I didn't know how awful weapon crafting was until I finally got around to trying it out.
It's really bad.
In my opinion, here's what could save it:
-blueprints need to be unlocked quicker/easier. By time I unlock a blueprint from the raid, there are already better weapons that I want to craft. By time I get those blueprints there will be better weapons, and this cycle just continuously repeats.
-it takes way too much time to level a weapon, and the enhanced mods aren't worth it. This system encourages mindless Shuro Cheese, which is awful design. Either make enhanced perks worth the tedium, or make it quicker to rank crafted weapons. Preferably a little of both.
Anyway, weapon crafting is horrible and I'll go back to ignoring it again unless the issues above are addressed.
Edit: hm. Interesting responses. It seems a lot of people agree with at least the part about blueprints being frustrating to obtain.
But, apparently, a lot of people believe that video games are for workin', not for enjoyin', and therefore I don't deserve crafting. Probably the same nerds who didn't use cheat codes.

I'd agree that getting patterns is way more of a pain in the -blam!- that it needs to be. However the weapons level up pretty quick just using them in activities and there gonna be around for a while.
