Ever since their great nerf in Y2, lmgs just haven't felt worth using.
My thoughts are give all LMGs a blanket 15% damage buff vs minors and a 10% buff vs majors.
Then give exotic lmgs an additional 5% buff vs both minors and majors.
Next fine tune the sub families a bit. So rapid fire gain an additional 5% buff vs minors. Adaptive remain unchanged. High impacts get an extra 5% vs majors and crits.

19 RepliesLMG’s one shot headshot all rank and file combatants. The buff wouldn’t do anything. You can’t one shot something more, and everything they can’t one shot isn’t a rank and file combatant.

4 RepliesThat’s a bit overboard. MG’s have a defined roll of sustained DPS and Ad clear. Half the issue is that Bungie puts encounters and modifiers that largely benefit powerful burst DPS weapons. The last raid encounter that was truly sustained damage focused was Insurrection Prime. MG’s need only a few things: - Increased ammo reserves across the board by about 30%. - Increased damage to majors by 15% and Bosses by 10%. - Increased base flinch values (gives all MG’s high cal intrinsically). Exotics: - Thunderlord and Heir Apparent should be good with these buffs. - Xenophage has its completely separate changes. Remove the “buff” it received recently, and give it a 15-20% ammo reserve increase. Thunderlord is very strong add clear and ramps up the weapon’s DPS is you can afford to get in close. Heir Apparent is the bullet sponge, one of the few defensive weapons we have. Xenophage bridges the gap between MG’s and GL’s, upping the burst DPS of the gun at the cost of Add clear capability and ammo economy. MG’s need to be the workhorse of heavy weapons. High uptime for a reduced power output.

Swords are more 1v1. Power Snipers need a buff… if I’m sacrificing an exotic slot for a power sniper then it should be a damage king.

They got a 20% buff already with Season of the Lost so in terms of their intended role for add clear they work great. I don't think they will ever be a dps option for bosses again because Bungie outlined quite clearly how they wanted machine guns to function.

I've been playing double Special using Lead from Gold recently. Very fun, even in GMs. Resource management can add another layer of risk. I wouldn't mind a nerf to LMGs.... but then they get MUCH more common ammo drops.

1 ReplyMachine guns suffer in dealing with bosses/Majors. I don't think they need help dealing with Minors. So I imagine a 15% buff on all legendaries against Majors/bosses would be ok. There could also be a greater difference between the categories. Rapid fire could passively have Rapid Hit. Adaptive could come with Light Mag passively. And High Impact with High Caliber rounds. Exotics need a individual buffs. Thunderlord could cause more lightning strikes which would already be a buff against Majors/bosses. Could also have a 5% increase in damage. Xenophage Should have its Nerf reversed and receive a 10% buff. Heir Apparent 10% buff too.

Honestly lmgs are worthless. There is no situation you would want to use one. Dps bad. Purpose of slaying low level ads bad. Ability to kill majors bad, champions bad. Its a worthless weapon type currently

1 ReplyI mean, I don’t disagree, since my SMGs generally do more damage than a LMG (but need to reload more often leading to lower sustained levels of damage but not by enough). I’d honestly say if you increased LMG damage by about 30-50% (for legendary, exotics need their own tuning tbh) you’d hit the sweet spot

I rarely enter the devils lair gm without my trusty adept swarm Edit: Because I keep getting a lot of seemingly upset posts, I want to clarify that I'm not trying to say that they shouldn't be buffed. I want one of my favorite weapon archetypes to get better just as much as the next guy, but I [i]am[/i] saying that they have a role in the game, and they are far from useless as they are.

I haven’t run the numbers yet but I would say, with a 40% damage buff, sweet business is going to out damage all exotic legendary and exotic LMGs while having unlimited ammo (against minors anyway)

I’d like a buff similar to particle deconstruction for LMGs. There are a lot of good LMGs in the game but they’re outclassed by every other heavy right now in every activity. I use gjallarhorn in pvp. It’s actually broken in pvp….so many multi kills lol
