Do you prefer realistic graphics or cartoonish graphics in games?

Realistic

Cartoony

Don't matter/both

I like Tetris graphics

Some games have their own unique/signature art style while some games try to replicate real life graphics so it got me wondering, which one do people like more? Do you prefer realistic graphics with games like red dead 2, spiderman PS4, Detroit become human, etc? Or more cartoonish graphics like breath of the wild, telltale games, cuphead, sea of thieves, etc (just naming some games for an example)

  • Depends on the game. The story needs to be immersive either way or it doesn't work. I'd say that a good story can make up for lower quality graphics more than great detail can make up for a poor story.

    • I would say that realistic graphics offer better immersion, since it's closer to what we experience in real life, but two of the most immersice games i've plaued are Hollow Knight, a 2D platformer, and Journey, where you play as an Arabian traffic cone with legs. Hot take, but immersion is more affected by sound design than graphics or visuals. If you go with realistic, you better have a top-notch graphics team. Too many developers just desaturate the entire game by draining all the color out of it, then call it day. It looks "realistic" because everything just blends together in -blam!- mess, where the only difference between characters and the environment is that one is moving and the other is not. Apex and Call of Booty are notorious for this; i can't see -blam!- padt like 10m out. It's hard to say that these games a more "realistic" when Uncharted and Red Dead 2 are bursting with color. For the sake of argument, i'm going to say cartoony because most realistic games all look the same, and even more of them don't reap the benefits of beibg realistic.

    • Im a strong believer in the fact that Art Direction trumps graphical fidelity. There are a lot of older games that feature the ‘cartoony’ look that have aged better than their peers which strove for photo realism. Case in point Wind Waker, that game came out almost 20 years ago, and still looks better than half of the games that are released today. Having said that, I don’t have have a preference.

    • All depends on the tone and art direction

    • Suppose it matters more about how the game fits together with the graphics than anything else. But I absolutely hate Borderlands and related games art style. It's simultaneously not detailed enough and too detailed in the wrong way because of the comic lines. No, I don't hate Breath of the Wild or Wind Waker's graphics, yes I know they are similar, but they don't try to mix art styles weirdly like Borderlands does. Those game's graphics are consistent, instead of trying to mix high-detail semi-realistic graphics with cellshading and comic styling.

I care predominantly about the story and character relationships far more than the actual graphics

    • I'd say both, but then I realized the tone of the games I played work better with realistic. Bloodborne/AnySoulsborneReally, Battlefield (before 2042), Warframe... Yeah that's bout it. Mario Kart was fun tho...

    • It comes all down to art direction for me. But "realistic" graphics have the problem of -blam!- visuals way too much thesedays, so most AAA games end up just differenciating colors.

    • Realistic...For instance, I like Battlefield 1 but Fallout 4 needed serious mods to fix gunfire and guns...
Fallout 4 mods: Ballistic Realism Overhaul, See-through Scopes, Weapons Overhaul (AIO), Realistic gunsmoke, Realistic muzzleflash, Bullet Drop.... (something about Bloodspatter but I forgot what its called)...
• It really just depends on the context of the game I guess. One game I cant see without its cartoonish graphics is teamfortress 2

    • Doesn't matter to me. I like both depending on type of game. What matters to me is a good story, endgame, and versatility.

    • Honestly I prefer realistic with a touch of stylized. But I don’t know why. But I love the Borderlands art style

    • Both can give you amazing, breathtaking views, but stylized graphics are cheaper, smaller, and can help set the tone of a game a lot easier than realistic graphics can. Realistic graphics have their place, I suppose, but I can’t think of a single time I’ve thought “I sure am glad this game looks so realistic!”, but I can think of several where I’ve thought “Omigosh, I love the art style of this game!”.

    • I prefer games that function smoothly,… if you have to dumb down the graphics to make that work I’m fine with it.

    • Depends on the game / genre. I don't think Borderlands could be anything but cartoonish cell shaded graphics. Realistic based games I prefer to have higher quality graphics. I don't really play anything other than Borderlands that has cartoony graphics.

    • That's more of an art style than graphics. I'd argue graphics are things like resolution, shadow quality, view distance etc. Then art style I can separate way beyond realistic or cartoonish. I'm not sure which one I prefer entirely, but I do get tired of almost every AAA game looking almost exactly the same and everyone hyping it. If I go in that direction, I quite like where the Nier remaster landed - the art style is closer to being lifelike, but it's a bit softer and more colourful. If I have to think of a favourite art style in a game, Street Fighter Third Strike is up there. That game looks slick!

    • As long as the style fits I don’t care really. I can’t imagine Far Cry 7 working with cell-shaded graphics like Borderlands, and I equally can’t imagine Crackdown 4 working in hyper-realistic Unreal Engine 5 Matrix demo graphics.

I think it really just depends on the game or creator of the game. Things like Battlefield or Call of Duty I think our expectation is for those games to be as realistic as possible, so that’s what we get and enjoy. But Telltale does go with a more abstract or less ‘realistic”. style, so if you enjoy the game and the story thats what matters. All that to say, I enjoy both, but I prefer when they stick to a consistent style in some ways. Unless it was Battlefield Heroes, that game was fun and went off the path of Battlefield realism in terms of graphic/style.
