between 7-10% dont even have the first achievement. And that number always gets higher the further into the game you look. Destiny is 8, going on 9 years old now. No matter what bungie did the playerbase would be declining. Eventually only the most dedicated of us will be left, and thats not because of anything bungies doing wrong, thats just because not many people can handle playing the same game for a decade.

              • If people don’t enjoy the game, they should do something else and the population should decline. It’s the people that complain about how awful the game is, but still chase triumphs and play daily, that give Bungie the data which says “everything’s fine”. It’s weird that this is offensive to so many people on this forum. The games quality has been declining, I wouldn’t be surprised if the player count is down. It isn’t dying, however. At least not yet.

              • Game is broken and empty!😂😂😂 Endless Hamster Wheel gaming with old and recycled content. Lack of creativity. Even though broken and empty, they keep milking a dry, skinny, and dying cow!😂😂😂 Game is failing! A huge indicator is Sony bought them out, the entire company and all of their creations, bought off by Sony! That’s how much this game is failing!😂😂😂 Even Sony won’t touch this broken and empty game for fear that their community would blame them too!😂😂😂 Empty! 😂😂😂

                • This is why I play Warframe. They don’t have a Seasonal Model. They do things the old fashioned way of launching huge updates every 6 Months or so and they give you plenty to do while you’re waiting for the new expansions so you don’t run the risk of content drought. Bungie needs to go back do that old fashioned way of releasing DLC every 6 months. They did this in D1 and many complained about content drought, there would have been no content drought if Bungie released a gave us enough stuff to do until they release the new huge expansion.

                  • I think its a combination of things, I don’t think destiny attracts young or new players with the lack of being able to just ‘jump straight in’ and actually have fun or play with at the light cap players, i don’t think its an attractive game for new players at all. The major problem for the actual player base is seasonal light levels, its becomes far too much of a grind, season after season grinding virtually the same content for seasonal levels to be able to play content you used to be able to but now can’t just for the sake of it is boring. Its become too boring, not that it wasn’t always grindy but you fall out of the loop for too long in a season, it feels too difficult to catch up. Light level grinding to play trials and grand master and master content each season should go. Levelling up at the start of expansions is enough. Crucible is especially problematic with having gear not available in the current pool, you come on, get smacked by meta guns that for some reason aren’t available and think why keep playing? A few years ago when fellwinters and dire promises were the meta, you couldn’t get fellwinters and dire promise god rolls were virtually unobtainable for a somewhat casual player, I just quit thinking what is point of grinding for the best when you can’t get it? I feel weapons like the messenger and palindrome have just become this again and exotic weapons that do something outlandishly better than a legendary equivalent being the meta is just 0 variety boring (no time and jade rabbit this season).

                    • Because after WQ story, this game fell so flat even Gumbie was jealous. It's a real shame. This season has been so boring. One of the worst, for me. The dungeon is totally un-fun. There's no reason to be canon fodder in Trials right now. I can't comprehend how some of you can stomach the aerial zone after all we've been through. The loot is bloated, and crafting is not immersive. Hell, even that pendulum swing is off and is now clipping into the turny thing. It's just boring man. The seasonal story mission narrative was fine, but the Leviathan was well....the Leviathan. More bounties. More check boxes. More of the same. I paid for it, so Ill log in..but I have little hope of this turning around.

                      • The removal of paid content and the amount of recycled content has pushed my friends and I away from this game more and more over time. Destiny 1 is still playable in its entirety so naturally people would assume Destiny 2 would be the same. I don't understand why the Witch Queen was the first campaign that could be replayed without starting a new character. It is pretty obvious to me that Destiny 2 would have a much longer shelf life if every campaign in the game was still available and replayable. We primarily raid and the fact our raids are being removed makes us all question the direction of this game. This latest season re-using the Leviathan raid was really just a kick in the teeth. Most raiders would undoubtedly rather have the raid back than time gated quest steps and a public event full of recycled ads and bosses. It is pretty obvious to most people that Bungie has put this game on a back burner and is doing as little development as possible to keep people engaged. I for one would gladly go back to the original model of large DLC's spaced out over more time than a drip-feed of recycled time-gated content. Also, putting activities behind level caps but not giving us new content to level is horrible and not remotely fun. Doing the same activities we have done for years just to get back into content we have already played isn't fun, it is a chore. Only the most addicted people continue to do this slog. If you are going to raise the level cap, there should be something new to do in order to level. The level caps have become a method to keep people out of content rather than to provide a challenge. There is no need for them when you can just add difficulty to the activity itself. This to me is proof that Bungie is more concerned with player time than players having fun.

The person that posted the chart orginally took that picture down on twitter. He made a miscalculation on Witch Queen and its the same decline that Beyond Light had. Its normal for the population to decline like that after an expansion. There's always a spike then it drops off.

                      • Wanna know a secret ? That's normal for games like this Look at ff14 chart ...it does the same thing after a dlc release At least its the updated chart and not the 1 with failed math at the end (used to say 50% declined for WQ) But yhea any dlc will bring players that will leave shortly after Also these numbers are for PC only which are around 25% of the player base But the a nothing to fear or there is no problem ....30% decline after a DLC is normal if it was 50-80 like it happened with WoW it would be a problem I believe skarrow has a video about it saying basically what i just said ( but he clown on it a bit 1st since its the failed math graph)

I finish real work n then come home to a grind of a fictious job..supposedly for a fun release.to only find out work hasn't really endedd. C'mon. A game is supposed to be fun. Work never ends..

                          • This happens every season. Numbers will go up next season and dip halfway through…..Every….season. This isn’t new to bungie. Players need to put the game down when content dries up. Play other games, go outside, reflect, etc.

                          • Not even a reason to get hyped for anything in the game for. A new expansion will come out and be nice for 2 weeks-month and then you’re back playing the same stale core activity loop. People are over it. Not to mention that Bungie is actively killing their game by nerfing things like the movement. I seriously have a hard time coming up with a single good decision that Bungie has made this year.

                              • So two things: 1) It should come as no surprise for any game that people become less active over the course of a month because we know people are excited for new things. And as a result, those on the fence between casual play and no playing anymore will get on briefly for a new content drop. In order for this pattern to be a problem in need of attention, it would need to be shown that the problem is markedly worse now than it was in the past, or that the problem is worse in Destiny than other games. So to make the point that Destiny has a tough time retaining players, you need at least one other chart. 2) Why are we just assuming the Steam population is 35% when the data you found says it's near 50%? I'm not just gonna take your word for it lol
