Multiple gaurdians have died because of their ghost getting shot. Every time, the Gaurdian dies/nearly dies and the ghost materializes and gets shot. Cant the Ghost just wait until there are no enemies around?

15 RepliesActially by the lore. Ghosts are nearly indestructible and Hive are really the only ones capable of destroying one on the regular. They can preform rituals to suck the light right out and pretty much kill the ghost. On top of that Dregen weapons were created for killing Guardians and that includes killing their ghost to prevent the guardian from coming back. These dregen weapons are made from various Hive resources. Its not clear what resources are used as that would be highly classified into by the vanguard (plus Eris supposedly Drifter), thus we wouldnt know ourselves to prevent another dregen war. If you remember at the beginning of, Forsaken the bullet that was used to take out Cayde's ghost was hive made... Meaning it was made of hive resources. Only one reason in the game any gun or bullet is made from those. It was enough to literally shatter his ghost with ease might I add.

Edited by WulfPak666: 9/5/2021 12:49:33 AMBased on some of the people I've played with, it honestly shouldn't take much to end a guardian's existence.

What is a gaurdian?

2 RepliesGhost’s spend a long time searching for their guardians out in the open, so it is extremely rare and surprising when they are actually destroyed. I assume you are using the example of Sundance and Cayde which is why he died. There are not a lot of things that can kill a ghost, so when something can, it extremely unusual. In Cayde’s case, it was entirely his fault.

3 RepliesEdited by EmeraldWaves996: 9/4/2021 12:26:14 AMGhosts are extremely durable. There is a pretty cool example of The Drifter’s ghost literally flying through someone’s face to defend him. They also use stealth and other tactics to survive in the wild while searching for their Guardians. A Ghost dying is pretty unusual and tragic.
O Reader Mine
It’s because they are mostly hunters and the ghosts are rushing to get it over with after they died so many times.

1 ReplyThis is actually one of the more interesting topics because the lore around killing ghosts changes based on the time frame. For example in D1 and D2 Y1, ghosts could be killed by anything. In D2 y2 ghost could only be killed by darkness infused weapons like thorn. Later it changed to ghost could only be killed with a darkness weapon or if they are in a darkness zone. Based on what we've learned form witch queen, apparently hive ghosts can only be killed by crushing them with your hand. But I hope that weapons of sorrow can kill them as well since they can kill guardian ghosts.

We aren’t. If you’ve noticed the things killing the ghosts are powerful entities such as ourselves, the darkness, hive, fallen, and cabal. We aren’t dying to some random human.
-
My question is if we are gonna have to grab and crush a Hive Ghost in Witch Queen to make sure they don’t get revived why doesn’t the Hive or any other race just do that to us if it’s that damn easy? It was always my understanding that destroying a Ghost is very difficult and requires special ammo to do so…

6 RepliesEdited by Olórin: 9/4/2021 8:06:32 AMIts Rare for a Guardian to die fully alongside their Ghost. Most of the times it has happened is when the Guardian/Ghost decided to do something stupid and expose their Ghost/Themselves to the enemy. Shayura killed someone this way, Zavala's Ghost wanted to be nosey in the '1v1 me Bruh' with Caiatl. And possibly the dumbest death is Cayde-6 who literally whipped out his Ghost, Sundance, infront of a guy named 'The Marksman'.

Regarding the lore of exactly what can kill a guardian or specifically what can kill a ghost: It seems to be pretty difficult for anyone but another being with similar levels of power. Risen beings can kill ghosts with their weapons for the same reason we can kill other paracausal things like hive gods. Our light flows through all of our equipment and imbues our bullets with paracausal power. When Pirrha, the Rifleman killed Sundance, the bullet that did it was a very special projectile referred to as a "Devourer" round. This bullet was likely carved by a Hive gunsmith or other powerful being of the darkness.

The ways in how to kill a guardian final are in the best case „inconsistent“ in the handling by bungie .. Croat needed a special sword to kill a guardian once and for all .. To kill Cayde-6, the Fallen Baron used a special sniper to destroy his ghost .. in the Lore ghost we’re killed by ramming thorn spikes through their optics In the drifter story guardians simply were drained of their light so they stayed dead and the ghost were still alive (until the drifter „collected“ them) Lady Efredeed threatened the ghosts of some arisen that she will blast them to pieces with her shotgun. Eris teammates were drained of their light and killed this way. Eris ghosts alledgedly was killed while luring the hive away from her The first vault of glass fireteam of Kabr was trapped in time to „kill“ them . Shin malphur killed „evil guardians“ with his golden gun so they wouldn’t come back .. One can only speculate about why hive ghosts are so fragile.. one reason might be that they don’t seem to have a direct connection to the host .. other explanation could be that they are already in decay and therefore already damaged .. In every case the guardian per se went from near indestructible killing machine to quite fragile but powerful .. (which imho is way better for the story)

Oh you know all we have to do is shoot ghosts down and they go bright
-
It's inconsistent. Between plot armor and the fact you the character is as good as your gameplay. You still killed things relatively easy without light abilities during the red war campaign.

Never mix lore with gameplay

Why “is” would be correct here.

1 ReplyI’ve always wondered why enemies don’t go for our ghosts. We are dead on the ground and the ghost is sitting there. Do they have a shield? Can they only be damaged by a special round like the whole Cayde thing? That trailer shows us reaching out and crushing one. I always imagined there are a lot of dead guardians.

3 RepliesEdited by Speaker: 9/2/2021 9:29:50 PMI've generally noticed lore-wise there is either no mention of how the ghost is destroyed- OR - there is something paracausal at work- the ghost killing bullet; some sort of hive magic; something other than simply a well timed shot from an accelerator weapon. I would assume paracausally- we are as Killable as any paracausal beings are, under the right conditions and with the right tools. I'm a very casual observer of the lore so- I can only provide this anecdotally. If I'm incorrect someone can tell me. If I'm correct we are no more immortal than oryx was.
