Corruption
This is part of my “What If” series. I will change different moments in Destiny history so they turn out…a little different so to speak
“It’s known that a Guardian can turn to the Darkness. Rezzyl Azzir {probably butchered that sorry} and all of his wannabe followers are a prime example of this. I just never could’ve imagined that it was my best friend who would be tempted by the Darkness.” “As a Guardian, it’s hard to make friends. You find a mortal friend, they die. You find a Guardian friend, they leave you for another Fireteam. That’s not the case for me. I was patrolling Luna when I met my soon to be best friend. I was at Archer’s Line when I saw a lone Guardian fighting a large group of Hive. While it looked like he could handle himself, I decided to go over and give him a hand. We quickly finished off the group of Hive and he thanked me for the help. Right away, I knew there was something different about this Guardian. That’s when he introduced himself and I realized he was The Guardian. This man has done everything imaginable. Saved the City during the Red War, stopped the Vex from destroying the Sol System, killed a Hive worm god, and just recently avenged Cayde and opened the Dreaming City. This guy was a living legend, and I was standing 5 feet away from him. I was about to most likely embarrass myself when thankfully a warsat crashed. We defended that and got the info we needed. He then asked if I wanted to help him with some Strikes sometime in the near future. I happily obliged and told him I would see him soon.” “That’s what started my friendship with the Guardian. We mostly did Vanguard Ops but also messed around in the Crucible. When the Drifter showed up with his new “activity,” that’s when it started going downhill. All of a sudden, my friend wanted to do more and more Gambit and less and less Strikes. I personally wasn’t a fan of Gambit, but he seemed to enjoy it so I was fine with it. We kinda went out separate ways for a bit. Next thing you know, he shows up with the dreaded Thorn in his hand. Says he found it with a note attached to it saying he was worthy to wield Thorn. He wanted to try out his new gun in the Crucible, so I agreed happy that he was taking a break from Gambit. The way he played those few matches was different from what I remember. He seemed more aggressive and showed no mercy. It quite frankly scared me. After that, he thanked me and said he was going to play more Gambit.” “Fast forward a year, and a Pyramid shows up on Luna. Of course, being the Guardian, he had to do something about it. He invited me to tag along. We quickly dispatched Hashladun {again butchered the name, so don’t @ me} and stopped the Hive from harnessing any power from this Pyramid. My friend says he needs to check something out at the Pyramid, so I follow him to make sure he is ok. I’m not a big fan of the Pyramid (it gives me the creeps) but he seemed very interested. He had on a full set of special Darkness repelling armor given to him by Eris. All of a sudden, the Pyramid sucked him up. I had no clue what had happened to him. 20 minutes later, he shows up unscathed. He did seem different though, like he had seen something.” “About another year goes by. More Pyramids show up and the Vanguard is scrambling to figure out what this means. My friend and I are working for Eris and the Drifter full time now trying to discover what the Pyramids want. He wants to understand the Darkness, the Drifter wants to wield the Darkness, Eris wants to decipher the Darkness, and I just want it to be over. Next thing you know, the Traveller heals itself, but we also lost 4 of the planets.” “That’s when things really started to get worse. A message pops up on Europa and we have to go answer it. All of a sudden, the Stranger is here advocating for the usage of the Darkness. My friend is all for this and starts harnessing the power of the Darkness. He seems to be getting more and more corrupt. I try to tell him that this isn’t good, but he shoves me off. He says that I’m jealous because I’m “not good enough” for the Darkness. The truth is, I never wanted to use the Darkness and never will. Will kill all of Eramis’s lieutenants and finally find her. We were doing fine, until she decided to freeze us. I look over and see the Guardian breaking out of the Stasis crystal and take on Eramis 1 on 1. The anger coming off of him is too much at this point. He quickly defeats Eramis when the Darkness decides she isn’t worth enough. She started to freeze over when the Guardian decides to do the unthinkable. I thought he would let her meet her own demise, but I was wrong. He pulls out a rocket launcher and finishes Eramis before the Darkness can. He breaks me out of the Stasis crystal and leaves me there to see the aftermath of the battle. I didn’t know that would be the last I saw him.” “I woke up this morning to see the Guardian’s Ghost floating above my head. I asked him where my friend was, but he told me that he didn’t know. I asked him why and he said that his Guardian had rejected the Light and decided to live in Darkness. I realized that this was the same way that Dredgen Yor had become as infamous as he was (and still is). I was mad at myself for not trying harder to stop him. I was mad at the Guardian for choosing to go down this path. That’s when I heard the whisper in my ear. Something about salvation….”
