Seraphim Crypto has passed away

It’s with a heavy heart that I have the unfortunate responsibility to share with you that Seraphim Crypto, a friend and community moderator, passed away over the weekend. For the past couple of months, he had been in a medically induced coma after suffering a brain aneurysm. I keep typing and deleting what I write because I can’t find the right words to describe Seraphim and the loss that we all feel. He was a friend, and I considered him a colleague on the forums. He spoke often of his partner in a loving and playful way. He was often chatting about something in our Discord, usually moderation stuff, but others things, too. It wasn’t uncommon to open up a chat and see him chatting away with someone about something random. I’m incredibly grateful that I was able to meet him once. He was from Germany, and because Bungie considered him one of the leaders from that community, we flew him to Seattle to take part in a community summit. It was an all-day event, so I only managed to chat with him for about 10 minutes before he had to get back to it, and he was leaving the next day so that’s all the time we had to say hi, but I purposely left my desk to go meet him when I heard he was visiting. While he was excited to be at Bungie, I was excited to see him. I’ve known him since 2015 through the website and Discord, but had never met him in-person nor seen his face before. We took a photo to capture the moment. In 2015, he was asked to become a Mentor to help our Germany community. He wanted his avatar to be a fanart of Mega Absol from Pokemon because it represented his username well (Seraphim – Angel wings; Crypto – Dark/Shadow Pokemon type in German). In 2017, we gave him Ninja powers to help moderate the website, but he never stopped trying to help people and answer their questions. I found this quote inside a private thread from that time, when he was asked why he wanted to become a Mentor:
”I'm a person that loves to help other people out of many reasons, the simplest one that it keeps me happy. Also, I'm a fan of Bungie since my mate introduced Halo 2 to me in 2005. And ever since the beta, I'm amazed by Destiny. Earlier this year I came back to Bungie.net forums and noted the #Help-Forum. I dived in there and answered a few questions. People thanked me and it made me happy. So I started helping people everyday and that led to an invitation of Bungie to join this team. I decided to join the ranks because I want to give the community back the love they gave me!”
Most recently, he helped me find websites in Germany for the Mental Health Resources that is now live. He was really happy to help with that. When he wanted to relax, he’d post in OffTopic, which is why this is in here. Sometimes he’d answer random moderation questions in here, and other times share his opinion about a game. Some of you would even create threads about him, hoping he’d respond. He enjoyed it. I ask that you share any fond memories you have of him. I will be sharing this with his partner, and I think they’d appreciate seeing what we share. Rest in peace, Seraphim. We miss you.

  • I only knew him as a ninja on the forums but he was BY FAR the best and most respectful of them. The interactions I had with him were always respectful and professional and I’m sure he was like that in-person. My condolences to those that knew him better than I. Rest In Peace

  • Well damn. That really sucks. I may not have spoken with or played much with him, but the few times I did he seemed like a genuinely nice person. I hope his family is doing well, and have my condolences.

  • Wow, I didn't expect to see this. He was a great moderator who was always willing to help, and was all around pleasant to talk to. I didn't know him personally, but from what I've seen and experienced he was definitely a great part of the community. Rest in peace, Seraph. It won't be the same without you.

  • At the start of this season, I had just came back from a year away. After a week or two, I decided to try and so shattered realm. I didn’t wanna post in find a fireteam, because I was low light and wanted help. Didn’t want to make people mad. So I made a forum post asking for help, Seraphim responded within 2 minutes, and by the third he was in my game, carried me through shattered realm. I wasn’t in chat with the guy, so we didn’t get to speak man to man, but I had thought about him a couple of times a week this entire season. And now… yeah. I’m really sorry to everyone close to him, he was truly a kind hearted person.

I remember a conversation I had in a party chat with him. It went something along the lines of “have you ever banned me?” His response was to jokingly say “I don’t remember every bug I’ve squashed.” Damn, Rest In Peace man.

  • He was one of the most even handed, pleasant moderators I've encountered on any forum. He will be sadly missed. Condolences to his friends and family.

    • It's clear from the other replies that Seraphim touched the lives of so many people here and elsewhere; not just as a Mentor and Ninja, but as a friend. Despite knowing him for a few years, I unfortunately only got to play with him once. Still, it was evident he had a passion for these communities he was a part of, and it's devastating to have lost such an amazing person. My heart goes out to his partner, his friends, and family. 💛

    • I am still shocked and can not really believe it, Seraphim was a friend who was always helpful to everyone. Humanly he was also someone you could talk to or just have fun with. He will be missed by all of us.

    • Didn’t really know Crypto well but whenever I saw em on the forums he was either helping someone in their time of need or just simply chatting with them. During season of the splicer someone made a post asking about the eliksni in the Annex next to the vending machine and I jokingly responded that they were splicers in training trying to coax the machine into giving them free snacks, then Crypto followed up with a joke about them paying with strange coins. From the brief time I’ve known Crypto he seemed to love this community just as much the people behind it. It was truly an honor to make his acquaintance and he will be missed dearly. Rest In Peace Crypto, you were truly a remarkable Ninja.

    • I played with Seraphim back in Destiny 1 and on Xbox for Destiny 2 until the PC-version came out (this was well before cross-play). I enjoyed speaking with him whenever I had the chance to play. In our private group chat it was great to speak with Seraphim about Destiny and moderation. He cared about the Destiny and Bungie.net community. This news has been tough on the forum moderators and myself. Our moderator group was a fun, little online family. I am devastated... I was hoping he would make a recovery. I pray for his family during this difficult time. Rest in Peace Seraphim Crypto. You will be missed. :(

      • This is absolutely devastating to hear. He was always there to guide me and mentor me through my journey as a Mentor. His love and passion for helping others was infectious, and he did it so selflessly. He truly cared for the Destiny community, and never once hesitated to help someone in need or make someone feel welcome. He was the definition of what it meant to be a Mentor here on Bungie.net, but more than that, he was the type of person we should all strive to be. Ruhe in Frieden, Seraphim. We love you.
