Today, I must lie on the floor for several hours in response to one of my famous headaches, so I decided to waste an hour ranking old PBS Kids shows from my childhood, with regards to the online games as well. Enjoy or don’t.
Curious George: I may have only watched this show as a 3-4 year old, but I hated it. The color pallet makes me want to hurl. The way the characters all speak monotonously is like taking a hammer to the brain. The biggest issue? My brother liked it, so we watched it all the damn time. And as I got older but younger siblings continued to enjoy it, I realize the lack of justice within George’s world. Every episode follows the formula of: George does some dumb antic that ruins everyone’s day -> George gets other people to help him fix it -> George receives praise for the solving of his own stupidity -> George learns nothing. I liked the books much better, they were always such a trip. My personal favorite was the one where George tries to write a letter, floods the house, steals a cow and a water pump, gets arrested, and goes to space. Whereas in the show he is an annoying piece of garbage and I hate him. The jazz piano background music is like purgatory. The online games were boring as hell too. 2/10
Cyberchase: This show slapped. The character design was original and popped. The plot was fast paced and easy to get invested in, but the real gem was the online game. Cyberchase: The Quest. I poured hours into this game, it fascinated me. You are trying to save Motherboard by collected a list of special items around Cyberspace. You can buy them with Snelfus, money you’ve collected by playing games and completing tasks. You also have a home to customize with furniture and decorations you’ve bought. Looking back, it isn’t the most exciting of games, but it certainly hit the mark with me. It was spectacular to play. I might just have to try it again, see if it lives up to my memory. 7/10 but only because I remember the games more fondly than the show.
Martha Speaks: Boring. Entirely boring. Color pallet, character design, even the concept which made the show what it was. Just entirely lacking in creativity or captivating elements. Martha is a dog, who talks. I can literally remember no other attributes of the show that stand out. Online games sucked too. 1/10
The Ruff Ruffman Show: Quality children’s entertainment. It was educational, full of great jokes but not an overabundance, and had some fun online games as well. I kicked -blam!- in the Geyser Building Game. Perfect for a variety of ages. 7/10
Dinosaur Train: I despised the character design. I’ve always hated it. The characters themselves were pretty boring too. Not a whole lot of flavor there. But as a wee child I had a captivating interest in Dinosaurs, and this timetraveling train with an annoying ticketmaster was highly stocked with dinosaur facts. That was enough to stick around for. The online games were terrible. Just cheap, no inspiration. 4/10
Zoboomafoo: I don’t have enough praise for this show. The Kratt brothers were fun, puppet version of Zoboomafoo creeped everyone out just a little bit, and the guest animals were fascinating. As a very tiny child I was running around spouting animal facts I had learned from Zoboomafoo that morning. Sadly, this show ended before I was even born. I was stuck with reruns of the same episodes for years. That was alright with me, I would’ve been content watching the elephant episode until the end of time. I don’t know that Zoboomafoo had any online games, and if they did I never played them. 9/10
Wild Kratts: With the death of Zoboomafoo arose another opportunity for the Kratt brothers to teach me enough fun facts to last every family road trip. An animated series lacking in a lot of explanation. Who are these two guys? Why do they have an animal protection task force and the remarkably advanced technology that they do? Why is there a stoner on the task force? Why do the villains face no real justice for endangering the lives of protected animals? I loved this show, again, mostly for the educational part because I was an animal nerd. I used to read through animal kingdom encyclopedias in my spare time. The online games were also exceptionally fun, Cheetah Racer being the crown jewel. 8/10
Electric Company: You’ve probably never heard of this show and the reason being was it sucked. It was a lame attempt to cash in on the market Nickelodeon had a handle on: live actors. The premise of the show was there is a group of teenagers with the magic ability to make words appear using Word Balls that form in their hands. It was meant to be educational, but I refused to learn anything from this stupid bs. I never touched the online games. 2/10
Word World: Yet another show that you probably avoided. A series that follows a group of animals made from words, who can create objects using the words needed to spell them. Not the most ambitious concept, but extra points because it taught me the first word I could ever spell. Rock. I was 3, watching the show with a piece of paper in front of me so I could spell the words they used onscreen. I remember my mom being genuinely impressed. The games were okay, I really only remember the one where you go to Dogs house, and he had a bigass ball pit. That was sick. 6/10
The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That: An insult to the book. This show was a disappointment in every way. Terrible. 0/10
Clifford: Not a show for me. I can still hear Emily Elizabeth’s shrill call of Cliffords name, it knocks around in the back of my head. I liked that one girl who was a straight up a-hole to everyone. Games sucked tho. 3/10
Editing in some shows you’ve reminded me of
Dinosaur Tales: I don’t remember a whole lot from this show, mostly character designs. I do remember it was always on during the time of the day when PBS had TV for blind kids, and there was a voice narrating everything you saw onscreen as it happened. It bothered me greatly, so I mostly remember being pissed at Dinosaur Tales. I do remember an episode with a coin toss, and the coin used had an actual dinosaur head and tail on it. I was jealous that they got to use “real” coins and us humans couldn’t. Don’t remember any games. 4/10
Barney: With a little brother who ALWAYS got to choose what we watched, I endured a lot of Barney. I didn’t like Barney, his voice pissed me off. And like most shows I watched, I thought way too hard about them, and I couldn’t get over the fact that giant Barney was imaginary, and in “real life” these stupidass kids were talking to a stuffed animal. Games were okay, difficult to remember. 3/10
Super Why: As I stated in a below reply, I didn’t like Super Why. My parents read me old fairy tales in all their gruesomeness. Stories of murder and kidnappings, betrayal and war, were modernized and made “child friendly” by Super Why. Not only that, the main characters missions were to infiltrate these tragic stories and give them happy endings, which in my mind ruined them. Do not remember a single online game. 2/10
Mr Rogers Neighborhood: Honestly, I don’t remember the show in a flattering light. I know if from when Mr Rogers was quite old, and by this time I was far too young to be the target audience. I didn’t understand when he talked, I don’t even think I knew there was more than one episode because the set never changed. I remember feeding the fish, the theme song, and a segment where he goes to a pediatrics appointment with a young girl to teach us not to be afraid of shots. I really didn’t get the show and couldn’t appreciate it at the time. I liked the games because they were mostly meaningless. There was one where I think you put Daniel Tiger to bed, it might’ve been some other puppet. There was no end to the game of tasks that needed completing, you just interacted with his room. Turning lights on and off and giving him a teddy bear. I liked that as a bebe. 4/10
Word Girl: She pissed me OFF her and that stupidass monkey. I hated her with every ounce of my being. 0/10 no idea why
Arthur: He was such a piece of garbage. Everyone in this show was in a constant state of violence. They were snots. I remember my sister saying something remarkably mean to me, I cried I was so hurt. When my mom asked why, my sis confessed she heard it from Arthur and thought it would’ve been funny to make me cry. Since then Arthur was banned from the house. The only game I remember was the cafeteria one, which was supposed to be a learning experience about vitamins and protein but I cheated and learned nothing. 1/10
Seeing as how I was but a child, I’m sure I’ve forgotten a fair number of shows I used to watch. If I remember I’ll add more, but for now, my opinion is law.
Side note I would curbstomp that rat Hooper without a second thought

2 RepliesZoboomafoo was S tier and nobody can change my mind.
-
2 RepliesI don’t know any of those. Biker Mice From Mars Street Sharks The Sylvester and Tweety Mysteries Mummies Alive Gargoyles Dose were muh jams
-
1 ReplyMost of those shows I never heard of. Clifford’s an oldie, though, with the dumbest and most random premise for a kid’s story… I’d like to know how they realistically feed that dog and pick up its poo. As for Curious George, I just remember my former anthropology professor ranting about how George is a damn ape, not a monkey.

6 RepliesReading Rainbow 3 2 1 Contact Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego I believe Fraggel rock was on there too Zoobilee Zoo

Edited by The First Aifos: 8/31/2021 12:08:59 AMThe only two shows I remember watching on PBS were Arthur and Cyberchase. I’m sure I watched more, but they’ve slipped from my mind. As far as those two shows were concerned, I remember loving them both, though I couldn’t tell you too many specifics about what I liked. I do remember thinking it was really weird how the baby in Arthur could talk to the dog, though. Like, as soon as babies learn to talk they forget how to talk to animals, apparently. Edit: And Dragon Tales. I loved Dragon Tales.

The Letter people.

Cyberchase, Zoboomafoo, and to an extent Wild Kratts are valued staples of my childhood

Sadly, this show ended before I was even born.
So you were born after 2001. which means you're barely 20... ...Don't ever -blam!- tell me what to do again, you pipsqueak millennial... Also I agree- Zoboomafoo was a great show- The actual lemur they used just died in 2014. lived a decently happy life from what I hear. And the Kratts show spinoff just never caught the same magic again. But still entertaining.

Edited by Fred-7 (Supreme): 8/31/2021 5:09:19 PMMy dad and his brother grew up watching the electric company.
licks finger
On the occasions I had electricity as a kid, I lived on PBS. Wish I watched more Mr. Rogers in retrospect. Since we're going down memory lane, I'll also throw out: - Sagwa, the Chinese Siamese Cat - Liberty's Kids - Between the Lions These were a little past my time, but when you have like 3 channels to choose from, you take what you can get.
-
4 RepliesI thought Electric Company pre-dated Nickelodeon, since it was originally on in the 70's. Polkadot Door Reading Rainbow 3 2 1 Contact Mr. Rogers

Dinosaur train and clifford the book Some of the best parts of life

Lamb Chops Barney

Not a bad list

1 ReplyIf you don't remember Between the Lions you aren't a real PBS fan.

I cannot stress how often people say they never heard of Zoboomafoo when we talk about childhood shows.

1 ReplyEdited by Sumpig-2: 8/30/2021 8:05:12 PMCurious George:i just remembered the movie. Nice, nostalgic, but meh. Cyberchase: never watched but keep hearing about it Martha Speaks: only played the PBS kids game in the website when it was still there The Ruff Ruffman Show: never watched only played the game same as above Dinosaur Train: frickin ugly characters, only played the game Zoboomafoo: honestly don't remember if I watched this but if it's got a lemur then I saw a few episodes, p neat Wild Kratts: same as above Electric Company: heard of it two years ago, never watched Word World: i liked this one a bit. Certainly interesting. The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That: dunno bout this, probably two episodes some day Clifford: watched a bit of this, can only remember that there were more than just one dog in the show, and that the movie is not similar at all besides having a girl named Elizabeth and a not-as-big red dog of the wrong breed named Clifford Now a PBS Kids show of my own: Dragon Tales: I liked the art and show personally, music maybe. I remember some of it, but it's been so long, I just remember the fact it was one of my favorites.
Word Girl was okay-ish. Saw an episode, but I don't think I would watch more
Bonus round Legend of Nezha: Chinese cartoon series that I watched when I was... idk, 1-3y/o?, pretty good. Didn't know who Nezha was as a kid so for some time I thought it was a girl, but no he's a boy. The music is good, the Chinese really do like trumpets and horns tho. Decent animation for that time, and characters were nice. Villains either got or ugly to the pint if comical but physically impossibly, as all villains are. If only it weren't all in Chinese... literally had to piece things through context and what my mom translated.
not everything I watched. Just some I liked
2 RepliesYou forgot about Caiou. 10/10 show. Loved it
jk,-100/10 show. I f*cking loathed the show. Even when I was little(like 5 years old) I knew that Caiou was a bunch of nonsense. The show starred a 4 year old kid, that whined all the time, and taught kids that you have to do anything to get your way. Which was to cry, alot. It taught me nothing. And Caiou can die in a hole. Thank you for coming to my rant. Have a nice day.
Edited by Ghost Rider: 8/31/2021 7:26:09 AMFetch with Ruff Ruffman was THE show of my youth. The usual after-school lineup was Wild Kratts, followed by Word Girl, Arthur (🤢), and then the Electric Company. Arthur excluded, I will to this day watch episodes of all those shows to evoke nostalgia. You've listed 'em, I love 'em.
Sorry, all out of salt.
1 ReplyThe Kratt brothers are secret gods sent to earth. Change my mind. Also, I thought for a few seconds you were talking about the old Jim Henson Dr. Seuss show, and I was about to report this for excessive -blam!-.

1 ReplyEdited by Ion, Disciple of Melvin: 8/31/2021 12:05:55 AMAll the Fetch games on the PBS website were amazing.
Too bad the finally scared me as a child
Between the op and the responses this was a pretty dope nostalgia trip.

1 ReplyIf anyone mentioned Zoom, I missed it.

3 RepliesYour list makes me feel old. I grew up in the 1980’s, so these were my shows: Mr Rogers’ Neighbourhood. Reading Rainbow. Square One. Bill Nye The Science Guy. Shining Time Station. 3-2-1 Contact. Where In the World is Carmen Sandiego. I also could have sworn that I remember watching Fraggle Rock on PBS when I was younger. But according to Google, it never aired on PBS.

3 RepliesEdited by Gingiebread: 8/31/2021 5:47:19 AMMan, I remember getting so excited to watch Wild Kratts. It was my favorite show and I learned about animals I never knew existed. I see what you mean about the lack of origin story and stuff (I vaguely remember even questioning why the bad guys never really got caught), but I don’t think little kids really care enough about that. It was just fun… heck, I had dreams at night of having a power suit, lolol. And oh my goodness, I played the heck out of that Cheetah Racer game! Was my favorite one on that whole site! Cyberchase was awesome too, though I never absorbed any of the math lessons they taught. O.o

1 ReplyYou forgot about Super Why, our one true god who has the limitless power to read.
