I have a 12 hour trip tomorrow and I need ideas for games to download on my phone (preferably free) that are fun and don’t get old quickly

If you like rogue ish stuff I recommend Pixel Dungeon. It's free & no ads, and I believe open source. People have made their own variations of it and Shattered Pixel Dungeon is probably the best (Sprouted Pixel Dungeon is a close second). I've also been playing a lot of MtG Arena recently since all of my Magic friends aren't local.

If your phone can handle it then Elder Scrolls Blades offers an ok wnough grind without energy mechanics to stop you, waiting mechanics yes but you can grind endlessly. Steampunk Tower 2 is much fun but it's gated by timers for new content. Life in Adventure is a nice text based RPG, I finished it in one run but you can fail if you don't get the "logic" behind some events though has absolutely no timegates.

Skullgirls: Mobile Edition. It has been a hot minute since I played it, but it was good fun. Sort of like a simplified fighting game crossed with some RPG-lite mechanics. You'll need to give it time to update once you download it, though, so be sure to open it up a good bit before you leave. If you're willing to spend a few bucks, the Steven Universe RPG is surprisingly well made. A bit easy, but if you liked the old Paper Mario games, you'd probably enjoy it.
