The Witness

The Witness is here and they sit within our solar system but they do not attack…why? Is something preventing them from doing so? Are they not strong enough and need to build strength? I find it hard to believe that a force that can take entire worlds and rip them from reality would have to wait to attack….if we consider that the witness was actually the one to take the planets. Or maybe I’m wrong about this or just don’t know enough.

  • Okay think of it like this: Our guardian has slaughtered and destroyed everything in their path since day 1 D1 up until know. My theory is The Witness is trying to plan a way on stopping us, because canonically speaking everything so far has failed spectacularly. We literally cannot be stopped, so what happens when the ultimate villain who is supposedly the final boss of the light/dark saga’s sole outcome of victory is is being -blam!- blocked by our guardian? They’re probably gonna try to find a way to win before attacking.

      • Knowledge is power. It's analyzing our weaknesses and hubris. The only way you can utterly destroy your enemy is if you know them.

      • Ask yourself this question. Why would the witness attack if we are doing everything it wants us to do?

      • Yeah the witness is a -blam!-, and if I was the witness I would simply just make my pyramid ships invade the last city and make deals with enemies of the last city, like the house of devils. That's it, it is simply just like that, but since he is a -blam!- he can't.

      • It's because we are here. The Witness only Follows the Dark, the Traveler follows the light. We have both light and dark.....we technically out match both. Only problem is, we are bound by light, we lose ghost, all we got is dark. We need to link ghost to the same power the Traveler and the Black Fleet pull from. Then we can Nuke them both. 👍

        • What makes the Destiny Universe so fascinating is that in the endgame, the most powerful foes we battle against are NOT the nastiest cosmic horrors ever shat out by science fiction. We are fighting ideas. Concepts. Philosophical arguments made flesh.

          • After reading the fascinating comments, it makes me wonder if we’ll have the choice between Light and Dark in a future expansion similar to choosing between Horde and Alliance in WoW… 🤔

          • I don't think he actually reached us yet, I believe it was only a few as scouts, and as a message to the system.

It’s the philosophical side of the conflict. The Winnower wants to prove the Gardner wrong before wiping out the cosmos. If it can get us to fail, it’s game over. The Winnower goes over this in the lorebook Unveiling.

              • The Witness isn’t in our solar system. He has just been observing us, and trying to sway us to their side. They never directly get involved with any species they interact with; they always scheme silently (yet significantly) in the shadows. The cutscene at the end of the Witch Queen implies they are now on their way here. So either they appear in one of this year’s seasons, or ultimately in the Lightfall expansion.

The Witness is witnessing the Solar System. Duh.
In all seriousness, I’d think the Witness is more attempting to pull the Guardians towards the Dark. Like it did for the Hive. Make them distrust the Traveler. Playing the long game, I presume.
• The Witness is patient, he likes to watch and wait for the right moment. Also he tries to teach his ideals and convert his targets, rather than kill.

              • judging by appearance and the little lore ive read, the witness is like the referee in a cosmic survival of the fittest contest; however, that creature looked rather sinister so maybe one of many self-appointed maniacs patiently awaiting some kind of energy harvest? what i mean by energy harvest is quite grotesque and i don't want to scare "normal" so simply put, witness = referee seems suitable.

              • Tyrants rarely dirty their own hands. They over estimate their subordinates and under estimate their victims. Also would make the game too short if it went straight to the climactic battle.

              • Whatever this Witness is I’m betting it’s been around for a very long time. If it wanted to it could wait til our star went super nova.
