Collections SUCK! AND Exotic armour wasting vault space! Here's how to fix it.

So friend of mine threw out this idea on a chat today and I figured why not to share it here: Currently unused exotics are taking a lot of vault space. Lets say you get an insane roll, 69-base (nice) exotic armor with perfect split for that specific exotic, but that exotic is off meta or off of your current playstyle. So you throw it in vault and it'll stay there indefinitely. Wasting space. To fix this, we could just "Dismantle to Collections". If I now took that 69-rolled off meta exotic that I wont use and dismantled it to collections, that would be my new collections roll. Next time when I pull that exotic from collections I would get that same 69-roll back. Then if I happened to get a better one one day, orone with better split stats I could throw that into collections to replace the old 69-roll. EDIT: To be clear there would need to be two options to getting rid of that armor, select to either dismantle or to replace the current one in collections. This would make "collection" tab a real collection, and not whatever we have right now. And it would save an insane amount of vault space. A little edit: Stealing a comment that in my opinion had some great wording for this: Collections feel like it is under utilized. It’s often more as just an index to see that you’re checking items off. When we want it to be a viable way to retrieve gear.

  • Anything that helps with vault space I'm down for. Particularly armor rolls. Keeping each exotic for each character and a full raid set for each character really messed up my vault

  • That is a great idea. However, Bungie doesn't want you to keep items. They want you to have to waste dozens of hours getting it again when you need it. It means people who like grinding always have things to do.

    • That's a good idea, however I'm assuming that's not even possible to do technically for Bungie.

      • This is a great idea. I have 10 Eyaslunas in the vault, all different decent rolls. I could dismantle the best one to collections and that becomes the roll I get if I ever want to retrieve it in the future. I like it. There are some things I never use but keep them in the vault because they have a good rolls. Collections not lettjng us retrieve items with rolls is annoying.

This needs to happen as collections is currently basically only a glorified viewer for most armors and weapons. Would solve the vault issue.

Yeah the problem with collections is it doesn’t function like it did originally, and this feels like it is under utilized. It’s often more as just an index to see that you’re checking items off. When we want it to be a viable way to retrieve gear. It’s fine for cosmetics. It’s ok for exotic weapons, except they’re at the power floor. Exotic armor is both at the power floor and has bad stat rolls when you reacquire it. It would be better if you could acquire them at the lvl of your lowest equipped item. Except if it is something your class can’t use then you acquire it at the power floor. This keeps you from using collections to boost your character’s power, but makes it so you at least don’t need to infuse it to use it right away. I’m also ok with the idea of being able to save 1 stat roll for your exotic armor. You can overwrite it with another roll if you find something better. Does it make it like an extension of your vault. A little bit. But the balance can be that to “save” the roll it requires materials, and retrieving it from collections it will be at energy 1, no matter what. So for something you’re going to use even semi-regularly you will still want to use your vault. It’s a good quality of life change. One that could make hunting for exotics more interesting, as it can become a meta game within the game to have a collection full of high stat armor.

            • That’s a great idea 👍 Would make Collections actually useful instead of it being a display of what we’ve collected.

            • That's not the purpose of Collections. Collection's is your own personal collection of gear, GS, Ships you've collected over the weeks, month and Years. Not a Secondary Vault. It's mostly designed for Completion Player's. To help them keep track of what they need to get.

            • The functionality would be nice. Single roll stored would keep the UI the same, which would save them from having to redo collections. I'm guessing why they don't do this now is that instead of one single linking table join of AccountId to ItemId to indicate that you've unlocked an item, you now have to store each stat for each item, and weapons and armor are different, so that's getting to be like 10-12 things to store. Multiply that data by the total existing playerbase count (inactive + active), add in the indexes to make it functional, and it gets big pretty quick. And where do you stop? If they're going to do that, the next step might as well be to unlock all the rolls you've had. You could sell collections items always coming out at the power floor, one energy, and choice of elemental affinity to cut down on stored options. Maybe on the back end, they could mitigate storage or database model changes (now and future) with a "bitwise operator" - like a single coded field that has places within a single string or for the various stats. So it might look like this for armor stats" 151007101209 = 15 10 07 10 12 09 = 15 Mob, 10 Res, 07 Rec, 10 Dis, 12 Int, 09 Str Or, if you presume any one value will never go above 26, you can use letters (or 36 with letters & numbers) like "OJGJLI". Weapons could be similar but I'm not sure how many different total values you'd have to store for roles. Like all barrels would have to work, not just the barrels legal for a given gun, so you might have to go back to numbers and stay under 99. At some point though, you're really just re-inventing the vault with unlimited storage space. Which, don't get me wrong, would be awesome too.

            • Here’s the counter to that. If you have something that sits in the vault indefinitely….why are you concerned about it at all? You aren’t using it. Not for anything. Not breaking it out for the easy peasy content where you can use off meta gear? Then it’s just junk that you are hoarding for the sake of hoarding. No point in wasting time and resources making a dress up collections tab so hoarders can hoard more junk.

              • Fiting name Collection is mostly there to show what there is and want you got .... That ideas would take more memory and time to implement than adding more space

                  • So to sum it up, you just want to turn your collections into a more limited vault. At that point just ask for a vault space increase

                  • Here’s how Bungie could utilise collections
Edited by Demon_XXVII: Jul 30 2020 14 Demon_XXVII Demon_XXVII How about this solution: ALL perks are available on a weapon once it’s found (much like when you can see every switchable perk roll on Destiny Tracker - changing Perks allows a visual & numerical view of the stats, mods & masterwork) - those who use Destiny Tracker know what I mean by this) And once you’ve acquired that weapon - it goes into your ‘collection’ But (like with D1 system) ALL perks have to be completed in the tree order ... (and perks can be switched - say from Overflow/Rampage to Zen/KillClip, once completed) then the gun can be masterworked (with a switchable masterwork) ..... Once a weapon is fully unlocked (perks) & masterworked ...it can then be infused with light (via prisms/Ascendent shard to the max power cap available...currently 1360) & placed in the vault (an incomplete weapon returns to the collection with the progress saved) This system allows collections of weapons, ranking up with Banshee-44 for Armsday Filling in each weapon in a category (auto rifles, handcannons etc) ...allows a ranking system which allows access to special curated builds & experimental weapons from Banshee-44 Also allows for a grind to complete a full handcannon perk fill on every handcannon etc Gives credit to a seal ...let’s call it Gunsmith Ranking And the ENTIRE collection (if you’re crazy) - Armourer It also allows Bungie to buff/nerf perks & it affects everyone en-masse (with EVERY collection affected/improved) (I wrote something similar a few months back - can’t find the post - because Bungie don’t allow search)
• Collection is useless anyway. They better turn it into something useful.

                  • Technically, that would just turn your collections into another, more limited, vault.
