Destiny 2 crashing to desktop soon after launch with Exception Code 0xc0000005

UPDATE 2 I have decided to go all in and completely reinstalled the whole operating system. This DID fix the issue. UPDATE The weekly reset did not change anything. The issue persists. I have now also tried first uninstalling BattlEye, then uninstall Destiny, then reboot the PC, install Destiny, and let it reinstall BattlEye. Nothing changed, game keeps crashing the same way, with the same Exception Code. About the issue This has started happening about 3 days ago, noticed it the first time I tried to launch Destiny that day. Everything was working perfectly fine until then, I was able to play the new season without any issues prior to that. Additionally, no updates (Windows, Drivers, anything like that) were done between the time that the game ran fine and the time it started crashing. Description of the issue When I launch the game via Steam, it launches fine. I get to the orbit screen, and about a minute later I crash. No error message, no hang, nothing. The game freezes for a second, and then I crash to desktop. The only trace of the crash is within Windows Event Viewer, an Error entry with the following data:
Faulting application name: bad_module_info, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000 Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00007fff00001f80 Faulting process id: 0x5df8 Faulting application start time: 0x01d79d837b68f136 Faulting application path: bad_module_info Faulting module path: unknown Report Id: bc80094d-a63e-4e08-9d4f-551a337128e7 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:
Fault offset is often around this location, but sometimes it is also 0x0000000000000000. The Exception Code is always 0xc0000005. Troubleshooting steps These are the steps I have taken so far to try to resolve the issue (not necessarily in this order), none of which have yielded any visible improvements: * Verifying game files * Deleting the executables and then verifying the game files to re-download them * Completely reinstalling the game * Disabling Steam Overlay (I don't have any other overlays whatsoever) * Disabling Fullscreen Optimisation * Checking that Ultra Low Latency is disabled in NVidia settings (it was disabled before already) * Checking that I have frames capped (I always have them capped to 30, and all other graphic settings on low) * Running full Disk Health Check * Running full RAM Health Check * Running SFC * Completely reinstalling BattlEye * Make exceptions for BattlEye in the Firewall and Windows Defender * Ensuring that in the Windows Registry "AppInit_DLLs" is set to 0 (it was before) and running a registry cleaner * Closing every single other process running on the computer that is not vital for the system * Updating GPU drivers * Updating all other drivers * Updating Windows * Updating BIOS * Launching Windows in safe mode and trying to launch the game there (BattlEye does not let the game launch at all in this case) * Launching the game in Steam Safe Mode (by specifying "-safe" in the launch options) * Attempted to disable DEP for the destiny2.exe, however "You cannot set DEP attributes on x64 executables" * Naturally also countless reboots of the system Possibly I also did other things, but at this point I do not remember everything anymore. I also do not have a Samsung Drive, and am not using Afterburner, Riva, or any other software like that. Destiny 2 is also the only app that crashes like that. All other software works perfectly fine, no hangs, no crashes. Operating System is also stable. System Info OS: Windows 10 Education, version 20H2, build 19042.1165 CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz 2.21 GHz RAM: 16GB 2667 MHz Disk 1: 256GB SSD Kingston boot drive Disk 2: 1TB HDD Seagate mass storage (game is on this drive) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Motherboard: GL504GM

  • While reinstalling your os, did you wipe everything or kept files?

    • Same problem for me... tried swapping settings, clean install drivers, verify, moving install to a different drive. I am currently on windows 21h1, trying windows updates now even though windows calls them all optional.

    • Same thing. Tried pretty much everything in your list. Game still crashes in 5 or less minutes. Today was small update, issue still persists.

***Update*** This seemed to help me.. GeForce Experience was auto optimizing my game. In doing so, it was turning on DSR in my default Nvidia 3D settings. And it was setting my Destiny video settings to 2X DSR. After resetting my nVidia settings to default, turning off Geforce Experience auto optimizing and then going into D2 and setting my Video settings to my native res 2560x1440 with a resolution scaling to 100 this fixed the crashing. Why give me the ability to run these settings (And default to them) if it will just crash the game? Anyway, hope this helps some of you out there.

        • Issue seems to have resolved, for the time being (knock on wood).

Same for me. I had a few crashes here and there after S15 launched, but today it's crashing every few minutes for me. Doesn't matter if I'm browsing ingame menus, loading into an activity, actually playing an activity or whatever. Unplayable today. Only trace of the crash I found was exactly the event log entry mentioned in OP:
Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: bad_module_info, Version: 0.0.0.0, Zeitstempel: 0x00000000 Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: unknown, Version: 0.0.0.0, Zeitstempel: 0x00000000 Ausnahmecode: 0xc0000005 Fehleroffset: 0x00007ff6617919c3 ID des fehlerhaften Prozesses: 0x1038 Startzeit der fehlerhaften Anwendung: 0x01d79dcaea42a875 Pfad der fehlerhaften Anwendung: bad_module_info Pfad des fehlerhaften Moduls: unknown Berichtskennung: f59446e6-41af-4a4f-be78-ddd5c5cae260 Vollständiger Name des fehlerhaften Pakets: Anwendungs-ID, die relativ zum fehlerhaften Paket ist:
Ran Process Monitor while playing and crashing, but couldn't find anything worth mentioning.

          • Same issue, although I did not run the report. This has happened 4x in a row now. Played several hours yesterday, and even today with no issues at all. Booted up about an hour ago (1:30 PM EST) and now it won't stop crashing. No error codes, just freezes, audio continues, and then CTD. I tried adding battleye as an exception to my firewall, tried capping 60FPS, no good as of yet.

            • I am having the exact same exception code of 0xc0000005 and crashes every 3 minutes in game. I've been playing for hours the past few days with no crashing and after today's small update I'm crashing constantly and can't play.

just lanched destiny 2 after playing a few days no problem in the new season, but have had 5 straight CTD with no error or anything in event veiwer, playing at 1440 maxed settings with a 5950x and a rtx 3090 fe, fps is rocksolid and the game works fine until it freezes and then crashes with no error, tried multiple fixes and settings in game to stop this but the game still crashes, so annoying as yeasterday i was on around 8hrs and nothing was going wrong, so what has bungie done in a night thats made the game unplayable? please look into this asap, i dont want another repete of the amd driver problem that took months to fix, we have a season of content we paid for and would very much like to play it and not loose out. EDIT: to all having problems try running the game in windowed fullscreen mode, i'm in game atm and having no problems with freezing and crashing a solid 53min and everythings working fine

Have the exact same error code and a pretty new high end pc (5600, 3070) etc... What seems to work half of the times is deinstalling Battleye client and reinstalling (using the files in de the Destiny 2 folder in the Battleye folder, then after reboot pc and try and run Destiny 2...) i've had a night with crashes each 3 minutes and full play day. Think it's just Battleye that's unstable and triggers the crash... Doesn't help much but hey... ur not alone and thanks for letting everyone know u tried that many things so we don't have to kinda :-) :P

                • I've just had 3 straight crashes right to the desktop. Never had this happen until this recent update.

                • Same issues as OP. Trying to make D2 content...and constant CTDs is stopping that.

                • I'm having a worse issue. I log in, get to a destination then crash. The audio continues to play, but I can't do anything else. This has been going on for 10 days now—I missed out on fully completing last season's Triumphs, and my OCD is getting unmanageable because of this. I can't bring up the Task Manager either, so every time it happens I'm forced to do a hard boot down.
