Edit: DON’T JUST READ THE TITLE! You don’t have to read the whole post, but at the very least read the suggestions I listed at the bottom and understand that it’s the nature of nightfalls that I think makes them boring to farm, not the idea of farming itself.
Nightfalls didn’t use to be something payers were expected to farm in Destiny. Sure, some players farmed them in Destiny 1 for skeleton keys/strike-specific loot, but generally the nightfall was something you did only once per character each week.
Currently in Destiny 2, players are strongly encouraged to repeatedly farm nightfalls for multiple reasons, mainly nightfall-specific weapons, masterworking materials, and vanguard reputation.
I believe this is a poor system for 2 main reasons.
The first reason is that it devalues the regular strikes playlist. Anything you can get in the regular strikes playlist can also be just as easily obtained in a matchmade nightfall, and nightfalls even give more vanguard reputation. This leaves essentially no reason to play the strikes playlist other than for fun.
The second reason is that nightfalls are the same each time you run them in a given week. They rotate weekly, but if you play 20 of them in the same week, they are exactly the same every time. This makes it feel much more monotonous to farm repeatedly than something like regular strikes. This problem is also much more severe on lower difficulties because they tend to go quicker, making the “loop” shorter, and they don’t have enough difficulty to make them engaging in that way.
Here are my suggestions:
- Remove Adept difficulty from nightfalls
- Add matchmaking to Legend Difficulty
- Significantly reduce the amount of reputation gained from nightfall completions
- Add 1-2 enhancement prisms and a large amount of bonus reputation as additional rewards for completing the 100k score challenge each week
- Add Adept difficulty to the regular strikes playlist (this would essentially be like heroic strikes from Destiny 1)
- Adept difficulty strikes would have more modifiers active at a time and would be harder than Normal difficulty, but no harder than Hero difficulty nightfalls
- Adept difficulty strikes would reward additional xp, significantly more vanguard reputation (enough to be better than farming even a Legend nightfall), and a slightly higher chance for strike weapons (i.e. Empty Vessel, Royal Entry, etc.)
The idea here is to provide a slightly more challenging version of the strikes playlist that is still fairly relaxed but also more efficient for farming reputation than Hero or Legend nightfalls, while players are significantly rewarded for doing the nightfall once each week for the challenge. However, since neither the challenge nor the strikes playlist can give ascendant shards, players will still have a reason to farm Master and Grandmaster nightfalls, which are challenging enough to be engaging despite being repetitive.

1 ReplyI think bungie needs to have nightfalls that benefit us. In D1 some weeks nightfalls we're brutal. Then some weeks they were fun and easy. It was nice to have that option and not make everyone a head beating experience. It's as if they don't want us to have fun

Imagine writing an encyclopedia worth of rambling and demanding people actually read beyond the title. Another pro bit of advise; usually you don’t state an obvious point so common knowledge normal people don’t bother saying it and call it “unpopular opinion”. I realize your desperate to entice people into actually reading your word vomit but gimmicks work better if they aren’t contradictory.

Farming should be just the boss fight. Not the entire strike over and over.
-
Agreed!!
-
I DISAGREE COMPLETELY. its end game content you're not required to do bud.

The regular Strike playlist really needs some love. The playlist-exclusive rewards are don't drop often enough to justify the massive perk pool that makes farming for them impossible. The items themselves aren't that desirable either; the Rocket is good because of Gjallarhorn, the GL was only notable last season, Sidearm and Pulse Rifle offer nothing worth chasing (the same is mostly true for the weapons from Crucible and Gambit too). Farming Nightfalls depends on the Strike, for me. I don't mind doing ones like Devil's Lair or SABER because they're pretty good Strikes that have relatively high amounts action and aren't difficult. I would absolutely rather die than try to farm Glassway, Proving Grounds or Corrupted though.

Anything that involves ( constantly ) repeating the same activity over, and over again is bound to become monotonous. I'm not saying there shouldn't be any grinding in Destiny, but more often than not, this game forces a very, very specific type of grinding, which quickly results in burnout, and resentment, because its the exact same activity that has to be done a 100+ times.

1 ReplyYou're right, glad I read. 1) slightly more difficult regular strikes sound fine to me. They don't really need two playlists though (sounds like you want a heroic and non heroic). I think making the good ole strike playlist on par with the adept nightfall difficulty really isn't that bad. Not like it would add champions which people would freak out about. 2) matchmaking for legend seems fair as well. Legend difficulty also seems fine. Tbh it's not that hard. Even if you luck into potato flavored blueberries you're still gonna beat it. 3) more reputation gains in general for strikes needs to happen (and Gambit tbh). Honestly though, I enjoy the GM grind and not really any lower nightfalls. I like the difficulty.

5 RepliesAfter 7 years of this game, farming has become boring. Let me repeat that again. BORING! 😂😂😂 State of the game.
-
5 RepliesNothing is rewarding after 500 runs or clears.

That’s unpopular?
-
3 RepliesFarming in general isn’t fun

Edited by WormChi: 12/29/2021 8:50:23 AMAfter the changes to weapon drops being split between two different weapons and the inability to chose your nightfall at the end of the season I can’t be bothered to do them any more. Glad I got my Uzume and Pali before the changes.

15 RepliesThe strike playlist is par for the course of getting a pinnacle you need. Nightfalls are thee single best farm the game has. It drops everything. The higher the difficulty generally the more lucrative the rewards. The artificial difficulty being what it is, is the only way to keep us as players in check without letting power run wild........but if you want that power to run wild (power fantasy) you need to accept sunsetting as a norm and we saw how that went down. So we're stuck with power limits and artificial difficulty. If we weren't restricted it would be right back to an SMG / GL Meta......which was as about as fun as watching paint dry. I went on a tangent for the poeple complaining about champions and restrictions. It's there to keep us in check without Bungie needing to over exert themselves.

4 RepliesYour suggestions purely make it more rewarding, not more FUN. You want fun? Make Champion mods applicable on any weapon so people can actually use what they want to.
-
1 ReplyI farm beets not strikes
-
How is that an unpopular opinion? Who likes running the same activity over and over again for the .00000001% chance they get the perks on the gun they want?
-
1 ReplyLeave adept difficulty. Sometimes I just want to farm weekly can xp real fast or get major kills quickly for a bounty.
-
1 ReplyI'd rather Bungo go back to the old D1 model for Nightfalls. Once a week, high likelihood of great rewards (no bullshit ghost shells), XP boost for the week, and return to orbit for a team wipe.

I like farming but i dont think legend is rewarding enough when it comes to the nightfall weapon drops. Ive done 9 on hollowed lair since yesterday. Ive got one plug one but i got an exotic armor piece 7 out of 9. When did we get to a point where exotics drop more often than legendarys? I got aggravated cause i kept getting exotics instead of uzume or plug. Ive got all exotics only use a select few. Id like to see nightfall weapons be like the updated trials. Lets have a vanguard engram that we can pick what weapon we want. Iron banner desperatly needs this to on a side note.
-
Remove adept? You must be joking. There are already too many kinderguardians running around in hero that can't take down a champion.
-
Add nightfall spoils. Let us farm the adept weapon of that week by using them at the final chest. It sucks grinding 75+ nightfalls and STILL failing to get your desired adept weapon, like I’m dealing with hothead. I had to go through 75 nightfalls for a subsistence/trench barrel comedian.
-
Agree I miss d1 nightfall system as a solo player. I can see why other players enjoy them though
-
Why is this an "unpopular" opinion??? Strikes haven't seen any changes and additions since year 1. It's the most boring and dull content in the game. The addition of champions only made it worse by forcing loadouts. Noone ever "enjoys" running these. It's just the only "consistent" source of endgame mats if you're not a carry streamer for trials. Literally every single player who has been playing for more than a year is completely burned out of strikes. Or at least should be since this strike content is older than i am.
-
2 RepliesAlso, let's mention that Champion mods kill replayability so fast. Nothing makes the farm more dull than having to run the same loadout every single run instead of allowing the player to take breaks or try different weapons to keep things from getting stale.

What it needs to be is have weapons specific to strikes again, make them available IN basic strikes, but have them at a small drop rate, and each level of Nightfall having a higher change per tier, with Masters guaranteeing the unique one and a random drop of the past ones and other tiers having a chance for it or the random ones, and the GM Nightfall guaranteeing the Adept version to make doing them all worth it and not require farming Nightfall for a tiny chance at a weapon.
