Class Niches; are they actually a thing?

Bungie has talked for awhile now about the role each class is supposed to fill. Basically it boils down to this… Titans: Tanky and strong. Able to deal huge amounts of damage and defend against incoming damage. “The wall on which the enemies of The Light fall.” Warlocks: Magic and space stuff. Able to use the powers of The Light to heal and empower allies, and weaken and destroy foes. “Studious and scholarly with many unique abilities and methods to achieve a goal. Warlocks are very powerful with the right tools.” Hunters: Fast and agile. Hunters are able to dodge in and out of combat, leaving their foes in the dust. The first to find new threats to The Light, and often the first to bear the brunt of combat. “With their many jumps and swiftness Hunters can escape and outrun almost anyone.” Except… this isn’t true. While Titans and Warlocks fit into their niches pretty well, Hunter are completely useless in theirs. The entire point to playing a Hunter is to move faster than the other classes, but that just isn’t the case. I was playing on my Hunter recently and was outpaced by a Titan with 43 mobility, even though I had 93 mobility. Sure Hunters have their dodge and on demand invisibility, but they are still missing one key aspect that the Hunters are supposed to be the best in. Speed. In game Hunters are supposed to be the best when it comes to get places quickly, but in reality all it takes is a low mobility Warlock or Titan to simply jump a few times in a row to get the same speed and more. In short… don’t believe the character creation screen. Hunters are not the best when it comes to speed. If you want to go fast and be strong just make a Warlock or Titan and jump a few times. Then you’ll also have the bonus of getting “space magic” or “punch good.” Maybe if Hunters were actually the fastest class things might be different. But right now the best bet for any serious player is just to play a Titan or Warlock. Hopefully Bungie will realize that Hunters don’t even have a “niche” in the game and will at least make Hunters a little faster.

  • Endgame hunters can get some of the highest damage resist amounts with renewals and dish out the most insane damage with a scaled up blade barrage. Their survivability with void lets them have invis on any weaken/volatile round kill and lets them heal with devour. There are plenty of things a hunter can do that the other classes can't, and while base speed isn't one of them the hunter sword launching or glaive skating is the fastest around.

Anyone could outrun you just by using a lightweight weapon. Mobility doesn’t affect run speed either. Strafe speed, which is side to side, and jump height. As for class niche, Hunters are also…Hunters and hunters do what? Trap and kill. What super does that? Tether. There’s your niche identity.

    • The niches definitely exist, but they are less overt than many think. Class abilities are a good demonstration especially for hunters- a titan barricade or even warlock rift can help you hold ground more effectively, or dominatr the enemy from a more or less stationary position, whereas the hunter dodge is more about repositioning. Any calls CAN hold ground, but some abilities are better suited to the task then others

    • All classes have the same run speed, if you were outpaced, then the Titan was using movement tech. Hunter has some too, try using strafe jump and hitting your head on a ceiling.

      • Mobility only improves strafe speed, which is kinda stupid. I hate being a Hunter main and running 100 mobility and having some fat crayon eating Titan with 10-20 mobility fly past me like I'm standing still, and it's the same with them dress wearing peasant Warlocks. Hunter, the mobile class my -blam!-.

        • Honestly, mobility should just make you go faster while running, because as far as i know, it just makes you walk faster. And since we are here, could we make it so strength also affects meele distance or damage? It definetly could get some type of buff, to not make it such a useless stat.

          • The overall kits are exactly as advertised. Titans don't get extra health for having higher resilience, warlocks don't get faster health regen than everyone else for having higher recovery and hunters don't get more movement speed for having more mobility. Those stats are tied to their class abilities as they should be. Hunters already have the best mobility in the game with only dawnblade being able to hold a candle to it. Before you can even suggest that changes are made to the other classes as well, Warlocks would be short changed and Titans would massively benefit by being made tankier since as we've seen before and are seeing again now, more health = easy fight.

          • You understand that mobility doesnt mean fastest right? I mean even the very definition if the word doesnt mean that. Hunters have the best jump they have dodge they also have 2 subclasses with a dive allowing them to get in and out of combat easier than any class in the game

            • Other than straight line speed, hunters have in my opinion the best, quickest and most unpredictable movement of all the classes. Even straight line speed can be pretty fast on hunters if you use directional jump and stompies. Now, i have barely touched titan and warlock so this opinion is coming from watching teammates and facing the different classes in pvp :)

            • The classes define as. Titan. Defensive . (Not damage) Warlock. Add controll and healing/support. Hunter. Single target damage. Can get in and out of areas better than the other 2.

            • Really, im just hoping that arc 3.0 makes hunters the fastest on their feet class in the game. Because that the whole point of arc hunter mostly, lol. I think the solar hunter is fun to play with. all the supers preform well. abilities are nice. Void hunter is certainly the medic of any pve activity as you can relyably just stay invisable through most situations. Arc hunter just needs to be the speed demon of the arc classes and it should be ok.
