Think it's more of a Destiny problem. You also can't click on "View Gamercard" of people you've matched with but are no longer in the same lobby/instance of, like after finishing a Crucible match and then leaving the queue afterwards. My guess is that it has something to do with them setting up the foundation for crossplay. Although the people you're in a premade fireteam will show up in recent players for D2.
