Eris morn named after Greek goddess!

I just now figured this out, that eris morn could be named after the Greek goddess of the same name who was interestingly enough the Greek goddess of strife and discord. I posted something similar about Oryx and a HP Lovecraft God of the same name a couple months ago. Very interesting that bungie likes to pull from various mythos and mythology

  • There are plenty of mythology references. Here are a few I know off the top of my head: Cerberus +1 - 3 headed dog. So Cerberus +1 means 4 headed dog Orpheus rigs - he looked back and his wife died. There is a harp symbol on the legs (Orpheus was a musician) Antaeus wards - Antaeus got his power from the ground. When you slide, you get a shield hence power from the ground. Of course you have Minotaurs and harpies and whatnot.

There are some interesting links between Oryx and the mythological hero Gilgamesh. The original language in which The Epic of Gilgamesh was written is Akkadian and one of the nearby cities to its setting in ancient Mesopotamia is Ur, both quite evidently being related to the Worm Gods. In the story, Gilgamesh was an all-powerful king who is oppressing his people. Some translations refer to him as "He who saw the Deep", which is very similar to how Destiny's lore refers to Oryx "communing with the Deep". The Gods create a primitive man, Enkidu, who is equal in strength to Gilgamesh, and his ultimate task is to stop Gilgamesh's oppression. After he has learned the ways of man and become civilised, he confronts Gilgamesh over his rule and they battle. Gilgamesh is victorious, but the two become friends and have a mutual respect for each other's might. They go on some adventures together, but the Gods kill Enkidu as punishment for killing a divine creature during one such adventure. Gilgamesh is distraught and chooses to undertake a journey in order to find eternal life, but he eventually learns that he will never find it. However, his legacy is so great that he is never truly forgotten, and he posthumously finds a classical interpretation of what immortality is. As a parallel to this, we Guardians can be seen to represent Enkidu in a way. We were created by what might as well be a God and eventually clash with Oryx. They differ in that we defeated Oryx, but as a result, he attained eternal life by being immortalised in the Touch of Malice. Oryx knew he could only be defeated by something that lived by the same principles that he did. Throughout the creation of Touch of Malice, we find the Calcified Fragments, which detail the history of the Hive and of Oryx himself. In a sense, we inherited his legacy. Oryx acknowledged our strength and wanted us to succeed him as something more powerful than he was (but we refused the offer). Hope this was interesting for you to read :D

      • I believe that they may have pulled the name straight from one of our system's centaurs and found the connection afterwards, but it's likely that it is from the Greek Goddess.

Cool, I always thought she was called Eris Morn because she mourns for her lost friends
