1. I hadn't heard of the buy out when I posted....still at work, and been busy today.
2. Not necessarily. That's the OLD Sony. The Sony that was committed to being a proprietary hardware maker, and trying to defend its turf in a console war. If you're old enough to remember the ORGINAL war between MS and Apple (1980s) Apple tried to do what Sony was doing. Build their business around exclusive hardware rather than software....and MS DESTROYED them. Nearly drove Apple out of business.
Only when Steve Jobs came back and saw the that future was mobile computing...and that the key was the SOFTWARE that made (disposable) hardware relevant....did Apple beat MS to the punch in mobile computing. Because MS was too busy defending its monopoly on destktop computing.
What MS and Xbox are doing now is showing that they LEARNED from their mistake with a re-emergent APPLE....and are moving to beat Google and Amazon to dominance in cloud gaming.
But it will again be software, rather than hardware that is the path to market dominance.
So MS is using their cash reserves to basically buy up AS MANY major video game development studios as possible...to basically LOCK Google and Amazon out of the game before those two manage to figure out which way is UP.
Although Sony isn't seen as MS main competition any more as Xbox tries to create a multi-platform Xbox "ecosystem"....
Sony is staring down being left out to dry in this Cold War....and watching all of their biggest franchises being locked down and under the control of competitors who could just SQUEEZE them out of the market and into irrelevancy. (IOW, they get stepped on by MS by accident).
So this move----if Sony is smart----isn't about turning Bungie into a Naughty Dog (Uncharted) or a San Diego Studios (MLB The Show...which used to be a Sony exclusive). This was about making sure that there are games that CAN be played on Playstation while this Cold War resolves itself.
Sony has also started to show some smarts and some understanding that the future isn't about console exclusives.
Formerly exclusive games like God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and MLB The Show are going multi-platform. They've also given up their resistance to crossplay and crosssave.
Sony won the console wars. But they will lose the race to cloud gaming, and possibly become irrelevant if they keep trying to REFIGHT the console war. The way you lose the NEXT war, is by continuing to fight the LAST one.
