Is there still a 'host' in Crucible matches and why can't it be a server?

Curious if some of the more informed players can chime in. I'm not a fan of SBMM due to memories of most QP games having a noticeable amount of lag, while it's uncommon with CBMM, though I have the benefit of being probably the highest concentration of players in the US + fiber internet. I know Destiny's P2P code has been brought up a lot on why 'dedicated servers' can't work. However I still feel like there is a 'host' in games and that there is a noticeable difference. Sometimes all your bullets hit and you get the benefit of the doubt on corners, while sometimes the complete opposite is true. If this is the case, would there be a benefit to having a 'virtual player' that Bungie uses in crucible matches who is host but can be on a high speed, distributed network. That way one variable of lag is taken away and it's a more level playing field. If there wasn't the risk of constant lag, I"m not sure who wouldn't be OK with at least some loose SBMM. Something like the bottom 1/3 and top 1/3 of players don't meet, while both can play with the middle third. Restricting to 2/3 of the player base shouldn't impact waiting times much and would take away the worst of the unbalanced matches.

  • There was a YouTube clip on the hybrid system by some guys who throughly tested it when it came out. There is no “host” like we had in D1 where you piggybacked on another players connection. Now in this D2 system everyone makes their own connection to the game individually. If you have “good” internet you will still get matched with players who have “crap” internet which means there are games where everyone is all over the place “seeing” the game from their perspective. It’s a hot mess of a system which Bungie justifies with their “oh we will match players by connection quality” argument, which only seems to apply to players in the USA.
