I'm interested in knowing why old sublcasses like warlock self res and hunter blade dancer are no longer in the game other than the fact that they are broken and Bungie wanted more balance.
Like if we really think about it. What lore implications does this have when gaul took the light from the guardians ? Does this mean all self res sunsinger warlocks and arc bladedancer hunters lost their subclass abilities ??
Will they have potential to be reworked into the game ??
I need answers *insert Charlie Day meme*

1 ReplyI know it’s not a lore reason, but… self res broke a lot of shit and was an absolute crutch.

7 RepliesI've actually got some leads on that. Canonically, Bladedancers, Sunsingers, and Defenders still exist, it's just that the players' Guardians just don't use or hve access to those branches of power anymore. Bladedancers are directly mentioned in the Nightstalker lore tab, and Sunsingers are directly mentioned in the Stormcaller lore tab, so we know for a fact they weren't just retconned or siwtched out; the in-game universe is perfectly aware of their existence (as for Defenders, I can't remember where, but I do know there's a lore piece from Shadowkeep with a quote going something like "Defenders, erect Wards upon entry"). Let me explain. In the Arcstrider lore tab it's mentioned that Arcstriders first popped up during the dark ages, and as we're all aware, it was a time when classes didn't exist. This means that the art of being an Arcstrider is likely one of the first consistent practices of light usage in Destiny's universe. Arcstriders themselves predate the term "Guardian", so that's pretty old. So why, when we got our light restored, did we get a power from so far back in the past? The answer is simple: we got our Light back from a SHARD of the travller, not the whole thing. My theory is that the shard didn't have the more "modernized" iteration of Arc, Solar, and Void powers for Hunters, Warlocks, and Titans respectively. if the traveller didn't split into pieces during Ghaul's assault, and if we somehow managed to get our light back from the whole thing instead of just a shard, I'm pretty sure we might have gotten the old subclasses back instead of the new ones. Now you might be thinking, "what about Sentinel? That subclass seems like an upgrade from Defender rather than something that came before it." You're exactly right, it does. But think about this: if Sentinel comes from the Dark Ages, having a split focus between offense and defense (being able to use Sentinel Shield and Ward of Dawn) makes a lot more sense when considering the Risen using it wouldn't have the intention of protecting the city. My theory here is that Sentinels came first, but after Titans became more focused on defending the city, they put more focus into their defensive Void powers, thus turning the Sentinel in the Defender. Once the coty was destroyed, and we were put into a position to strike rather than defend, the Traveller gave Titans their older void powers that could be used for offense. Dawnblade? I don't know about that one. I haven't found anything pertaining as to how a Dawnblade decided to practice self-resurrection at the cost of losing their sword.

well blade dancer and arc strider are the exact same thing with small differences, why theres no longer a self rez warlock, that should be self explainng

They still exist. But now most guardians use the new ones. I think they are separate from the D2 subclasses. So if you only ever use Ward of Dawn, like Zavala, than you are a defender. But if you use Sentinel Shield and possibly sometimes Ward of Dawn, like Saint XIV, than you are a sentinel. Same for sun singers with Well of Radiance and Daybreak. Blade dancers are entirely kept separate from arcstriders.

Idk, but I miss the old way of customizing a subclass

I’d appreciate sunsinger back, I’d main warlock forever, but I in no way want self res back.

Edited by Double07: 6/11/2021 1:17:38 AMRetconned because Bungie ruined them.

They exist, we just don’t use them. We just don’t, for whatever reason

If I remember correctly its that subclasses that we have currently are supposed to be older and unrefined versions of the subclasses we had in D1. Given that we were still recovering from Ghaul they weren't as focused as their counterparts in D1. At least the starting 3 subclasses (Sentinel, Arcstrider, Dawnblade.)

28 RepliesBungie can pretend there is lore reasons they changed but we all know felwinter was supposedly doing well of radiance in the dark age it's just retcons on retcons
-
2 RepliesThey do. We just changed them for the "new" ones.

15 RepliesWhile I cannot for the life of me imagine what idiotic solarlock would give up self-resurrection into an omnipowered superbeing in exchange for a sword that only hits things some of the time, we do know that how the Light is used changes all the time. In the old days, there were no Hunters, Warlocks, or Titans. People just kinda used the Light however was most effective for them at the time. And as time went on, it turned into the current way of things. So it's just that people keep finding more effective, or more efficient, uses of the Light. Ward of Dawn used to be the only way Defenders could use the Light. Now, Defenders are Sentinels who have learned to harness their Light in offensive ways too. Again, I have no IDEA how instant self-resurrection into an omnipowerful superbeing is less effective OR less efficient than a flaming sword that only hits its target some of the time...But apparently it is. =_=

Edited by Tâxx, Herald of the IRS: 6/9/2021 3:18:15 AMThey do still exist, they're just not in-game. In the Guardian Games event Warlock bond lore tab, one of the Warlocks was a Sunsinger.

I think the lore cards for sunshot and Phoenix protocol mention old subclasses, might wanna check those out.
