Trials of Osiris matchmaking needs to be overhauled
I know a lot of diehard PvP guys aren't going to agree with this, and that's fine.
Bungie made the recent changes in Trials to make the mode more appealing to the PvE community that never really got involved, most likely to supplement the lacking player base and increase involvement. This clearly worked. While I do appreciate it as a PvE player, I have to say it doesn't really make a whole lot of difference if I can solo que, or que with some friends and we get matched against people with MMRs that are more than triple what my team is. I've only been playing a bit over the last few weeks and I've gotten up to the mid 900s - nothing impressive. My friends play semi regularly and they're around the 1300~ mark and have gone flawless a few times in the past. If you have two 1300s and one 900~ then what logical explanation does Bungie have for consistently matchmaking me against people in the top 1-3%?
I check every single opponent I go against to see how challenging they are and the lowest I've ever had in my team is an opponent of 1800 (with two teammates above 2000). When I solo que it makes even less sense. It has no issues matching me on a team with players in my bracket but it never manages to pair us against opponents in that range. I played for 4 hours and recorded every single opponent I had and the lowest was still above me. I had a few matches where I'd be paired with two people close to 1000 but our opponents were well above 2100. This makes no sense, it's really discouraging and I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. If you're going to play trials you want to have a competitive match. You don't want to go in and either totally destroy your opponents or get totally destroyed every match.
I understand how the card system works and I get it - trials is end game pvp, but if Bungie wants to retain a PvE player base to supplement trials player numbers they need to do more than offer match XP and rank items (which take forever to get as it is).
If diehard PvP players really like a challenge like I constantly read here and on reddit, maybe it's time to introduce tiered ranks that determine your matchmaking pool. I don't see the point to having and MMR if it means literally nothing in terms of matchmaking. When someone plays competitive CS and they're a silver III they aren't going to match against Legendary Eagles.
If I have a KD under 1, a KDA under 1 and a win rate of less than 30% then why in the world is it okay to have me go up against someone who's like 3/4/65%
Bungie needs to decide if they want trials to be accessible or if they want it to be competitive - you can't have half measures. If they want to go full competitive, it's ultra hard, only the best of the best make it, then make it ultra competitive, get rid of the PvE style loot table and keep the flawless pool active all the time so flawless players only go against flawless players. If you want it to be more accessible to non hardcore players, give us brackets.
Again, PvP guys won't like this. If going to the lighthouse is so special and only the best of the best get there, it doesn't really mean a whole lot when your first 3 wins are against people that have literally no chance and don't even put up a fight. I'm not even a pvp main and the rare time I go into a game and we steamroll I find it super boring. There's literally no joy in what is basically the videogame equivalent to kicking a bag of puppies. Basically, if you're going 5-0 in the first 3 on your card, there's a problem with matchmaking and this needs to be addressed.
Also, it's clear Bungie doesn't really care about pvp - there had to be some ulterior motive for the changes that they made. Whether this is due to a lack of participation and poor subscription numbers after introducing anti cheat (what a joke) and making trials locked behind a paywall or a means of encouraging more PvE players to subscribe by enticing them with a reworked PvP mode, it's clear that there was a motivation behind it that doesn't have the PvP community's best interests at heart. If they did they care about the PvP community then they would have kept trials the same, added new PvP rewards and maybe added a new map in the last 3 years.
