So in the lore book talking about the venders on the vaulted planets, Vance goes into the Infinite Forest and starts singing Hope for the Future with some alternate versions of himself. But then one of them finishes the song for him and he strangles him to death. I've been confused about why he does this. I wasn't playing Destiny when Vance was in the game so like is he just that mentally unstable or did it genuinely come out of nowhere?

It could be linked to the corrupted copy of Maya that the Vex used to infiltrate and attack Clovis Bray. When the Vex start making copies of someone, it isn’t for good reasons.

Vance was never right in the head to begin with, evidenced by being a part of, and effectively leading, Osiris's cult among other tidbits of his past. As for him attacking his own doppelganger, the latter would've probably done the same since Vance is intruding the Forest. Interestingly, the struggle with his doppelganger implies that Vance's blindness was a result of him physically losing his eyes rather than them simply being too damaged from his past accident.
