Hi all,
I was playing trials today and we matched a team on their lighthouse game. I have a K/D of 0.42 for the season and my clanmate is 0.88.
One of the opposing team had been flawless 200 times and another 300 times. They had a K/D of 2.4 and 1.9 for the season.
Based on the above numbers I can't see any element of the matchmaking being skill based.
Is trials matchmaking purely connection based?

Matchmaking in Trials has always been a bit of a mystery to me, and I’ve had similar experiences where it feels completely unbalanced. I remember one time, my team — with pretty average stats — got matched against a team that was on their Flawless game. It felt like we never stood a chance. I’ve had a K/D around 0.6 for most seasons, and my clanmate hovers around 0.9, but we were up against opponents with K/Ds of 2.0 and above. It felt impossible to compete, and honestly, it made us question how matchmaking works in Trials. When you’re constantly facing players who’ve been flawless hundreds of times, it’s tough to keep morale high. In Destiny 2, I’ve played since Trials of the Nine was around, and that was a different experience altogether. Back then, the matchmaking also felt a bit random, but it didn’t seem as punishing as Trials of Osiris today. In Trials of the Nine, my clanmates and I actually had some decent runs, though we rarely made it to Flawless. The pressure was there, but we could manage a few wins before hitting a wall. As Trials of Osiris got tougher, I decided to try Destiny 2 Trials of the Nine carry a few times. Honestly, it was a game-changer for me. Instead of bashing my head against skilled teams and losing again and again, I could get help and enjoy the rewards without the endless frustration. Watching a pro player carry me through to Flawless was both impressive and a relief. It let me keep up with the game’s competitive side without sacrificing my enjoyment or dealing with matchmaking stress. At this point, I’ve accepted that matchmaking in Trials is mostly connection-based and not skill-based. While that makes for faster games, it also means that matches can be extremely lopsided, especially if you’re not part of a high-skill team. Still, with some help from carry services, I’ve managed to enjoy Trials more than I used to.

It’s meant to be a mix of card based and CBMM. But it also priorities short queue times and when the population is low like now the card based gets pushed out the way to keep queue times acceptable.

3 RepliesIt's card-based. Even the best players have a game 1. Several, in fact, if they play multiple cards in a week.

Edited by Joshazorr: 5/10/2022 2:34:04 AMIt is 99% tournament style matchmaking. Complete luck of the draw. Usually outside of freelance if your team is up to game 7 the game does try for a few minutes to find a team around game 6-7 but I've noticed in freelance it doesn't seem to do that at all And really that kind of pull random names out of a hat and do your best style of matchmaking is kind of the fairest possible way with trials because it means even if you're not very good you can still get lucky and go all the way to 7 maybe even flawless without having to absolutely ruin the mode for the people it's designed for (above average players)

2 RepliesBecause good players couldn't stand playing each other. They felt entitled to beat everyone else that they are better than. So they complained more than all the other whiners combined. And got sbmm turned off. So instead of actually getting good. They play new players and pve players to inflate their ego. Bungie doesn't believe in fair pvp.

Mix a little card state with a little CBMM and about a ton of get -blam!-. Bake at 420 degrees for 5 minutes. Ta-da, you have Trials Matchmaking.

It's about time someone other than myself ask's this? Bungie says card based then cbmm in trials to keep matching timely. Bungie needs to define their mm criteria better as they offer no definition other then card based for trials and similar skill for elimination and survival. It would be nice to know what metric they use to define similar skill

1 ReplyYou match based on the amount of wins you currently have on your trials passage. If there are no teams currently matchmaking on the same or similar wins as yourself then the search is expanded until a team is found. It's the fairest way to match make as everyone could potentially match anyone. The issue is the player base is too small and the amount of lesser skilled players in the playlist is dwindling thanks partly to freelance being an option.

The boy meets the girl and than go full beez on her. Questions?
-
It doesn’t. Never has, and never will as Bungie will always Bungo

4 RepliesEdited by Interpol89: 5/10/2022 1:51:16 AMWas it this match? Those guys are resetting their cards to avoid the flawless pool, and farming noobs to artificially inflate their KD. They could also be doing paid carries, because they have 7 straight wins, but only the blueberry has gone flawless. Edit: I removed the link, in case the mods want to ban me for “naming and shaming” cheaters.

Edited by Lore Oradon: 5/10/2022 12:54:13 AMTo add on to Eatz comment, when the Population gets Low, and if there isn't Enough players to play against in the Flawless Pool, it will dip into the Regular playlist.

It’s supposed to be card based matchmaking, i.e. you match up with people with the same wins on your card, but I’ve faced people who are one their first when I’m farming my 7th. This is probably due to low population in the playlist.
