Dumb question about kinetic vs energy vs heavy

I am a returning player. I think "primary", "special" and "heavy" were replaced with "kinetic", "energy" and "heavy" about the time I burned out and stopped playing, circa 2017. So I know probably everybody but me knows the answer to my question: All else being equal (eg rate of fire, impact, range), do kinetic snipers/shotguns/grenade launchers/etc do the same DPS as energy weapons, just minus the burn? Or, do energy weapons innately do more damage, all else being equal? It used to be that special weapons did more DPS than primary, and heavy did more DPS than energy, with this reflected in the relative scarcity of ammunition types. The reason I am asking is that I got a kinetic grenade launcher last night, which struck me as pretty weird, but the same question applies to kinetic snipers and shotguns, and energy auto rifles and hand cannons. Thanks.

Depending on what archetype the special weapons do the same damage. So if I have a sniper in both the Kinetic slot and energy slot and they both have the same impact they will do the same damage. Only difference is that the energy sniper will break a shield quicker depending on what element it is. This is the same with any gun in both slots. If they have the same impact they will do the same damage. It also depends on the RPM of the weapons. Faster RPM means it’ll do less damage per shot. While slower RPM means it’ll do more damage per shot. So pretty much a 180 handcannon will do the same damage no matter what. Same with a 120 and a 140 handcannon. This is also the same with Grenade Launchers. Both Kinetic and energy Grenade Launchers do the same the damage. Hope this helped out a little bit.

    • Kinetic weapons do 10% more base damage against unshielded targets than energy weapons.

    • There are still primary and secondary weapons but they can be in either slot. The slots are called kinetic and energy. You you can have a primary energy handcannon for instance (e.g. sunshot). Any kinetic weapon (regardless of it being a primary or secondary) does 10% more damage to unshielded combatants compared to the exact same weapon archetype in the energy slot. This is to make up for energy weapons breaking shields more easily. So your kinetic special grenade launcher will do more damage to an unshielded enemy compared to an energy special grenade launcher.
