Dont understand why pinnacle/xp levelling is a speedbump towards endgame content

With the details about master vog coming out in this twab I feel like we need to talk about levelling as a speedbump towards endgame content. Master raids and GM nightfalls are clearly meant to be, by design, ultimate tests of skill. They are supposed to put the best of the best to the test in terms of build quality, teamwork and coordination, and individual skill. And yet, these activities require a ton of levelling to be able to access. The amount you are able to level, however, is not an indicator of skill, it is simply an indicator of how much you grind the game, and yet playing the game nonstop and getting to 1340 or above clearly allows you to trivialize master vog because the enemies are 1350 with no cap put on your power level. I have close to 100 hours played this season, I am 1319 with +16 on the artifact which is pretty high and it is enough to do master raids (it is 20 below the enemy level which is how it is on contest day, so I consider it to be enough) and it passes the power cap on GMs but just barely. You should NOT have to play this much to have access to the hard activities because it is supposed to be a test of skill, not grind. As a personal example of grind being completely non indicative and having no correlation to skill: Out of the 6 people on my raid team, 4 of them only play the game AT ALL for day 1 raid day. They get back into the game a couple weeks before the raid comes out, do the raid on day 1, maybe do reset raids for a couple weeks until it gets boring and then they dont play the game for months until a new raid is out again. Rinse and repeat. Day 1 raid is the only thing worth playing the game for in their eyes; it is the pinnacle of the destiny experience and nothing else is enjoyable enough to play. And yet, they are some of the most skilled raiders I have ever played with. I wasnt with them for deep stone but they were in the top 500 teams to finish, and when we did vog we almost were in the first 300 to beat contest mode. We did day 1 vog and most of my team has not played the game since, because why would they? Now master vog is around the corner and even though we have the skills and teamwork to beat it with ease, they are a hundred hours or more behind on levelling so they cant play. Even though I know without a doubt that they are better players than anyone who plays the game 10 hours a day and is overlevelled for master vog because they enjoy XP farming. This game is fun when it is challenging, but the ultimate challenges are ruined by speedbumps that require you to invest hundreds of hours into the game every season before you even have the opportunity to take on the challenges and show off your skills. This is not good by design. Not only does it ruin things for hardcore players who live for the challenge but dont have it in them to grind out power level, but it ruins things for casuals too, who feel like they will never even have the chance to participate in the endgame challenges because not only do they lack the skill, but they also lack the willingness and time to play the game enough to even launch the activity. It is a huge turn off for everyone. TL;DR You should not have an easy street ticket through endgame content because you play the game more than someone else. Things like GMs and master dungeons/raids should be tests of skill, not raw time investment and hamster wheel grinding. The hardest activities in the game should cap your power at something extremely low and easily accessible, like contest day raids, so that the only thing holding your team back is skill.

  • Personally, I have always enjoyed the levelling up aspect to Destiny and it's basically why I've played it since day one It's what I look forward to most at the start of each season, and of course, collecting the loot. However, my passion for the game, and my gaming hours have been reduced over the past few seasons for several reasons. For starters, I have noticed that no matter what power level I achieve, it has very little bearing on the activities, hell, I can still die in a regular lost sector or regular strike, when I feel like I should be walking through it and one shotting the boss. Secondly, I feel the game is more fireteam orientated , and solo players have little or no chance of getting top end loot. I could grind to 1400 power level, but I'll never be able to solo a raid, GM nightfall, or flawless in trials. And these activities are where the best loot can be earned. Yes, I've been in clans and tried LFG, both have their good and bad points, but I mainly play solo now and so once I hit max power, the season is basically over for me. It doesn't bother me anymore that I'm missing weapons and armour that I'm never going to get anyway. While I agree with the OP, I just thought I'd add a comment for the single players out there.
