Second Verse, Same as the First: Hunters are a Worthless PVE Class, an Open Letter to Hunter Players

I am a divorced hunter main. I jumped ship shortly after this season onto a real class that actually contributes to a team, a titan. I posted this rant on the forums at the start of this season after the debacle with Star-Eaters Scales in desperate hope that Bungie would hear the multitude issues I and many others have with the state of PVE hunters. It wasn't an attack on Bungie's balancing decisions, but a plea: Give hunters something a team NEEDS them for. Clearly this was either not heard or outright ignored because the past 2 TWABs have shown nothing will change for them. This is no longer a plea, but a warning to any and all current and prospective hunter mains. Hunters are, and will remain, worthless members of an endgame PVE team. Let me filter out some commentors and repeat that for those at the back, not paying attention. Hunters are, and will remain, worthless members of an ENDGAME PVE team. I do not care how hunters' performance is in PVP. I rarely play it unless necessary, to save my own sanity. Don't bother trying to use that as an argument. I do not care how hunters play in solo content, that's the point of the class. Loners. Save the energy and comment elsewhere because I'm ignoring it. Take a look at LFG posts for GMs, raids. Wanna know what you see on nearly every one? Must be Shadebinder, Well, Geomags, or Cuirass. Bring even a remotely well equipped titan or warlock and you've got a place on the team with support or damage. No one wants a hunter on their team because they don't pull their weight. The player might be just fine, perfectly knowledgeable on the activity to be done, and still drag the team down because their class's kit simply cannot compete. The only time a hunter is a remotely required member of the team is for Omnioculus invis, and a lot times that's simply just to skip through a section that would normally be a prolonged fight. You try and bring Nighthawk? Your presence is simply worth less than a titan bringing Cuirass. You try and bring Orpheus, or Revenant? You're worth less than a Shadebinder. You shouldn't want to be a consolation prize to your team. You shouldn't be worth less because the class you bring simply doesn't have the kit to compete with the alternatives. Bungie has shown undeniably that they disagree with these assertions. Nighthawk remains an objectively worse option than Cuirass for burst Super DPS. Top tree Nightstalker and Revenant remain objectively worse options than Shadebinder. Arc staff is still worthless for endgame content. But hey, at least the burn on Fan of Knives lasts an additional second! At least Bombardiers burns enemies now! Stay away from Hunters, play a real class.

  • My name is Darkwireman. I'm 32 years old. My apartment is in the Southwest section of The Last City, where all the Eliksni are, and I am not married. I work as a Guardian for Hire, and I get home every day by 10 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 2 AM, and make sure I get 5 hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a cup of Mountain Dew and doing about five rounds of Gambit before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any rest or peace in the morning. I was told there were several issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life, unburdened by the arguments between Guardian classes. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose additional sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me...something approaching happiness. Although, if I were to fight...I wouldn't lose to anyone...who didn't crutch cheap abilities or weapons...

I think this is a bit hyperbolic, or not just a bit, very hyperbolic. Like this, "The player might be just fine, perfectly knowledgeable on the activity to be done, and still drag the team down because their class's kit simply cannot compete.", I completely disagree with this. To directly address that comment: Then why do I, on hunter, manage to get the most kills of anyone in raids many times that I run them and produce as much as or more damage on bosses in raids? Why can I do GMs on hunter and get more kills than a titan or warlock on a regular basis, too? And generate more orbs, earn more score? Surely I'm not "dragging my team down" by being a Hunter. Yes, Hunters do not contribute as much "neutral ability value" to a fireteam. They do not have a Rift, turrets that freeze enemies, a legendary sword that does more damage than many exotics, or any of a variety of sustained buff effect supers. You can't just throw down a barrier or whatever and say, "hey, I'm contributing!". That is not how the class is designed or meant to be played. However, that is completely disregarding what they can bring: Void hunters are the only class in the game capable of providing a fireteam with stealth. This is a significant boon to have in endgame content. It can trivialize some content people do on the regular, like skipping certain parts of dungeons easily or guaranteeing the "Chad walk" in VOG or simply using the utility in general to be able to engage with raid mechanics freely. This obviously isn't everything having an instant on-demand stealth buff can provide. Void hunters also provide capped stats through Heart of the Pack if you choose bottom tree, and heavy damage resistance with Omnioculus. Void hunters are also the only class in the game with an incoming damage debuff that is not tied to a seasonal mod or specific weapon. Deadfall provides a damage debuff equivalent to Divinity and stacks with buffs like Well or Ward. With Orpheus Rigs, Deadfall can be used on a near-loop, as well. Again, with Void hunter, tons of orb generation with Deadfall or Moebius Quiver. Providing Ursa Furiosa-levels of orbs, if not more. Something only Ursa can more or less match. Stasis hunter is a fantastic vehicle for certain things in GMs, like running Aeon Swift to provide ammo for your team and safely maneuvering for the finishers. Hunter's dodge ability actually allows you to get into and do things you wouldn't be able to do as reliably on other classes simply because it's an instant button to cover a ton of ground. The Revenant super is extremely useful in endgame content, firmly more flexible than a Behemoth titan and much more safe to use. Only Shadebinder has a better PVE super in Stasis and that's only because it has potential to last slightly longer and can be controlled directly. Solar hunter has the highest burst damage in the entire game with a fully charged Star-Eater Scales and Golden Gun precision damage. No other class can produce as much instant damage. A fully charged Star-Eater Golden Gun can nearly single-handedly push an entire Shuro Chi phase. Solar hunter with Blade Barrage and Shards of Galanor can deal an extremely high amount of damage to Atheon, competitive with other grenades builds out there and exceeding the damage of things like Chaos Rush with Geomags. Solar hunter with Young Ahamkara's Spine and tripmine grenades has some of the highest DPS on Atheon, along with Titan and Warlock's fusion grenade builds. Hunter is very desirable in VOG and a variety of other endgame content for relic running and handling many mobility-intensive mechanics. Anyways... I could go on with all sorts of other things there are, but you get the picture... The proof of a class's strength is in the player's ability to handle it. Period. It doesn't matter if you're on a hunter or not. Stop with this myth that hunters are "useless" in PVE. Start adapting to situations and using the tools you have available to you instead of trying to play Hunter like a Titan or Warlock.

      • Oh, did you just go down in a Grandmaster Nightfall? Let me pop a smoke and comfortably dilly dally and then come revive you safe from any enemies. Oh you want to be invisible too? Sure! Let me throw a smoke grenade and we'll BOTH be invisible

        • Disagree. Just because they are not considered absolute top tier does not make them worthless or unable to compete. They can do damage fine, add control and damage buff fine, and the only class to pull off invisible shenanigans for team or reviving. Should there not be OP seasonal mods again (doubtful) I think they will come in to favor more.

        • Nah the community can just me a bit of a pain in terms of min-maxing and just sleep on Hunters. For example, there’s not much difference between Celestial and Cuirass damage, yet all we see are requests for Cuirass. I just ran a Flawless VoG, and you want to know what we had? 4 Warlocks and 2 Hunter. Because it turns out that the class is a rather nice choice when you can’t use a slam Titan out of fear of breaking your back on the top of a portal during an Atheon damage phase

          • Not sure if this post is meant to be satirical or serious. If it’s the latter, the OP needs to pull their head out of their backside. It wasn’t too long ago that Hunters were desperately needed for a variety of PvE activities. Orpheus Rigs were a must before it was nerfed into the ground. Celestial nighthawk was tops for DPS until guiding missile and chaos reach came around.

            • I've never understood posts like this. Hunters are mega viable in GMs/raids. I play all three classes. I have ran more than enough GMs on Hunter as all 4 sub classes. I truly and genuinely have know idea why people think they sick in PvE.
Warlock main btw
• Here are my takeaways from this post: You're either: 1. Salty about constantly being killed by Hunters in PvP. 2. Salty because you're not good on a Hunter (which is fine, everyone has their preference). 3. Jealous that Hunters only have Dodge while Titans have Barriers and Warlocks have Rifts (I've actually found Dodge to be really useful in PvE, especially when coupled with Bombardiers or Sixth Coyote). Or Number 4: All of the above.

              • Bottom tree void. Aeon Swift’s. Some charged with light and finisher mods. The ultimate ammo support class and one you can play hyper aggressive in GM’s when every else is playing passive.

              • the bombardiers buff actually looks good, omnioculus is amazing, graviton forfeit is decent and its getting buffed, nighthawk, despite doing less damage than cuirass, is pretty good, revenant is decent for ad clear and slowing, blade barrage can be alright, and the shards buff will help, and although this post is about pve, I'm going to mention that hunters are the best for pvp, outside of top tree dawn, which is getting nerfed next season

                • They need to buff Shadowshot's debuff, Blade Barrage's accuracy, increase Nighthawk's damage (may be safer/ faster than Falling Star and Chaos, but worthless if you don't land a crit, and some enemies like the Vex have funny hit boxes). One can argue Scales helps, but it takes forever to make it a good pick, especially if you're looking to combine it with Knock'em Down 20 seconds and GG.

                • Would help if they didn’t make functionally every super a roaming super for it. Arc? Roaming super. Solar? Roaming super but with range. Void? Stationary super with no damage to speak of. Stasis? Ai controlled roaming super. Bungie created a system where burst damage is king and hunter lacks all forms of it with only nighthawk somewhat closing that gap but requiring higher skill to not miss crit(if boss has a crit at all). I play all 3 and imo only use a hunter has now is omniculus and all supers are bad in endgame. Everything a hunter super can do something else’s can do better and this is reinforced by the seasonal debuff mods/divinity being easy alternatives to void super for debuffs with no super required. Hunter is trash in pve and needs its next super to be a burst damage one and done super not a roaming super and not an ai controlled roaming super and also not whatever weaksauce damage blade barrage is. Whatever they do I hope it at least does same damage as top tree nova in a single throw without that casting throw crap that something like blade barrage has. Titan could honestly use one of these as well since main thing it has is that singular exotic for its middle tree arc for damage otherwise you are delegated to bubble.

I too, am a divorced hunter main. I had a taste of Thundercrash and...it was more satisfying than anything I've done as a hunter, save for one moment in Destiny 1. I was a hunter since the d1 beta... It feels wrong, but so very right. Falling Star and Thundercrash just scratch a itch that I didn't know existed. The itch of having a useful AND fun super! I always thought my first GM would be with my hunter...it...was with my titan. I got tired of being a burden, of having absolutely trash supers. I'm a titan main now, and I'm just loving this power. Hell, my first 6k in Crucible was with thundercrash.

                  • From hunter to Titan and not warlock , now that’s a real downgrade. I agree with you from a pve stand point, I feel like bungie is just making hunters a pvp class mainly. And even if you don’t play it, it is a big part of the game and player base. Destiny without any part of pvp or pve wouldn’t be the same. I loathe how bungie always over powers Titans for every activity in the game but that’s just Destiny. Hey maybe I’ll chew on some crayons next season.😔
